FRIDAY 3 APRIL

FRIDAY 3 APRIL

Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse and All-Weather Championships Finals Day. We are thrilled that you could join us here to celebrate the end of Season XIII, which has proven to be another fantastic competition over the winter
We have over £1m in prize money on offer, making this the richest all-weather meeting in Europe. In addition, the All-Weather Vase fixture worth £395,000 takes place at our sister racecourse Lingfield Park, while Chelmsford City also stages a valuable all-weather card. Good Friday continues to grow as a marquee day for British racing.
The thanks of everyone involved with the All-Weather Championships must go to the owners, trainers, jockeys and racing staff who have taken part, as well as those supporting today’s fixtures. Equally, we must thank our sponsors Midnite and BetMGM, who have been excellent supporters of the All-Weather Championships throughout the season.
We look forward to crowning this season’s champions this afternoon. Tony Carroll takes the All-Weather Champion Trainer title for a second successive year following another excellent campaign, while Godolphin is All-Weather Champion Owner for a 12th consecutive season.
In contrast to his thrilling battle last season with Hector Crouch, Billy Loughnane has retained his All-Weather Champion Jockey title with the minimum of fuss and could yet eclipse Luke Morris’ record of 102 winners in a season. The race to be crowned All-Weather Champion Apprentice looks set to go down to the wire, with Ryan Kavanagh and Jack Callan both in contention heading towards Good Friday.
Now in its fourth year, ARC’s £1m All-Weather Bonus Scheme produced another riveting competition. Yorkshire Glory clinched the overall £100,000 Horse of the Year prize with victory of his chief rival Aisling Oscar at Wolverhampton, his eighth of the season for trainer Ben Haslam.
We would like to wish you all the best of luck this afternoon and hope you have a fantastic day here at Gosforth Park.

Ryan Kavanagh is in pole position to take the All-Weather Champion Apprentice title, although Jack Callan could yet make a late push.
Callan spent part of the winter gaining further experience in Australia, which allowed Kavanagh to build up a lead through his association with trainer Ian Williams.
Kavanagh leads by four heading into the final days of the season, with both jockeys due to ride at Lingfield Park on Good Friday.

All-Weather (AWT)
An artificial racing surface. There are six All-Weather racetracks in Britain (Chelmsford, Kempton, Lingfield, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Newcastle) and one in Ireland (Dundalk), and they stage race meetings throughout the year There are three types of surface; Fibresand, Polytrack and Tapeta.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices, e.g. ‘16-1 bar’ means that any horse not mentioned in the list is priced at 16-1 or greater
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse.
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle. They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure the proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by the jockey to identify a horse. A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.
Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn” Stalls are used for Flat racing only
Filly Female horse four years old or younger
Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above
Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the toprated jumper in the 180s.
Sprint Races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.
Tongue-Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue-tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (‘t1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a tonguetie in a race for the first time).
Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small ‘v’ next to the horse’s weight (‘v1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).
Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing their racing kit and carrying their saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to their horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, their horse can still compete but must carry overweight.
When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. The title of All-Weather Champion Trainer will go to the trainer who has achieved the most wins over the course of this season, including today’s races at Newcastle and Lingfield Park. A cheque for £10,000 and a trophy will be presented to the winning trainer

TONY CARROLL retains the All-Weather Champion Trainer title following another prolific season that has seen the stable go from strength to strength.
Following his maiden title success, the Worcestershire handler enjoyed a landmark year in 2025 as he accrued more than £1 million in prize money for the first time and sent out a career-best 128 winners.
Carroll has carried that momentum through the winter season – topping the standings at Christmas and equalling last season’s tally of 57 winners in early March. Flagbearers for the yard include Towerlands and Royal Jet, who have won nine races between them this term.

Parading today at 12:30pm are Yorkshire Glory and Aisling Oscar. Aisling Oscar won the Horse of the Month for December and was a joint winner for January while Yorkshire Glory was a joint winner of the Horse of the Month for March & April.

Stateira was the most impressive of the six AWC Trials Day winners at the course in January, when she streaked to a four-length victory, to set herself up for a £15,000 bonus here.
The Irish challenge is made up of Carolina Jetstream, who looks the main danger judged on her two victories against the boys at Dundalk this season, and Newcastle trial third Indigo Dream.
Ziggy’s Queen is chasing a £15,000 bonus as well thanks to her AWC Trials Day success at Lingfield Park, on what was her first go over seven furlongs. Powdering, Brazilian Rose and Bridget’s View were close up in behind and all reoppose.
Fouette, a dual handicap winner earlier in the campaign, drops back down in class following two creditable efforts in Listed company at Lingfield Park and Deauville.

Billy Loughnane has turned the AllWeather Champion Jockey race into a procession, with the 20-year-old set to finish the season more than 30 clear of his closest challenger Luke Morris. He could yet challenge Morris’ all-time record of 102 wins, set in 2014/15.
Having denied Hector Crouch in a thrilling title battle last season, Loughnane sought to ride 200 winners for calendar year of 2025. In the end, he notched 222, the most of any jockey this century.
That tally turbo-charged Loughnane’s All-Weather Championships campaign and he established a 10-winner advantage in the lead up to Christmas. Notable victories include Hilitany in the Listed BetMGM Spring Cup and Ten Carat Harry at Newcastle’s AWC Trials Day.

Chancellor reverts to a mile following his neck second in the G3 Midnite Winter Derby, having comfortably defeated Tyrrhenian Sea over the distance on his penultimate start in the Listed BetMGM Tandridge Stakes.
While Chancellor bids to defy a rating of 109, there are several progressive contenders further down the handicap, including last-time-out winners The Lost King, Blue RC and First Principle
Last year’s winner Storm Star is 3lb higher in the weights this time around, although he has not been in the same form this term, including when weakening to third behind Witch Hunter on AWC Trials Day.
Apiarist, who like Witch Hunter is chasing a £15,000 bonus, and Popmaster were third and fifth 12 months ago and are both handicapped to be in the shakeup again.

Leading Irish AW sprinter Sir Les Patterson bids to overcome a rating of 107, with connections expecting improvement on the back of his eye-catching comeback win at Dundalk in February.
Pocklington prevailed in a dress rehearsal for this race at Southwell on New Year’s Day, with several of those in behind fancied to get closer, including Lakers, Coul Angel and Wiltshire.
Marshman was a creditable third under top weight last year and is now 5lb lower in the handicap, while Fivethousandtoone is 2lb lower than when winning the race in 2024 and has shaped well on his two latest outings.
Jack Channon has two live contenders in Ferrous and Sarab Star. El Bodon and Germanic are other names to note, with the duo having scored on two of their three starts so far this season.

Regal Ulixes and King’s Code are on for £15,000 bonuses following their respective AWC Trials Day victories at Lingfield Park and Newcastle, with the former open to improvement after only seven career starts.
Accomplished hurdler Gaucher is a first Finals Day runner for Willie Mullins following his successful switch back to the Flat – winning two of his three starts impressively at Dundalk over the winter.
Bragbor has yet to finish out of the frame in six appearances at Newcastle. Antrim also boasts a good strike-rate at the course, with two wins from three starts, and returns on the back of three runs on dirt out in Dubai.
Duke’s Command is best judged on his early season form, with luck going against him on his two latest starts, while Paradias is 3lb higher in the handicap than when finishing fourth in the race last year.

Ian Williams has a strong hand, with Cesarewitch hero Beylerbeyi returning to staying distances following three qualifying runs over shorter, while stablemate Enemy is chasing a £15,000 bonus thanks to his AWC Trials Day victory at Lingfield Park.
The 2024 runner-up Duke Of Oxford is better than ever at the age of six, having taken his third consecutive London Series Stayers Final at Kempton Park and posted an easy victory at Newcastle’s AWC Trials Day –setting up a £15,000 bonus opportunity.
Berkshire Sundance has won two of his last three starts, although ran no race at all behind Duke Of Oxford at the course in January. Dramatic Star meanwhile boasts winning form at the track and was just touched off in the Old Borough Cup in the autumn
Following a quiet season so far, Prydwen bids to recapture the form that saw him win this race easily in 2024 from a 3lb higher mark, while Irish raider Tribal Star aims to improve on his second behind Wonder Legend 12 months ago.
