Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

ACCORDING TO MARK left the impression he wasn’t at his best when going down to an improving, well-bred filly at Pontefract last month, but it was still a fairly useful effort nonetheless and he’s worth another chance to open his account up in trip on first start since being gelded. Hatteen is an obvious threat on form and has hopes of staying the longer trip given he’s by Lope de Vega and out of a Galileo mare. Count Bezukhov’s Curragh win is working out well and he rates a useful prospect.

TIMEFORMVIEWMade a good return to action when third at Brighton on handicap debut last month before scoring against his elders at Ffos Las (6f, good to firm, 11/1) 10 days ago under a more positive ride. Shoulders a 6lb penalty and can give another good account now he’s up and running. TFRHHHHH BHA54 (+4)

TIMEFORMVIEWBuilt on a couple of good efforts to finally open his account by 4 1/4 lengths in a 6-runner handicap at Catterick (5f, good to soft, 4/5) last month having been well backed. May have more to offer despite a 9lb rise for that success. RACE SUMMARY Two interesting three-year-olds taking on two progressive four-year-olds Ashj’aa and Al Sharid. Of those Amir Athbah is probably the most promising and must be respected. AL SHARID though despite giving weight away is the pick to continue his progression as he gears up for a potential run in the UK Arabian Derby here in a few months’ time.

Has won his last two starts in handicap company, the latest coming here over ten furlongs. He was always holding a much higher rated rival despite keeping a bit back for himself. Must give weight all round but this looks less competitive than his last win and he’s the one to beat. (R3 W2 P1) (OR 95)

The penny dropped late on, and he finished to good effect on his debut over a furlong shorter in April. The extra distance will suit here, and he looks like the stable first string. The main danger to Al Sharid getting a good chunk of weight from that rival. (R1 W0 P1) (NOR)
