WELCOME We l c o m e to Chepstow Racecourse for our eagerly anticipated Coral Welsh Grand National Raceday, the highlight Luke Admans of our racing calendar. We are General Manager delighted to welcome you to what promises to be a thrilling celebration of Wales’ premier raceday, featuring seven exhilarating races, including the prestigious Coral Welsh Grand National at 2:50pm. As the feature race of the day, the Coral Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase has attracted a hugely competitive and talented field, including the 2023 winner Nassalam, alongside Jubilee Express, who arrives in excellent form having won the Coral Welsh Grand National Trial on 6th December 2025 and having finished a fine second in the Coral Welsh Grand National in December 2024. The line-up is further strengthened by Mr Vango, who comes here following an excellent second-place finish in the Becher Chase at Aintree. We are thrilled with the quality of runners taking to the track and wish all the horses, jockeys, and connections the very best of luck. A huge thanks must go to Coral, who have offered unwavering support of this fixture. For the last 53 years, Coral have proudly stood next to us to support our feature day of the season. Through abandonments, re-scheduled racedays, and sometimes tough Weather conditions, their support has never waivered and for that we are extremely grateful. The Coral Welsh Grand National is a raceday that is synonymous with the festive racing period, and is affectionately adored by a passionate local crowd. We are so proud to continue our partnership with Coral to bring you a tremendous day’s racing once again. We would also like to thank the owners and trainers for their ongoing dedication and for bringing their outstanding horses to Chepstow to once again light up the track. At the heart of racing are incredibly hard working stable staff, jockeys, trainers, farriers, medical staff, officials and operatives and without them we would have no racing. Thank you for your support and hard work to ensure racing is of the highest quality here at Chepstow.
Welcome to the 53rd year of our sponsorship of the Coral Welsh Grand National.
Simon Clare Coral PR Director
We are all very proud that Coral’s association with this historic horse race and Chepstow Racecourse is now into its sixth decade, making it one of the longest running sporting sponsorships in the World. This sponsorship more than any other reflects Coral’s long-standing commitment to horse racing in general, a commitment which has stepped up a gear over the last three years with the launch of the Coral Racing Club. The Coral Racing Club is free-to-join for Coral customers and gives members the experience of racehorse ownership of ten racehorses, including the opportunity to be an owner for the day when the horses run and keep a share of any prize money won. If you aren’t yet a Coral digital customer and would like to join up to take advantage of the free membership of the Coral Racing Club, as well as other benefits including the free-to-play Racing Super Series and Best Odds Guaranteed on Racing, then if you join today and Bet £10 you will be given £50 in free bets. Please see the advert in the racecard, or the info being promoted on the big screen, for further details, or wander over to the Bonanza Boy Marquee where the Coral Activation Zone is and there will be representatives who can help you sign up. Have a great day and a Happy New Year.
There is plenty of entertainment to enjoy throughout the day. Living Statues will welcome you on arrival, while our Resident DJ will keep the atmosphere buzzing between races. Racing fans can meet some of today’s jockeys and collect autographs in the Bonanza Boy Marquee at 10:45am, and the Coral Activation Zone will provide interactive fun throughout the day. We are also delighted to welcome the superbly talented Clara Greening and The Band of the Royal Welsh as they help mark the 2025 running of the Coral Welsh Grand National. Clara will perform the Welsh National Anthem in support of her chosen charity, LATCH, creating a truly special moment for everyone in attendance. After the final race, we invite you to stay and enjoy live music from The Jack Pack, who will perform approximately 15 minutes after racing concludes, at around 3:40pm, in the Bonanza Boy Marquee. Whether you are a lifelong racing enthusiast or visiting Chepstow Racecourse for the first time, today promises to be a truly unforgettable experience. Thank you for joining us, and we hope you have a wonderful and memorable day. We look forward to welcoming you back to Chepstow Racecourse very soon. TODAY’S TIPS RACE ONE
WIN: SPECTACULARSUNRISE
DANGER: GALASHIELS
The way SPECTACULARSUNRISE dispatched the opposition on his Kelso handicap debut earlier in the month suggests he’s potentially smart and he’s preferred to Lingfield winner Mossy Fen Road and Nicky Henderson Flat recruit Galashiels in this interesting opening novice.
RACE TWO
WIN: OAKLEY
DANGER: RAZZLE DAZZLE BOY
OAKLEY looked very much back in the groove at Hereford and may be able to defy the handicapper. Tim Vaughan’s Razzle Dazzle Boy is second choice ahead of unexposed handicap newcomer Cheesy Icon.
RACE THREE
WIN: BALLYBREEZE
DANGER: JOUR D’EVASION
A tight handicap in which a narrow vote goes to BALLYBREEZE, who can build on his reappearance and stretch his unbeaten C&D chase record to 3. Jour d’Evasion could have more to come on the back of his Bangor success and is second choice ahead of Siam Park.
RACE FOUR
WIN: MACKTOAD
DANGER: SONIC PIONEER
MACKTOAD looked a smart prospect when seeing off a couple of today’s rivals on his Sandown hurdle debut and can enhance his stable’s good recent record in this race. There was also lots to like about Sonic Pioneer’s winning start to his hurdle career and he’s second choice. Nicky Henderson French recruit Manlaga is another very interesting runner, particularly if the betting speaks for her.
RACE FIVE
WIN: AMBION VIEW
DANGER: KEABLE
AMBION VIEW had a next-time-out winner behind in third when second at Exeter last time and is taken to go one place better off the same mark. The thriving Keable is feared most ahead of Royal Rambler, who is likely in a bit better form than his 2 runs this season might suggest.
RACE SIX
WIN: ROCK MY WAY
DANGER: COLLECTORS ITEM
ROCK MY WAY had so much in hand at Ascot last time that even a 9 lb rise is potentially lenient. The main threat may come from Collectors Item, who is theoretically weighted to turn around recent course form with last year’s runner-up Jubilee Express. O’Connell, Mr Vango and Haiti Couleurs also make the shortlist.
RACE SEVEN
WIN: DONNACHA
DANGER: BEN SOLO
DONNACHA took another step forward when clear with a progressive sort at Exeter last time and could still be well treated even after a further 4 lb rise. Ben Solo is another chaser heading in the right direction and is second choice ahead of recent course scorer Toss of A Coin.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF RACING AT CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE We’re thrilled to have secured a very special Centenary Fixture on Sunday, 9th August 2026. This landmark event will celebrate 100 years of racing at Chepstow. We’ll be making many more announcements in due course about the day itself, along with a series of exciting celebrations planned across the year.
Chepstow fixture, he won all six races on the first day and the first five winners on the second, only to be beaten in the finale on an odds-on shot.
Burrough Hill Lad
As we look ahead to this milestone occasion, it is also a moment to reflect on the rich and fascinating story that Bindaree has shaped Chepstow Racecourse over the past century. From its early roots in the local landscape to its emergence as one of Welsh racing’s most significant venues, the history of racing at Chepstow is woven into the fabric of the sport itself. Jump racing was held near Chepstow off and on from at least as early as 1826 until 1914, latterly around Oakgrove and St Arvans. Racing began at the present Chepstow course in 1926, when it was laid out in the grounds of the Piercefield Park estate. The owner, racing fan Henry Hastings Clay, gathered a group of the great and the good (and the wealthy) of South Wales willing to invest in a new track even though there were already courses at Cardiff, Caerleon, Monmouth and Tenby. Chepstow, however, was going to be different; it would be built on a grand scale. But, as often happens with large projects, unforeseen problems and expenses arise. The cost had risen to £150,000 (roughly £8 million in today’s money) by 9 August 1926, when a huge crowd turned up for the first meeting. That early financial strain limited the Chepstow management’s ability to stage big races although Welsh Derbys, Oaks and St Legers featured briefly on the programme before World War II. The most notable event on course in that period was in 1933, when 26-time champion jockey Gordon Richards rode eleven consecutive winners here. After takng the last race at Nottingham the day before a two-day
Corbiere
In 1949 the closures of Cardiff and Caerleon meant Chepstow became the venue for the Welsh Grand National, which was first run in 1895.
From the 1960s the building of the M4 and the first Severn Bridge made Chepstow easily accessible for all the trainers in the Silver Birch southwest and as far east as Lambourn. These yards regularly bring their promising novices to run at Chepstow before going on to better things. The immortal Desert Orchid ran here without winning, but in more recent times great Cue Card and Altior have won here. Many high-class horses have won the Welsh Grand National en route to future Aintree National and Cheltenham Gold Cup success, the latest being Native River in 2016. One of Welsh sport’s premier annual events, it is well established as the biggest race on the day after Boxing Day, and is one of the busiest betting races of the year.

18+. UK & ROI. T&Cs apply.
TEN MEMORABLE WELSH GRAND NATIONAL WINNERS With the benefit of hindsight, Burrough Hill Lad being set to carry ten stone nine pounds in the 1983 Welsh National was a licence to print money. His trainer Jenny Pitman was so confident that his owners helped themselves to all the odds from 20/1 down to 100/30 and John Francome piloted him to a facile victory. Next year the horse proved himself the best chaser in the land by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, also taking the Hennessy and the King George VI Chase in the autumn. Cool Ground jumped well under Luke Harvey in the 1990 Welsh National, drawing clear three fences from home to win by seven lengths and provide the TV presenter with one of the highlights of his riding career. The horse won twice more before coming fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. After transferring to Toby Balding, in February 1992 he scored again over 3m6f at Chepstow. Even so, he was allowed to go off at 25/1 for another tilt at the Gold Cup, which he won by a short head. Trained in Ireland, Carvill’s Hill was one of the most talked-about horses of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He won 14 of his first 20 races, galloping his rivals into the ground. Unfortunately he was prone to back trouble, caused by jumping errors. In an attempt to rectify it he was sent to Martin Pipe and won the 1991 Rehearsal Chase at Chepstow convincingly. Next time out he dominated the Welsh National in unforgettable style, leading all the way under top weight. The 20-length runner-up, Party Politics, who carried 19 pounds less, went on to win the Grand National three months later. Chepstow being waterlogged, the 1994 Welsh National was run at Newbury on New Year’s Eve. The soft going that winter suited Master Oats, whose trainer Kim Bailey had worked wonders to solve the problem of the horse bursting blood vessels. He was always travelling supremely well for his regular jockey Norman Williamson and strolled to a 20-length win. Past and future Grand National winners Earth Summit and Party Politics were second and third. Four weeks later Master Oats won at Cheltenham by 15 lengths and in March he took the Gold Cup by the same margin. Nearly three years after winning the Scottish Grand National, in 1997 the Nigel TwistonDavies trained Earth Summit went off at 25/1 in the Welsh equivalent. It was his third start following a 634-day absence due to injury. He was never out of the first two and won by a length and three quarters from Dom Samourai, who had threatened to snatch the prize away from him in the final few yards. It was Earth Summit’s third course win. Later that season he won the Aintree National and so became the first horse to win English, Scottish and Welsh Nationals.
Often a good showing in the Welsh National is seen as a pointer towards Aintree success and that was the case with Bindaree, who was third in the Chepstow race before going on to take the Grand National in 2002. His trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies had been thinking of giving up the game at that point. Bindaree’s next win was in the 2003 Welsh National. In a great finish he held on by half a length from Sir Rembrandt, who a few months later finished the same distance behind Best Mate in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, with the future National winner Hedgehunter third. Silver Birch won the 2004 Welsh National in typically testing conditions. Trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Ruby Walsh, he was already the winner of five races, including two at Chepstow and the Becher Chase over the Aintree fences, all on soft or heavy ground. With so much going for him he was made the 100/30 favourite. After taking the lead at the third last he was all out to hang on from a host of pursuers. Later he lost his form and was sold, but his new trainer Gordon Elliott engineered an amazing revival and he won the Grand National in 2007. The well-named Dream Alliance was bred by a group of friends from a former mining village in Wales who wanted to try their luck at the Sport of Kings. He was brought up in the untypical surroundings of allotments and slagheaps before being sent to Philip Hobbs, where he proved good enough to finish second in the Hennessy to Denman. A tendon injury put him on the sidelines for 18 months, but he was skilfully nursed back to fitness and after a prep run at Chepstow he won the 2009 Welsh National. His story was made into a film, Dream Horse. Snow delayed the 2010 Welsh National until a week into the New Year. The chance of Synchronised was obvious, having won last season’s Midlands National over an even longer trip. With AP McCoy aboard he galloped on dourly to prevail by three lengths. His next four runs seemed to show his limitations, but then a surprise win in the valuable Lexus Chase at Leopardstown earned him an entry at the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He won that as well, to give owner JP McManus and trainer Jonjo O’Neill their first success in the race. In 2016 Native River was a rare top-weight winner of the Welsh National. Aged only six, and carrying 11 stone 12 pounds in soft ground, he led before halfway and was being hailed as the winner once he went clear four fences out. Raz De Maree, the runner-up, narrowed the gap without ever looking like winning, but his turn came a year later when he won the race. Native River finished third in the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup and won it the following year after an epic duel with Might Bite. Colin Tizzard’s handsome, bold-jumping chestnut, usually ridden by Richard Johnson, won 14 of his 32 starts.
