Racegoers are advised to wear attire suitable to the weather conditions, however patrons in the Premier Enclosure are requested not to wear sports shorts, ripped denim or football shirts. Shirts must be worn at all times in all enclosures.

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. In the event of a race meeting being abandoned after the first race has been run, no refund will be made in respect of admission charges and emergency admission tickets will be invalid.
Admission Policy
The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to, or expel any person from, the racecourse, without assigning a reason for so doing, and does not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to persons or to their property.
Disabled Users
Free parking is available by the turnstiles for blue badge holders. For disabled visitors requiring a carer, the carer is admitted free of charge. There is disabled access to both restaurants and a variety of disabled toilets across the racecourse.
Dress Code
Should an incident occur which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced security staff to be located at various points throughout the Racecourse. This information is precautionary and we trust the procedures will not be needed. Please remember in the event of an emergency, to take your belongings with you and under the direction of Brighton Racecourse representatives, proceed quickly and quietly to the agreed area.
The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse. Mobile telephones may not be used in or near any designated betting area, or for offcourse betting purposes. Further details are available from the racecourse office.
Photography
The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

SCENIC ROUTE TO A FAVOURITE DESTINATION Good afternoon and welcome to Brighton races. This red-hot summer has brought back memories of crowds six-deep around the parade ring and holidaymakers basking in the sun. This is a very special day for me with my final sponsored races due off at 3.30 and 4.00. I’d just like to pass on my best wishes to young Jack Dace for a complete recovery and return to the saddle after his horrific fall recently. He is a very talented lad and we need him. As it happens, I was always going to write about his dad because I’m often asked about the best Ashforth-Carnaby seller (a fairly low-scoring contest) and Luke takes the cigar with something to spare. It was an extraordinary race in 2001 with the longest Brighton trip of a mile and a half attracting EIGHTEEN runners - a sight I could hardly believe but there they all were. ‘The bigger the field, the bigger the certainty’ is an old racing adage but those who made Scenic Lady 5/1 favourite must have rubbed their eyes when she cruised through, led before the two-furlong pole and readily went five lengths clear. Luke bought her in for 3,200 guineas and thirteen days later she won a non-seller at Lingfield. Winners of my race don’t do that sort of thing, but I was very pleased for her. I’ve always loved Brighton, it’s raffish and easy-going, town and racecourse alike. I go all the way back to Operatic Society and Tintagel II, Richmond Sturdy’s best horse, who had an ‘easy’ before bolting up for Lester in the Ebor at York. I loved tales of Charlie Smirke (‘What did I Tulyar?’) sleeping under a tarpaulin on the beach when he was suspended, and I wanted to emulate Doug Marks, who persuaded Flanagan & Allen of the Crazy Gang to get involved. The winning owner in their race received a wooden chess set. Perilously close to exam time I took a couple of trains from Cambridge and made it here in time for the opening apprentice handicap. I stood by the two-furlong pole - I still do - and watched Tom Waugh’s Boyst score at 8/1. In those days, the late 60s, you could buy a Raceform booklet upon arrival. Minus two -2 before a horse’s name - was a real positive because it meant Raceform rated it 2lbs to the good. Boyst was -2 and won comfortably. Oh, happy, happy day! Sometimes you get a hint about the life to come, the only problem being that not all the Boysts win. I’ve been a die-hard punter and occasional boardman here and I’ve also been an owner. My small syndicate owned a charming filly called Mrs Leadbetter, named after Margo Leadbetter, played by the sadly deceased Penelope Keith in The Good Life. The equine Mrs L didn’t take to Brighton and almost fell down the hill with George Duffield virtually pulling her up. Gavin Pritchard-Gordon seldom ran a horse again quickly and I was working on a script for BBC World Service when she turned out at Nottingham, which is as flat as the proverbial pancake. She loved it and sprinted five lengths clear under Mark Rimmer. It takes a while to recover from missed 25/1 winners, but I should get there any day now. The thing is, I like modest horses who try their best. When Duggan hacked up at Catterick in 1990, digging me out of a frightening financial hole, I thought he’d go on to better things. Sadly, by the time he scrambled home in a Brighton seller (33/1) five years later, his rating had dropped from 74 to 25. Various owners and trainers lost faith, but I stayed loyal. Well, Brighton is Brighton and there’s something about 33/1 isn’t there? Have a great afternoon at a great place. Ian Carnaby
