Hereford Racecard - Thursday 16th April

Page 1

Welcome to Hereford Racecourse which sees the return of the Richard Layton Charity Evening for our season finale.

We are delighted to welcome the organisers of this raceday and all their supporters for what promises to be a fantastic afternoon and evening for all involved raising vital funds for their chosen charities All fundraising proceeds from today will be shared equally between We Are Farming Minds, The Injured Jockey’s Fund, Midlands Air Ambulance and Herefordshire Mind.

We thank today’s race sponsors including Sigeric Ltd, Acre Accountancy, Keltruck, Burcombe Construction Ltd, The Howell & Layton Families and Wye Valley Metals, who through their race sponsorship have supported the charities today. They will also be welcoming guests into hospitality together with other local businesses, plus friends and family of the organisers, all of whom have been so generous in their support thus far

Tragically, Richard Layton, who ran Dewdales Hope Farm in Bodenham, took his own life in 2023 following a lengthy mental health battle His family are determined to raise awareness and support those in the local Herefordshire farming community who may similarly be suffering from anxiety, loneliness and depression. Combining the organisers farming and racing backgrounds, their aim is to‘Make Mental Health the Front Runner’and we do hope you will show them your support today, by just being here means so much to them.

We thank everyone for their support this season, and before we know it the doors will be opening back up for the start of the 26/27 season;

- Tuesday 13th October – Season Opener

- Monday 26th October – Halloween Family Raceday

- Thursday 12th November – Winter Afternoon Racing

- Wednesday 25th November – Winter Afternoon Racing - Tuesday 8th December – Festive Racing

TODAY marks the second Richard Layton Charity Raceday, an idea born from personal loss and stark statistics highlighting a mental health crisis within the agricultural community.

No fewer than SEVEN Herefordshire farmers took their own lives in 2023. While we await the latest figures, 47 deaths were recorded across the agricultural sector in England and Wales in 2024 – a 7% rise on 2022.

Farming continues to face intense pressures, including isolation, financial strain and long hours, all contributing to a higher suicide risk than many other professions.

This crisis is all too close to home. Tragically, Richard Layton (inset), who ran Dewdales Hope Farm in Bodenham near Leominster, was among those affected.

He was just 53 when he took his own life in March 2023, following a long battle with mental health. His wife Marie-Louise, son George and daughter Lily are committed to raising awareness and supporting others in the Herefordshire farming community facing anxiety, loneliness and depression.

Marie-Louise’s cousins, Sue and

Andrew Howell – founders of the Wye Valley Group – also lost their elder brother Robert at just 27. For both families and their friends, this cause is deeply personal. They are united in their determination to make a difference and help save lives.

With the NHS under strain, charities play a vital role in providing essential support.

Following the success of the inaugural Raceday in November 2024, which raised over £50,000 for three charities, a fourth beneficiary, Herefordshire Mind, joins We Are Farming Minds, Midlands Air Ambulance and the Injured Jockeys Fund, with proceeds shared equally

In partnership with Press Box Publishing founder Simon Milham, the families have again come together under ‘Charity Racedays’ to host a memorable and meaningful occasion.

The organisers are sincerely grateful to all the individuals and businesses whose generosity and support have made this event possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Sincerely,

Marie-Louise Layton, George Layton, Lily Layton, Sue Howell, Andrew Howell & Simon Milham

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

Can be given little or no chance

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site.

Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today.
