Good Afternoon and welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for the highlight of the four-day Betfred St Leger Festival – the 248th Betfred St Leger Day! We are delighted you’ve joined us here today and we would like to thank our festival sponsors Betfred and our race sponsors PJ Towey Construction, EBF, Hippo Pro and Betfred for their generous support of today’s fixture.
There are 7 races on the card and our raceday presenter Bobby Beevers, resident tipster Roger Hart and a Betfred representative will be in the Parade Ring at around 12:45 to run through the racecard with you and hopefully pick you out some winners!
The 2022 St Leger Day was a very special and poignant time in racing history. We were all deeply saddened by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and racing was abandoned across the UK for two days while the country went into mourning. St Leger Day was rescheduled for Sunday 11th September, and we paid tribute to our much-loved late Queen, and racing’s biggest ambassador.
The horses declared to run in the Worlds’ oldest Classic, today’s feature race the Betfred St Leger Stakes at 3:35pm have a great pedigree with ante post favorite Gregory, who lost his unbeaten record when placing only third to Continuous in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last month, but Gosden remains positive about the chances of the Wathan Racing-owned colt in the Betfred St Leger Stakes
This year His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla, have declared Desert Hero, a horse bred by the late Queen. The last Classic won by a reigning monarch was in 1977 when Dunfermline was first past the post, in the St Leger Stakes for Queen Elizabeth II.
Before racing today, we hope you enjoy the live DJ on the Champagne Lawn in the County Enclosure. Then straight after the last race, Decade Explosion will have you up dancing as they play through a repertoire of unforgettable hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s! Grandstand and Family Enclosure guests are welcome to upgrade your tickets if you’d like to stay and enjoy the entertainment.
Our friends from British Champions Series are in the Exhibition Hall today with their Hall of Fame, and outside the Weighing Room you’ll find a giant 10ft tall ‘Farewell Frankie’ leaving card commissioned by Betfred. Frankie Dettori’s last ride at Doncaster is due to be at this year’s Betfred St Leger Festival so make sure you stop by to sign his card in advance of his retirement
Tickets are still available for our brand-new St Leger Community Funday tomorrow. There’ll be lots of free entertainment and activities for the whole family to enjoy including a kid’s disco, facepainting, coloring station, fire engine, air ambulance simulator, stilt walkers, meet and greets with Doncaster Knights players and a roving museum. Plus, don’t miss the amazing acts we have on the ‘Discovering’ Stage in the Exhibition Hall. These local performers entered our talent competition to win a performance slot to entertain you throughout the day. Stop by and show your support.
As always, our team here at Doncaster are committed to doing our very best to ensure you enjoy the Betfred St Leger Festival 2023. We have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks getting the site ready and prepared for you and we value any feedback you may have
Enjoy da Rach

HAVE A QUESTION? REQUIRE SOME ASSISTANCE? OUR RACEDAY TEAM ARE HERE TO HELP!
Allowance The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
Amateur (Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. to indicate their amateur license-holder status.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices. e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by jockey to identify a horse A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.
Colt Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old .
Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Connections The owner and trainer of a racehorse
Distance The length of a race
Dam Mother of a horse
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only.
Filly Female horse four-years-old or younger.
Foal Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year
Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Gelding Castrated horse
Going Description of the course conditions under foot.
Hand Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder
Judge Official responsible for declaring the finishing order and distances between horses.
Juvenile Two-year old horse
Maiden Horse which has not yet won a race.
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above
Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Penalty Weight added to the handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were published.
Photo Finish Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highestrated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.
Schooled Trained to jump
Sire Father of a horse
Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.
Stewards Enquiry Enquiry by a panel of men and women responsible for seeing rules are adhered to into a race’s running.
Tongue Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time).
Under Starter’s Orders Occurs when the race is about to start Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).
Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.
Yearling Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
Bay (B) – from light brown through to dark brown with black mane/tail
Chestnut (CH) – reddish with a mane/tail to match Roan (Ro) – white hairs mixed with another colour
Brown (Br) – darker than a bay with a black mane/tail
Black (Bl) – Black and rare
White (Wh) – Rare with pink skin.
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

PAUL BARKER CLERK OF THE COURSE
Clerk of the Course at Doncaster Racecourse and Regional Clerk of the Course in the North covering Newcastle, Sedgefield and Doncaster.
Being a Clerk of the Course since 2016, I have been responsible for Sedgefield, Worcester, Southwell and Doncaster, also covering many fixtures at six other ARC racecourses.
The 2022 St Leger. We raced as normal on the Wednesday for Leger Legends and Ladies Day on Thursday. After racing on Thursday it was announced that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had sadly passed away. Months of planning had gone into the fourday St Leger and in 48 hours, with no races planned for Sunday, the team at Doncaster organised a 9-race card for Sunday. We worked even longer hours that we usually do during the festival to ensure the site looked immaculate for our guests. I was incredibly proud to stand in the Parade Ring during the National Anthem and minute’s silence. All racegoers, Doncaster Racecourse staff, jockeys, owners, trainers and racing officials bowed their heads to pay their respects and the silence around the course was something I’ll never forget
In a nutshell, very early mornings, very late nights, lots of miles walked and constantly monitoring the weather!
Potential runners are entered six days prior to each days racing, therefore I walk the track at least once (over 2.5miles) to ensure the ground conditions are monitored and the going report is updated.
Horses are declared 48 hour prior to each raceday and during the morning of ‘declarations’ my day will st at 6am when I walk the cour aga Manager, Sam Parker, and the going report is produced ahead of horses being declared before 10am. During a raceday my day begins at 5.30am, where I walk the course with Sam and produce a going report for the ground conditions, paperwork is to be completed, I catch-up with the raceday officials and make sure everythings running smoothly before an exciting day of racing begins.
WHAT MAKES THE BETFRED ST LEGER FESTIVAL SPECIAL TO YOU?
My favourite part of the Betfred St Leger Festival is seeing which horses are entered over the four days, especially the group races. As the St Leger Festival is well into the season, I enjoy following horses throughout the summer and hope to see them achieve further success at Doncaster.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE?
I have a fantastic team of groundstaff working extremely hard behind the scenes to ensure the racecourse looks outstanding. From watering the course into the night and mowing the track and lawns to moving running rail and ensuring the stable yard is ready to welcome each days’ runners, they are a credit to the racecourse.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE RACECOURSE?
One of my favourite parts on the track is just over Rose Hill (the furthest part from the Grandstand) as this feels like you’re in the middle of the countryside and not in the middle of Doncaster.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE DAY OF THE BETFRED ST LEGER FESTIVAL AND WHY?
Friday, as my favourite race is the Doncaster Cup Seeing many horses return each year to compete in not only the longest race (2m2f), but also Doncaster’s oldest race, which was first run in 1766. Previous winners that stick in my memory include Stradivarius, Times Up and Double Trigger.
Returns based on a £1 bet Nifty 50 6 ball draw only Bets must be placed on either of Fred's 5 Million slips to qualify for the £5 million payout (pick & match 6). Last year’s victor CALL ME GINGER looks to have arrived in peak form again and can complete a quick hat-trick after stylish recent successes at Chester and Ascot. The Big Board could find this intermediate trip to his liking and is feared most, although Significantly is another who could shine at this distance and merits serious consideration. Vintage Clarets, Kimngrace and Aberama Gold complete the shortlist in a fiercely competitve renewal of the Portland.

The Park Stakes is a Group 2 race run over 7-furlongs and is one of the highlights of the Betfred St Leger Festival each year. First run in 1978, the Park Stakes was originally a ‘Listed’ race before it was given Group 3 status in 1986 when the race distance was changed to 1-mile. The race reverted back to a 7-furlong contest in 2003, before it was upgraded again to Group 2 status in 2004. It is open to horses aged three-year-old and upwards.
This is another contest Frankie Dettori has excelled in over the years and as such he is currently the leading jockey in the history of the race with five wins to his name having ridden the likes of Iffraaj and Kinross to victory.
The legendary Sir Michael Stoute is the leading trainer in the history of the Park Stakes, winning it four times during his illustrious career. His most recent victory was with the Shadwell Estate-owned Mustashry in 2018.
The quickest recorded winner of the
race is Pastoral Pursuits who, ridden ce ridden by Steve Drowne, completed the St e 7-furlongs in a time of 1:21:66 in 2004. in a
This is another race where it pays to side with the more fancied players, with 18 of the last 20 winners coming from the first five in the betting.
The race is usually won by older horses, with only three three-year-old’s winning in the last 15 years. Only three horses have won multiple renewals of this race in its 45-year history. Those are: Bishop of Cashel (1995/1996), Iffraaj (2005/06) and Arabian Gleam (2007/08).

T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: SEAN LEVEY
Alexandropoulis has only raced three times He won on debut at Galway just over a year ago, and was thought by many to be a Classic contender for this year After being beaten in a Derby trial on his seasonal reappearance in April he finished just fifth of six on his return from a short break in the Vinnie Roe Stakes (Listed) at the end of last month His sire Camelot famously finished second in the 2012 St Leger when bidding to win the Triple Crown. He has a major task on his hands if he is to be involved at the finish today.
T: JOHN & THADY GOSDEN
J: FRANKIE DETTORI
Arrest was sent off favourite for The Derby earlier this season, but unfortunately he failed to handle the track and finished well-beaten. After another below-par effort on fast ground at Royal Ascot he bounced right back to form with a ruthless victory from the front in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes last time when he could have been called the winner a long way from home. It is particularly notable that Frankie Dettori has chosen to ride him over stablemate Gregory whom many thought Dettori would stick with.
T: SIMON & ED CRISFORD
J: JAMES DOYLE
Chesspiece is one of the most consistent horses in this field, having not finished out of the front three in any of his six career starts. He was beaten only a neck by Desert Hero when runner-up in the Gordon Stakes (G3) at the Qatar Goodwood Festival a month ago. That was arguably a career best, but before that he achieved ‘Listed’ glory when making the long journey to Hamilton worthwhile to win the Glasgow Stakes (Listed). His jockey James Doyle is riding supremely well at present and has won two Group 1’s in the last three weeks.
T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: RYAN MOORE
Continuous looks to be the main pick of the four Aidan O’Brien-trained runners in this field. He backed up a fine effort in defeat at Royal Ascot to win the Great Voltigeur Stakes (G2) at York last time out, when given an incredibly patient ride by Ryan Moore. He is versatile when it comes to ground conditions and trainer Aidan O’Brien has won this race an impressive six times through the years. This is the first time the son of Heart’s Cry will have run over 1m6f so there may be improvement to come
T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: DANIEL TUDHOPE
The outsider of the Ballydoyle quintet, Denmark, has been placed in handicap company in this country on each of his last two starts There is quite a big step up from handicap to Gr 1 company though and on his sole start at Group level, he finished fifth of six in the Ballysax Stakes (G3) behind stablemate Alexandropoulis. He will likely be one of the frontrunners to ensure a strong pace is set for his other stablemate Continuous.
T: WILLIAM HAGGAS
J: TOM MARQUAND
Desert Hero would arguably be the most popular winner of the Betfred St Leger (G1). Owned by The King and Queen, he is a fascinating runner as he steps up to 1m6f for the first time. He posted a career-best last time out when he stayed on strongly to win the Gordon Stakes (G3), which followed a memorable victory beforehand at Royal Ascot. Yorkshire-born trainer William Haggas has still not recorded a St Leger win on his gliterring CV, though jockey Tom Marquand won the race in 2020 aboard Galileo Chrome. Marquand has been aboard Desert Hero on each of his three starts in 2023.
T: JOHN & THADY GOSDEN
J: KIERAN SHOEMARK
Gregory looked a horse going places when he showed a tremendous attitude to fend off all challengers to win the Queen’s Vase (G2) at Royal Ascot. However, he lost his unbeaten record when only third in the Great Voltigeur Stakes(G2) at York to Continuous when he went too fast in the early stages of the race A more strongly-run contest should suit this son of Golden Horn, but the fact that Frankie Dettori has opted to partner Arrest over him is a slight concern. One thing Gregory doesn’t have to prove is his stamina, with his Royal Ascot win coming over the St Leger trip of 1m6f
T: JOHN & THADY GOSDEN
J: OISIN MURPHY
Qatar Racing won the St Leger in dramatic circumstances with Simple Verse in 2015, and eight years later are looking to do the same again after Middle Earth was supplemented by connections to be the third of three runners for the John and Thady Gosden stable. He took his form to a whole new level last time when tearing the field apart in the Melrose Handicap, and despite the fact this is a huge step up in class, he could be open to any amount of improvement on just his fifth career start
T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: JIM CROWLEY
Tower Of London has become somewhat a forgotten horse. He looked a stayer to follow earlier in the year and was sent off at oddson to win the Bahrain Trophy (G3) at Newmarket, but failed to oblige after suffering trouble in-running in a messy small-field event. He has not been seen since that race but is right up there with the main players on ratings and would not be running unless he was 100%. He should not be ruled out despite looking the apparent second-string for Aidan O’Brien.
The St Leger Stakes is the highlight of the year at Doncaster Racecourse. It is a Group 1 race open to three-year-old colts and fillies run over 1-mile and 6-furlongs. Established in 1766, it is the oldest and final Classic of Britain’s five Classic races.
The Classics consist of the 2000 Guineas, 1000 Guineas, Betfred Oaks, Betfred Derby and the St Leger.
In 2019, the Juddmonte-owned Logician broke the record for the fastest winning time in the St Leger Stakes as he completed the race in a time of 3:00:27s. recorded in th when Never 12-lengths.

Race Summary:
Just the 9 runners for the oldest Classic but it has a very open feel to it. CONTINUOUS took his form to a whole new level in a well-run race when a decisive winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York and that marks him out as the one to beat with this trip likely to unlock even more. Gregory failed to land the odds in that race but he carried a penalty that day and this contest will play to his strengths (though Dettori now rides Arrest). At longer odds, Tower of London cannot be ruled out

When Sheffield Assay Office was first set up in 1773, the Assay Master did all the work himself, with the help of three part-time staff. Today the office employs 70 people. Hardly surprising, when you realise that last year we tested and marked 3 million articles. The Office is proud to have hallmarked the St Leger Stakes Trophy at Sheffield Assay Office for last 15 years.
It is impossible to tell the precious metal content of an item just by looking at it. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are too soft to use alone for making jewellery, cutlery and other goods. They need to be alloyed with other, base (and cheaper) metals for manufacturing. To protect the consumer, Sheffield Assay Office tests (assays) articles to make sure that too much base metal hasn't been used. At the same time, ensuring the manufacturer's peace of mind by providing an assessment of quality and content.
The 1772 Act of Parliament appointed 30 local men as 'Guardians of the Standard of Wrought Plate in the Town of Sheffield' to supervise the work of the office and assay and hallmark silver. The first customer registered with the Sheffield Assay Office on the 11th September and the first articles were hallmarked on the 20th of the same month. The number of Guardians who were also silversmiths was restricted to just ten to ensure that the Office offered an independent and impartial service - and was run for the benefit of the consumer rather than the manufacturer After all, the hallmark is the oldest form of consumer protection that exists.
Two and a half centuries ago the Sheffield Assay Office put a marker down for independence and integrity In those early days, most of the assay business came from within a 20 mile radius and precious items were literally presented 'over the counter' to be assayed. Today, The Sheffield Assay Office attracts customers from all over the world and the business has evolved to meet the demands of society and industry. Jewellery and items of precious metal are still assayed in their millions each year and bear the distinctive Sheffield 'Town' mark, but 'SAO' now has a world-wide reputation in other arenas too, particularly in cutting-edge analytical services.
The Sheffield Assay Office appreciates there is still a need for traditional hallmarking skills; marking by hand is often the best way to hallmark certain items. Skill and care are part of the heritage of the Officeand will play a key role in the future too.
The advent of laser marking, however, has meant that delicate or hollow articles can be hallmarked without any possibility of damage and The Sheffield Assay Office has invested significantly in laser marking technology for both quality and quantity of output.
In other areas of the organisation, investment and innovation also provides the impetus. The laboratories are superbly equipped with leadingedge technology and staffed by highly qualified personnel who can analyse and determine materials in accordance to the EC Directive.
Investment in XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) machines has ensured that Sheffield Assay Office Analytical Services can deliver very accurate analysis of metal composition and material conformity Today clients include national high-street retailers and international manufacturers.
Sheffield Assay Office was one of the first laboratories to be given UKAS accreditation and is proud to have retained that accreditation continuously for 40 years, each year satisfying the stringent demands of the standard. For clients, many of whom must demonstrate Due Diligence, this commitment to quality and continuous improvement is seen in a concise service, confidentiality and comprehensive reporting. In two and a half centuries of history, The Sheffield Assay Office has proudly maintained a position of independence and integrity. Today, a reputation for innovation too provides a compelling reason for business and industry across the spectrum to use the services in delivering consumer protection.
From a past rooted in the history to a present and a future which embraces innovation, The Sheffield Assay Office has built a reputation for integrity in every respect. The traditional business of hallmarking continues to provide customers both nationally and worldwide with an assurance of quality and purity; the instantly recognisable Sheffield mark of the rose is carefully applied to items of precious metal which can range from the most delicate chain to a stunning one-off table centrepiece created by a contemporary designer Whatever the item, whoever the customer, the independence and stringent standards of The Sheffield Assay Office ensure accuracy and inspire confidence.
The guiding principles of protection and guarantee have also enabled The Sheffield Assay Office to move successfully into other areas of analysis where, once again, an independent assessment is required. The Analytical Services division not only provides metals analysis and certification but also operates in areas as diverse as smelting and assay of bullion, mineral analysis and land contamination investigations, mercury screening and medical research, plating thickness measurement and nickel testing. Clients for these services are drawn from a diverse range of business and industry but they share a common need - for absolute integrity of service and evaluation.
In addition to the titles, prestige, and prize money, the 2023 classic winning owners will also receive a photography commission of their winning horse from renowned portrait photographer Tom Shaw. Shaw, who has photographed some of the world’s biggest sports stars, photographs horses in the style of legendary equine artist George Stubbs. The idea was born during a late summer drive in the Cotswolds where the evening sun gently raked across the idyllic countryside, mirroring the backdrops that Stubbs often used in his paintings.
You can read more about Tom Shaw and his work here at www.tomshawphotography.com/stubbs.
