Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

GLIMPSE OF GALA has been given plenty of time to recover following a heavy fall on her Worcester hurdling debut in May and remains with potential given her bumper exploits, so she’s more appealing than the more exposed Stamina Chope, who sets out for another new yard back up in trip.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.

COMMITMENT TO HORSE WELFARE We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest level of care. At every meeting there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. A British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer is also in attendance working closely with the racecourse veterinary team. This is to ensure that any injury to a horse is recorded, so that it can be monitored when it returns to racing. It is now a standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calmer environment. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website:

A case can be made for a few of these but recent Uttoxeter scorer UNO MAS gets the nod given he still looks well weighted despite a 6lb rise for that success. Watching Brief arrives at the top of his game and rates a big threat back up in trip, while Czech Her Out is also in the mix on the back of her Worcester success. 1-2-3: 1.UNO MAS 2.WATCHING BRIEF (IRE) 3.CZECH HER OUT (IRE) KEY colours

THE TWISLER is fit from a recent spin on the Flat and is still on a fair mark on the pick of his hurdle form, so he could be the answer with his yard going well. Naizagai has been cut a bit of slack by the handicapper on this return to action so he£ s worth considering, as is Dutch Admiral, whose handicap debut effort at Stratford is easily excused.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: EBONY GALE trained by P Hobbs, Minehead, 143 miles. RACE SUMMARY

The Worcester handicap EBONY GALE landed when last seen in June wasn’t a particularly strong race for the grade, but he did the job well enough to suggest that this 5lb higher mark should be within reach. Mister Tickle needs to pull out more in order to complete the hat-trick under a penalty, but his bold jumping will stand him in good stead and he looks a bigger threat than the veteran Mr Mafia.
