A very warm welcome to Chepstow Racecourse as we celebrate our 100-Year Anniversary. Today marks a truly special occasion as we continue our 100th anniversary celebrations with Centenary Raceday, the second of two racedays dedicated to this historic milestone. Following our official anniversary on Thursday 6th August, we are delighted to welcome you back for this special additional fixture in our racing calendar as we celebrate a remarkable century of racing at Chepstow Racecourse. We have a fantastic afternoon in store, combining great racing with centenary-themed entertainment, heritage displays and plenty of family fun. Alongside the action on the track, look out for our stilt walkers, fête stalls and surf simulator, while the Back Lawn Stage will host live entertainment throughout the day, including Tom Jones tribute act Tom Jones & The Unusuals, Cahoots Duo and our resident DJ. Today we look back fondly on some of the incredible moments to have graced the racing surface here at Chepstow over the past 100 years. Those memories include several outstanding Welsh National winners, such as Corbiere, Bonanza Boy (twice), Native River, Dream Alliance and, most recently, a wonderful home winner for Wales in Haiti Couleurs. We’re thrilled to be joined by friends and partners from across the industry today to celebrate this wonderful milestone and reflect on so many memorable moments from our history. We also take a moment today to remember those who are no longer with us who have contributed so much to the racecourse, and to thank those still with us who have dedicated a lifetime to helping create and maintain such a wonderful venue. We’re thrilled to be hosting some of our employees, past and present, in the Restaurant today as we recognise and thank them for their many years of service. I’d also like to take a moment to thank the wider racing industry for its ongoing support of the racecourse. From owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff to vets, farriers, medical teams and the many others working behind the scenes, we all come together to make a raceday happen and play a vital part in ensuring our sport continues to operate at the very highest level. Without all of you, our sport simply would not be what it is, so thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the support you continue to show us here at Chepstow. “Due to circumstances beyond our control racing has had to be suspended, will you please evacuate the buildings by the emergency exits. You will be guided by members of the racecourse staff to speciﬁc assembly points, determined by which area you are in. Parade Ring

This is an ideal opportunity for racegoers to see the horses close up and assess their attitude and ﬁtness. The horses begin to parade 15-20 minutes before their race, and this is a great chance to pick your horse.

Placing a Bet

The Racecourse Betting shop is situated in the Grandstand & Paddock enclosure. The bookmakers are located in the betting ring in front of the main Grandstand.

After each race, the ﬁrst four placed horses are led into the Winners Enclosure where they are unsaddled and the jockeys take the saddle and weigh in. There are presentations by race sponsors to the connections of the winning horse on the winner’s podium.

This is located opposite the Winning Post and all jockeys weigh out here before each race. Their weight, including their saddle, should correspond SUBWAY with the weight shown in today’s racecard for their particular horse in that particular race. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE HISTORY March 1892

March 1927

Inaugural 2-day meeting of Chepstow Steeplechases took place at St Arvans, barely 2 miles from Piercefield Park, on 22nd and 23rd March with Henry Hastings Clay, owner of Priestfield House, acting as Steward. He later became a Director of Chepstow Racecourse Company.

First 2-day National Hunt meeting was scheduled for 2nd & 3rd March, the first race, the Hughes-Morgan Handicap Steeplechase over 2 miles 90 yards, was won by Phibisher (3/1) trained by Peacock and ridden by Waudby, but the weather was so atrocious that the second day was abandoned.

July 1927

Chepstow Grand Annual Steeplechase (2m 3f), billed as the most valuable race ever run in Monmouthshire, was staged on Wednesday 27th March when won by Princess Helena owned and trained by Tom Cannon. March 1914

The Welsh Derby and Oaks were held for the first time in July, the Welsh Derby going to Chantrey (11/8 fav) trained by Alec Taylor and ridden by Henri Jelliss; the Welsh Oaks, a disappointing 2 runner affair, went to Book Law (1/10 fav), with Taylor and Jelliss once again successful.

February 1925

Manton trainer Alec Taylor completed a treble of Welsh Classic victories when Sledmere (6/4) won the St Leger ridden by Bobby Jones.

Chepstow Racecourse Company was formed with the issuing of 150,000 £1 shares and purchased Piercefield House and land. Directors were Lord Tredegar, Lord Queenborough, Lord Glanely, Sir David Hughes Morgan, Lt-Col Sir Henry Webb, Hwfa Williams, Henry Hastings Clay, Ralph Elliott Morel, Ronald Cullimore Hugget, and Company Secretary G L B Francis. February 1925 Stewards of the Jockey club and National Hunt licensed a 2-mile circular racecourse and one mile straight course on the 350-acre Piercefield Park Estate. February 1925 Directors agreed to build 4 stone stands providing seating for 1500 in the Club enclosure, 2000 in Tattersall’s ring, and a special building for trainers and jockeys. Racecourse stables, close to Lion’s Lodge, had the capacity to house 126 horses on race days. The Great Western Railway agreed to build a new station to serve the racecourse. August 1926 The inaugural 2-day meeting at Piercefield Park was staged on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th August 1926 when a record crowd of 20,000 were in attendance. The opening race, the St Lawrence Selling Plate for 2-year-olds over 6 furlongs, went to Lord Harewood’s Corca D’Oro (7/4 fav) trained by Basil Jarvis and ridden by Henri Jelliss.

October 1933 One of the most remarkable two-day meetings ever held at Chepstow, on Wednesday 4th October Gordon Richards, who had won the last at Nottingham the previous day aboard Barnby, went through the card at Chepstow, a 6-winner feat last recorded by the great Fred Archer at Lewes on 5th August 1882. His six winners were Manner (4/6 fav), Brush Past (evens fav), Miss B (7/4 fav), Arcona (4/6 fav), Red Horizon (7/4 fav) and Delicia (5/4 fav). An enormous crowd attended the following day, Thursday 5th, to see if the champion jockey could continue the sequence of 7 straight wins, and he duly obliged on The Covenanter (evens fav), Kirrimuir (4/6 fav), June Rose (9/4), Montrose (4/7 fav) and a Lady Swift filly (evens fav), but was foiled by a head and neck in the last when riding Eagleray. July/October 1935 The 3 Welsh Classics were run at the course for the final time, proving uneconomic to sustain. Bideford Bay (7/1) won the Derby; Milldoria (11/4) won the Oaks; Soleil Du Midi (2/1 fav) won the St Leger. October 1939 On 1st October the Military Authorities took possession of the racecourse and it was to be almost 8 years before racing returned to Chepstow.

After the end of the Second World War the first meeting at Chepstow took place on Saturday 28th June 1947 when the Richards brothers, Gordon and Cliff, chalked up 3 wins between them, but the day will be remembered for a different reason. In the fourth race Glendower, ridden by Gordon Richards, was 1/20 favourite but Richards was thrown off as the tapes went up and failed to take part, leaving the race at the mercy of the only other runner, Markwell, who came home alone at 20/1.

The Persian War Novices Hurdle, a Grade 2 race formerly the Crick Hurdle, was run for the first time on Tuesday 1st February when won by The Dealer (15/8 fav) trained by Fred Winter and ridden by John Francome. The race was named after the 3-time Champion Hurdle winner Persian War, which was trained near to Chepstow Racecourse.

April 1949 The Welsh Grand National, inaugurated in 1895 at Ely Racecourse, Cardiff, was first staged at Chepstow on Tuesday 19th April when won by Fighting Line (7/1) trained by Ken Cundell and ridden by Dick Francis. Chepstow became the permanent home of the National thereafter and is now recognized as a Premier Handicap. April 1961 David Nicholson landed the Welsh Grand National aboard Limonali (7/4 fav) on Tuesday 4th April to become the only jockey to win 3 consecutive Grand National’s at Chepstow, having won on Limonali in 1959 and Clover Bud in 1960. September 1966 On 8 September 1966 Queen Elizabeth II opened the Severn Bridge, making the racecourse more accessible. The Directors had anticipated that its opening would increase crowd size, building a new Tote facility and refurbishing the Tattersalls Stand. th

October 1968 John Hughes was appointed Clerk of the Course on 17th July 1968, and took over from Captain Bobby Vivian, Clerk of the Course for 6 years, on 12th October. Hughes was already Clerk of the Course at Haydock Park, Leicester and Nottingham. April 1969 Inaugural running of the Welsh Champion Hurdle, a Class 2 race over 2 miles, took place on Easter Tuesday 8th April when won by Persian War (4/6 fav) trained by Colin Davies and ridden by Jimmy Uttley. February 1976 Rag Trade (17/2), in the hands of Jonathan Burke, won the Welsh Grand National on Saturday 21st February to become the only horse to win the Grand National at Chepstow and follow up in the Aintree Grand National in the same calendar year. Corbiere and Earth Summit later achieved the same double but in the same racing season rather than calendar year.

November 1988 The inaugural running of the Gold Handicap Hurdle, later the Class 2 Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle, was run on Saturday 5th November when won by Buckskin’s Best (16/1) trained by Robert Dickin and ridden by Richard Dunwoody. December 1989 Bonanza Boy (15/8 fav), trained by Martin Pipe and ridden by Peter Scudamore, became the only horse to win consecutive Welsh Grand Nationals at Chepstow when recording his second victory on Saturday 23rd December.2000 Sir Stanley Clarke became Chief Executive of the racecourse after acquiring an 80% stake in Chepstow Racecourse Plc, renaming it Northern Racing. October 2003 Chepstow Racecourse purchased Northern Racing Ltd in a reverse takeover. October 2011 The first running of the Robert Mottram Memorial Trophy, a Listed race, took place in October when won by Cue Card trained by Colin Tizzard and ridden by Joe Tizzard. The race was named in honour of its long serving head groundsman who tragically died of cancer in February 2010 aged just 50. March 2012 Arena Racing Company (ARC) took control of the racecourse.
