Proud Champions of the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme All of our member racecourses participate in the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme, a nationwide initiative for those with disabilities that may not be visible. A sunflower lanyard discretely signals to staff that the person wearing the lanyard may need additional support or a little more time when attending racedays. Guests are welcome to bring their own lanyards or to register in advance by contacting the racecourse they’ll be attending. Sunflower lanyards can also be collected at certain entrance points. If you would like more information, please ask a member of staff.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

HADDEX DES OBEAUX displayed a willing attitude when landing a big-field contest at Auteuil in April, pulling a long way clear with another rival, and he has been found a suitable race on reappearance. Our Surprise also tasted success during the spring and is the obvious threat having undergone a wind op in the interim.

PASVOLSKY was well held at Sandown when last seen, but some of his earlier novice form reads quite nicely so he’s worth another chance with this slightly longer trip expected to suit. Thibault was a good advertisement for his small yard last term and looks a threat having not been disgraced in much deeper handicaps than this on his last 3 outings. COMMITMENT TO HORSE WELFARE
A British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer is also in attendance working closely with the racecourse veterinary team. This is to ensure that any injury to a horse is recorded, so that it can be monitored when it returns to racing. It is now a standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calmer environment. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website:

“For every horse that appears on a racecourse, there is a large group of individuals that have made it happen. They are not in the limelight, but they are totally dedicated to their work. When these people face difficulties in their lives, they need somewhere to turn, and Racing Welfare is there for each and every one of them.” - HRH The Princess Royal President of Racing Welfare
Your £5 a month will allow a retired beneficiary to meet up with old friends and reminisce about their time in the racing industry. Your £60 over the course of the year will allow a retired couple to attend one of our special day trips to attend a raceday, the theatre or to the seaside.
