Peckforton Hills is the bottom weight in this race He was well backed on handicap debut last time out at Sedgefield (from 9/2 into 5/2) and will get a tongue-tie and pieces applied for the first time. He looks like one of the more interesting runners off a low mark of 89 for Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero. Diamond Koda also looks of interest now stepping back down in trip and drops 1lb in the weights. The less stamina testing distance could see him improve from a somewhat disappointing effort here over 3 miles last time out. Ryebridge ran well in a Novice Hurdle at Carlisle in December The form of that race has worked out well and he could be off a nice mark on handicap debut.
2:20
Lylian makes some appeal here stepping down in grade to Class 4 company. The 5-year-old is still looking for his first win since moving to the Gary & Josh Moore yard last year from France but may have found himself in a winnable race Sign Again has his chances also but it’s a slight worry that the form of his last race on Boxing Day at Sedgefield has not worked out too well since. Noahsgreatrainbow may have gone too fast early on in his last run where he was pulled up, but this smaller field might suit him better and he could be the pace angle to the race
2:50
Tormund Giantsbane was an eye-catching winner in a Novice’s Hurdle at Carlisle in November He was no match for No Drama This End in the Grade 2 Winter Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown last time out. He steps up in trip for this race so the distance has to be a question mark plus he may want a fast pace to set the race up for him but he has shown plenty of ability and should be warm in the betting. Quay Item was an easy winner of a maiden at Plumpton. He placed in two Point-to-Points so is likely to stay the extra distance. There is a question of the quality of the maiden race but he looks an interesting contender here coming from a top yard
3:22
Light Fandando’s best runs have come over this shorter trip and he did win a Class 4 Handicap Hurdle here at Doncaster in December on good ground. As Fast As Wind ran a nice second place last month at Musselburgh. She could be a danger at the bottom of the weights. The likely pace in the race could come from both Minella Jury and Parramount with the unexposed Minella Jury making most appeal coming here after a first-time wind operation.
3:57
Mr Griffiths (due to go up 12lb) won a “Hands And Heels” Handicap Hurdle last Friday by 26 lengths and looks the one to beat if he can run to recent form. Scairp Dubh is 5lb well in at the weights after winning the Carlisle Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle and looks the main danger to Mr Griffiths. Be The Difference has had a busy campaign this season but managed to rack up a few handicap wins. He was pulled up last time out and even though he steps back in class, others make more appeal. The Ben Pauling-trained Les’s Destiny Star makes his handicap hurdle debut here. He showed promise in two bumper starts including when winning at Doncaster over 2 years ago He may improve for the application of a tongue-tie and is one to watch.
4:30
It’s a quick turnaround for Count Adhemar who recently finished a narrow second in a Novices’ Handicap Chase at Ludow. He is now 3lb well in at the weights and another bold effort is expected today stepping back up in trip Bravethewaves will need to improve but showed he does have plenty of ability when he won a handicap chase at Southwell in November on good to soft ground. Line of Descent may have needed the run last time out when returning to racing after a long absence and it would be no surprise if he returned to better form than what we saw at Southwell.
5:05
Sainte Doctor should have no problems stepping back up in trip and she looks like she is in top form. This will be her second run back off a lay off and she looks to have every chance. Ladronne was a nice winner of a Veterans’ Chase last time out and looks to be coming here with solid claims. Northern Poet is a course and distance winner. He had a couple of modest performances last season but can’t be ruled out if returning to better form after the layoff.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The most interesting of these by some way is LAKE TIBERIAS, who has looked a work in progress in his qualifying runs and promises to show himself in a better light now venturing down the handicap route. Peckforton Hills may not be entirely straightforward but he is respected nonetheless on the back of a creditable handicap debut third at Sedgefield Bridge and Tigga Time are other plausible candidates.

Scairp Dubh is also unpenalised for his recent Carlisle success (due to go up 5lb for that) and he is clear second choice ahead of handicap debutant Les’s Destiny Star
