WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse. A warm welcome to Day Two of the Unibet Jump Season Opener. We are delighted that this fixture is now firmly established as the start of the autumn/winter jumping campaign in the UK. This year we are racing for £400,000 of prize money across the two days – a significant increase of more than £150,000 on last year. Today’s feature race is the £75,000 Wasdell Group Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle, a race first run at Chepstow in 1989. I would like to thank Martin Tedham and his team at the Wasdell Group for their sponsorship of this key race in our programme. One of the Silver Trophy’s first winners was the best; in 1990 the Josh Gifford trained Bradbury Star was on his way to becoming a top class all-rounder, combining classiness, versatility and resilience. He ran 58 times, winning 18 at all distances from two to three miles. Amazingly, he won eight times at Cheltenham. Most of Silver Trophy runners go on to thrive at longer distances and the 2007 winner was a prime example; that was Don’t Push It, who three years later gave A P McCoy his only winning ride in the Grand National (see page 30 for more details of the race history). Today other sponsors are Champion Hats, Dunraven Windows, the family of Geoffrey Broomhall. Brocade Racing, the family of John Ayers and Nigel & Sharon Wilks. I would like to thank them for their support and hope they have a relaxing and enjoyable day with us. This will be our busiest fixture since spectators returned to racecourses in July and we hope all our customers have an enjoyable afternoon with us. Staging this meeting last year behind closed doors was one of the weirdest experiences of my working life! Many thanks to my excellent team of office, operations and ground staff who have pulled together to get everything into place for the next two days of superb racing, hospitality and entertainment. I’m fortunate to work with such a dedicated and committed group of people. Don’t forget after racing we have the Oasis Experience playing live in the Bonanza Boy marquee. Please note that a Covid Pass will be required to attend all race meetings in Wales from October 11th and all the details are available on the Chepstow and Ffos Las websites. The first meeting where the Covid Pass will be required is the £50,000 Potter Group Welsh Champion Hurdle meeting at Ffos Las on Saturday 16th October. Finally, our next meeting at Chepstow is on Tuesday 26th October. PHIL BELL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses.

& FFD5 La5 Racing Club We are delighted to enter a third season of the Chepstow & Ffos Las Racing Club with a horse trained by Tim Vaughan. Even with the pandemic our loyal members have continued to enjoy the best of what was on offer and we feel we have a horse this season that can enter the winner's enclosure as others have in the past.
The Horse..
Gyllen - 6yo bay gelding. Gyllen was owned and bred by Godolphin before joining Tim last season. He has been learning his trade and looks to be well handicapped and ready to make his mark for us. The Trainer..
Tim Vaughan Tim was once Welsh Point To Point Champion and rode over a 100 winners between the flags. He then turned his hand to training and in April 2012 became the youngest National Hunt trainer to record a 100 winners in a season. He is well-placed geographically between the two tracks and we look forward to working with him. Here are his thoughts on the horse.. ‘Gyllen is a highly rated horse off the flat who previously ran for Godolphin and produced some exceptional performances including winning a group 2 at Maisons-Laffitte over 1m2f. We took him jumping last season and kept him to the minimum 2 miles and he improved throughout the season but now that he is handicapped over jumps and he has worked out the change between flat and jumps which took him some time I am extremely hopeful that he will really start to thrive over jumps and win plenty of races for the Chepstow & Ffos Las Racing Club’.
Club Benefits.. Owners & Trainers tickets when the horse runs. (subject to Racecourse conditions)
4 complimentary entry tickets to Chepstow or Ffos Las Racecourses. (2021-22 season - exc Welsh National)
Share of prize money (after leasing, training and racing costs) Regular updates and Pant Wilkin Stables visits Limited Membership & dedicated Racing Manager - Martin Higgs (personal experience guaranteed)

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The stable runs MAGISTRATO today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: FOREVER FORWARD trained by P Bowen, Haverfordwest, 123 miles. RACE SUMMARY
Paul Nicholls usually has a good one lined up for this and MAGISTRATO ticks all the boxes after a promising debut at Auteuil in the spring which saw him run to a Timeform rating of 120. He looks sure to improve and could take the beating. Rocky Man is another French recruit who is of firm interest for Dan Skelton and he looks to be the danger.

RACE ONE
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
Today’s Unibet Jump Season Opener sees the launch of a new book, “Champion Jump Horse Racing Jockeys”, the first publication to tell the story of all 22 post-war champions. It contains exclusive interviews with several of the surviving champions, many of whom will be present at Chepstow to mark the book’s publication with a celebratory lunch. Many of them have special memories of Chepstow, notably Peter Scudamore, who won four Coral Welsh Grand Nationals and Richard Johnson, who steered Native River to victory in the same race in 2016 by 15 lengths carrying top weight. Sir Anthony McCoy, the champion jockey on 20 consecutive occasions, also won the Welsh Grand National aboard Synchronised in 2010. He rode 119 winners at Chepstow. Further fresh insights in the book come from friends and families of the deceased champions and there is a foreword by Felix Francis, top-selling author of racing thrillers. He is the son of Welshman Dick Francis, the 1953/54 champion jockey, who will be remembered forever for losing the Grand National on Devon Loch when the horse inexplicably slid to the ground fifty yards from the winning post. Published by White Owl books, the 256 page hardback is profusely illustrated with photographs of all the champions in action. The book’s author Neil Clark is also a journalist and broadcaster who has written for the Racing Post and several national daily newspapers. In addition, he is a regular pundit on current affairs and sport on TV and radio. He will be signing copies at Chepstow, as will some of the jockeys featured in the book.

THE NATIVE RIVER CHASE THE NATIVE RIVER CHASE The Native River Handicap Chase over three miles was for a long time known as the Mercedes-Benz Chase, after the company that sponsored it from 1975-2000. From the word go it has been an important early season test for established staying chasers. Good Prospect, bought by the Prince of Wales to ride in races himself, won it in 1981, although Charles was not the jockey on that occasion. Broadheath won the race three times in a row in the 1980s, ridden by Paul Nicholls on the latter occasion and when finishing third in the following two years. Broadheath also won the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury in 1986. There have been plenty of pointers to future National winners. In 1989 the New Zealand-bred Seagram galloped to victory, eighteen months before his win in the Aintree Grand National. 2002’s winner Run For Paddy was destined to cause a 33/1 upset in the Scottish National four years later. The victor in 2017, Ballyoptic, went on to be beaten by a nose in the Scottish National. In 2019 the race was named in honour of the Gold Cup and Welsh National winner Native River. Last year’s winner Secret Investor was trained by Paul Nicholls, maintaining his 35-year connection with the race. The horse improved to beat his stablemate, the dual King George winner Clan Des Obeaux, in Newbury’s Denman Chase, putting him on the fringe of Gold Cup class. Prize money for this year’s race, sponsored by Native River’s owners Brocade Racing, has been increased to £50,000.

THE ROBERT MOTTRAM MEMORIAL TROPHY
ROBERT MOTTRAM NOVICES’ CHASE Sponsored by Dunraven WIndows
The two and a half mile novices chase at Chepstow’s Unibet Jump Season Opener, run in memory of the course’s late head groundsman Robert Mottram since 2012, has been the launch pad for a host of top class horses beginning their fencing careers. A race with these conditions was inaugurated a year earlier, and little did we know how brilliant two of its four runners would turn out. Cue Card was the winner, and though this much-loved horse amassed 16 career victories his fans will rue the one that got away; the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup, which was his for the taking when he fell at the third last. Finishing third to Cue Card in the Chepstow race was Silviniaco Conti, another brilliant winner of 16 races, including seven Grade 1s. Fields can be small but select, with runners liable to come from all the leading southern stables. Cocktails At Dawn never won another race after taking 2015’s Robert Mottram Memorial Trophy, but he had Native River, Blaklion and Regal Encore behind him. They would be successful in twenty more races between them, including a Gold Cup. And in 2016 Clan Des Obeaux, who in future would run away with the King George VI Chase at Kempton twice, was fourth behind the Chepstow course specialist Rock The Kasbah. It’s not just the Robert Mottram winners that ought to go into your notebooks. This year’s race has been sponsored by Dunraven Windows.

A case can be made for all of these, but Paul Nicholls took this contest 12 months ago and his FIDELIO VALLIS is fancied to put his chasing experience to excellent use and make it five wins on the spin. Captain Tom Cat saw his own winning spree ended when fifth in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen but he emerged with plenty of credit and is feared most along with chasing debutant Tea Clipper. 1-2-3: 1.FIDELIO VALLIS (FR) 2.CAPTAIN TOM CAT (IRE) 3.TEA CLIPPER (IRE) KEY colours

THE SILVER TROPHY SILVER TROPHY: A BRIEF HISTORY The Silver Trophy is a two and a half mile handicap hurdle, first run in 1989. For the second successive year it has been sponsored by the Swindon based Wasdell Group with the prize money raised to £75,000 (from £40,000). One of its first winners was the best; in 1990 Bradbury Star was on his way to becoming a top class all-rounder, combining classiness, versatility and resilience. He ran 58 times, winning 18 at all distances from two to three miles. Amazingly, he won eight times at Cheltenham. Most of Silver Trophy runners go on to thrive at longer distances and the 2007 winner was a prime example; that was Don’t Push It, who three years later gave A P McCoy his only winning ride in the Grand National. Horses placed in the Silver Trophy have also been worth following in staying chases. Fourth in 2011 was The Giant Bolster, who would finish second, third and fourth in three Cheltenham Gold Cups. Vieux Lion Rouge, third in 2014, has won 13 times in all and until this year had never fallen in nine races over the Grand National fences. In fourth that year was Regal Encore, successful six times later including four at Ascot. Court Minstrel was a 40/1 success for South Wales trainer Evan Williams in 2015, and he became the only dual winner of the race when scoring again two years later. The form of the latter race turned out to be excellent. Six of the first eight home won again before long. Tea Clipper took the 2020 Silver Trophy in convincing style, finishing six lengths ahead of the previous year’s winner Flash The Steel. In the spring he was third in two big handicaps at Cheltenham and Aintree and will surely be a force to be reckoned with in novice chases this season. A year before the first running of the race the October fixture included a “Chepstow Gold Hurdle” with the same conditions, but silver has proved much longer-lasting.

RACE SUMMARY There should be more to come from ORBYS LEGEND this season and, having looked good at Sandown when last seen in March, he is taken to make a winning handicap bow off what looks a potentially handy mark. Fellow handicap debutants The Wrekin and Dargiannini are feared most, in that order of preference, while Proschema also needs considering, despite top-weight. The stable runs DOLOS and GRAND SANCY today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: NOT THAT FUISSE trained by D Skelton, Alcester, 62 miles. RACE SUMMARY
GRAND SANCY was a bit underwhelming in handicaps last season, but his winning return in a listed event over C&D this time last year sticks in the mind, so he’s fancied to repeat the feat off a handy mark. His stablemate, Dolos, is also expected to run well, while it would be no surprise were Five Star Getaway to resume progress having been freshened up. All in all, a fascinating contest. 1-2-3: 1.GRAND SANCY (FR) 2.DOLOS (FR) 3.FIVE STAR GETAWAY (IRE) KEY colours
