I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all here today for the opening of the 2022 Irish flat racing season. We are delighted to be jointly opening the season with our sister track at Naas which hosts an excellent card tomorrow. After two years of restrictions, we are very much looking forward to opening the gates and welcoming racegoers back to the Curragh. We have made some changes to our offering which we hope you will enjoy and are always interested in customer feedback. In 2022, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings an increase of two over last year - and we have an exciting programme of quality flat racing on offer throughout the year. One of our objectives is 100% race sponsorship for the year and we are very grateful to today’s sponsors - Irish EBF, Castlefield Stud, DMG Media, Cavalor Equine Nutrition, Finlay Volvo, Lodge Park Stud, Paddy Power, Barberstown Castle Hotel and TRI Equestrian for the support which they have given us. I would also like to thank the owners with runners here at the Curragh today for your support - we hope your experience is a good one. The Curragh is a special racecourse, but also an important training centre, with approximately 1000 horses in training here on our gallops every morning. I am pleased to say that we will honor one of our own today in making a small presentation to Curragh trainer Padraig Roche who trained his first Cheltenham Festival winner last week. Congratulations Padraig. As we start our 2022 season, it is appropriate to look back on the last two years, acknowledge the exceptional work done by all frontline workers in combatting this pandemic and to remember those that have lost loved ones in this time. The Ukranian flag will also be flying here at the Curragh today in recognition of the suffering being endured by its people. The Curragh is working with Newbridge Lions Club to help people displaced or bereaved by the war. A sombre note which puts in perspective how lucky we are to be able to enjoy our day’s racing. The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 9

GUIDE TO RACING

Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes fluent. Here are some of the most common racing terms you are likely to hear when you are racing. Brush up on them and you will sound like a seasoned professional in no time! ALLOWANCE

DISTANCE

The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience.

The length of a race.

ANTE-POST

Describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls.

Betting (usually for the most important races) days or even months before the race is due to take place.

APPRENTICE Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while they are learning.

BACKWARD Young horse which needs time to mature.

CLERK OF THE COURSE Official in charge of running the racing programme, at the Curragh it is Brendan Sheridan.

CLERK OF THE SCALES Key in the delivery of a successful racing operation. Their job is to check that the horses in each race carry the correct weights.

COLOURS The racing silks worn by the jockeys.

COLT Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old.

CONNECTIONS The owner and trainer of a racehorse.

CURRAGH COMMENT The betting market could prove a good guide in this race full of newcomers, but Jim Bolger saddled the first and third 12 months ago and looks to have another cracking chance with FINSCEAL GO DEO this time around. Out of three-time Group 1 scorer Finsceal Beo and by the excellent Kingman, she is certainly bred to have plenty of ability and, with a €500,000 price tag to live up to, it will be disappointing if she doesn’t go close. Midnight Toker, Forceful Speed and Ocean Quest are others to watch out for.

KEY CURRAGH CONTESTS

Significant races to follow in 2022

MOYGLARE STUD STAKES One of the premier races for two-year-old fillies, last year’s race saw a clash of two great fillies. Jessica Harrington’s Discoveries and Joseph O’Brien’s Agartha clashed over the seven furlong trip, with the former coming out on top by three quarters of a length. The pair pulled a further two-lengths clear of the field and they were definitely the horses to take out of the race. Both horses hold entries in the Irish and English 1000 Guineas and look set to match again this season. ALAN SMURFIT MEMORIAL BERESFORD STAKES This mile contest for two-year-olds is always one to watch with keen interest. Given Aidan O’Brien’s incredible record in this race, it was no suprise to see him come out on top again. Luxembourg was given a patient ride by Seamie Heffernan, held up in last, but when pushing the accelerator button, he soon proved too strong for this field. The son of Camelot drew readily clear by nearly five lengths and justified the strong market support. This looks to be Aidan O’Brien’s Derby horse for the season and given he appreciates the step up in trip like his Sire, he looks a solid contender .

COOLMORE SOTTSASS IRISH EBF MOORESBRIDGE STAKES An early season Group 2, this race gives the perfect stepping stone for those middle-distance horses who are looking to take the step up in class and compete at a higher level later in the year. Broome took the race last year for Aidan O’Brien from the smart-gelding Helvic Dream, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some of the big guns make their seasonal debuts in this race, as it falls well in the racing calendar. The race was upgraded to Group 2 status not too long ago, and that faith has been rewarded by the likes of Minding, Cliffs Of Moher and Magical winning the race since it’s promotion to Group 2 level.

GAIN RAILWAY STAKES Mid-June sees the Railway Stakes, a six furlong Group 2 for some of the more precocious two-year-olds in training. 2019 winner Siskin stands out as one of the stars to come from the race, but last year’s winner was one from overseas as Go Bears Go scored for David Loughnane. The classy juvenile then took a further step in the right direction when landing the Group 2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes here in emphatic style, kicking five-lengths clear of the useful-sort Manu Et Corde. Usual suspect Ryan Moore took over in the saddle when landing the Futurity Trophy Stakes at 4/6F, always doing enough to land the short-price. He looks set to be Aidan O’Brien’s Derby horse for the season and currently heads the betting following an almighty first season.

CURRAGH COMMENT Perfect Thunder looked as if she would win when going clear on her debut before hanging sharply left and eventually coming home in fifth. She was a solid second last time out at Leopardstown but may be forced to play second fiddle to TOY today. A beautifully bred filly who is closely related to numerous Classic winners, she was second over C&D on her only outing last season and may well have improved sufficiently over the winter to take this in her stride. Ha Ha Ha looks the part on paper and is another to consider on her racecourse bow.

Picked up for 575,000 GNS, a lot was expected from this son of Australia and to date, he is yet to dissappoint. Right from the get-go, you could tell that Aidan O’Brien had yet another promising type to add to his all-powerful stable. A ﬁve and a half length winner on debut in a hot maiden at the Curragh, he was always destined for greatness. He was one of the most talked about juveniles in training last season and seemed to progress with each run, ﬁnding himself a strong favourite for the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes. Albeit not winning due to running into the top-rated juvenile, Native Trail, he still had an excellent season. Jim Bolger’s colt got within a neck of success on his debut over this track and trip, before running respectably in two Group 3 contests at Leopardstown after that. A return to Pattern company looks likely for the son of Teofilo, with this race potentially offering him a golden chance for a confidence-boosting first success.

She made her debut at Naas, when powering home by one and a half lengths and has since not looked back,especially here in Ireland. The bright, speedy-type made it a perfect 4-4, landing prizes at both 5f and 6f, including a very competitive 22-runner field at Naas. However, the run that really catches the eye was the four length success in the Group 3 Heider Family Stables Round Tower Stakes Tower Stakes here at the Curragh, where she quickly put a good field to the sword. Although dissappointing first-time overseas in the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, this filly still looks a bright prospect coming into this season, and should be watched closely first-time-out.

THE PADDY POWER IRISH LINCOLNSHIRE 2021 When racing returned to the Curragh following the restart of racing, it did so without the pictured crowds, hustle and bustle of the day or the original racing schedule. Despite this prestigious race being held in the June meeting in 2020 on an extra-ordinary card, last year it was staged back on the seasonal opener. The race had a typically competitive look to it, with plenty of talk abot the hot favourite Teed Up, who was sent off at 7/2. The gelding had already won three times, with three second place ﬁnishes but was quickly brushed aside when a below-par effort in 20th place. However, it was the Noel Meade-trained Layfayette who came out on top of the maxed out ﬁeld, with Chris Hayes doing the steering. An improving large type, Layfayette came to the Curragh fresh after ending the season well when a good seocnd behind Haparanda.

He had subsequently been gelded in the off-season and this seemed to make a major impact. Chris Hayes delivered his mount to perfection and once he hit the front, there was no stopping him. He eventually went on to score by half-a-length over the Ger Lyons-trained Maker Of Kings who also ran well in defeat, ﬁnishing second.

A filly who we could see improve further with age is the Joesph O’Brien-trained Arartha. A horse who ran well in pattern races as a maiden, she finally got off the mark at the fifth time of asking at Leopardstown when landing the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes by two and three quarter lengths. She then backed that victory up with an impressive victory here at the Curragh in the Group 2 Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes, sent off 4/1F. Just held by Discoveries in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes in September, she then went on to contest the Group 1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac on heavy ground, in which she was a respectbale fourth. With entries in both the English and Irish Guineas and the Irish Oaks, she clearly is one to follow throughout the season.

CURRAGH COMMENT San Andreas will likely prove popular given he comes here race-fit having got the better of Casanova and Bowerman when winning at Dundalk just over a fortnight ago. All three are expected to go well, but the eye is drawn to RAADOBARG in the first-time tongue-tie. It is fascinating that Johnny Murtagh has thrown him into this handicap on his first run for the yard and he was progressive last year for Roger Varian, winning three on the bounce. Still very lightly raced for a four-year-old, Kyprios clearly is still a colt with untapped potential heading into the new season. A well-bred colt related to many other classy individuals such as Search For A Song and Free Eagle, his pedigree suggests he can take another step forward this season. Although many of Aidan O’Brien’s horses are better second time out, Kyprios was a instant success story, landing a Galway Maiden on heavy ground under Seamie Heffernan. The four-year-old has subsequently been kept fresh, having just the four runs. However, he seems to be improving with each run and can be another top-class individual for connections.

Barberstown Castle Join Forces with The Curragh and Punchestown Barberstown Castle was unveiled this week as a major player on the Irish hotel and sporting hospitality scene with the announcement of a dual racecourse sponsorship that will see the county Kildare venue feature at both Punchestown, the home of Irish jump racing and The Curragh, home of Irish Flat racing. Barberstown Castle will become an official hotel partner of The Curragh Racecourse in an overall package that includes the sponsorship of the five race ‘Barberstown Castle Series’. The first leg of this initiative kicks off today and takes in races at some of the major classic weekends before the finale on 23rd October. At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
