Hereford Racecard - Wednesday 25th March

Page 1

Welcome to Hereford Racecourse for an afternoon of Spring jumps racing action, thank you to our race sponsors.

This week is #GroundsWeek2026 and celebrates all grounds teams up and down the country and across all sporting venues. We thank them for their work in all weathers and conditions to ensure the sporting surfaces are in the best condition possible, we simply couldn’t do it without them!

Last week we saw our 5th race of the day run in memory of Brian Davies, father of local trainer Sheila Lewis, and his lovely grey gelding Volcano. Whilst Sheila’s own runner in the race managed a gutsy 2nd the winner was just as fitting, as not only was The Brickey Ranger a grey, but was ridden by Jess Stewart who used to ride Volcano and marked a first course win for another local trainer Sarah-Jayne Davies who is a great supporter of Hereford, congratulations to all connections.

As we near the end of our season, we still have plenty to look forward to including our Easter Monday Family Raceday (Monday 6th April), with a variety of entertainment planned for the day, accompanied under 18’s go free to all fixtures so visit our website www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk to get your tickets now and to see all the entertainment planned. Then to our season finale on Thursday 16th April, the Richard Layton Charity Evening Racing, the perfect way to enjoy an evening of racing whilst supporting four fantastic charities.

We hope you have a great day with us today, we look forward to seeing you again before the end of the season.

Best wishes,

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

Can be given little or no chance

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

WEIGHTWATCHER: JACK DOYEN won off a handicap mark of 79, his rating is now down 5lb to 74.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: WARNER’S CROSS trained by C Hobson, Royston, 136 miles.

A ready winner of back-to-back handicap chase contests upon returning this winter (including over C&D) LELANT had excuses on account of the soft ground when pulled up at Fontwell in December. Freshened up and now returning to a sounder surface, he could be worth siding with to get back on track. Chief Black Robe needs to shrug off a lesser run over hurdles but is a player if doing so, whilst Fat Sam and Boys of Wexford also command a second look

Fergal O’Brien’s new recruit Madame de Labrunie has yet to show her (winning) French form here but could still emerge as the main danger now going into handicaps, while Arnie Moon is another handicap debutant who could have a say.
