Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating birthplace of horse if not Great Britain

A GOOD LIFE IN GREAT COMPANY

Good afternoon and welcome to Brighton for the 29th running of the Ian Carnaby Handicap.

I was thinking about various connections I have with the course and was saddened by the recent passing of actor Ray Brooks. Ray was born in Brighton, and many will remember him not only for his roles in Coronation Street and Eastenders but also as Robbie Box in the 1984-86 series Big Deal.

The programme depicted betting shops very much as they were in those dayssmoky bolt-holes with proper gaps between races and no pictures, just the sound commentary with a final furlong going on forever, especially if yours was in front. Ray was very convincing as a capable gambler who seemed unlucky at every twist and turn

I worked in betting shops in my younger days and was a boardman here when the shop was exactly where it is now. It was a strange experience because all I could hear was the drumming of hooves getting closer with the roar of the crowd a fair guide to the fate of the favourite.

Later on, when I was working for BBC Radio, I saw Dancing Brave win a hugely competitive Arc de Triomphe, but I was happy enough to get back to see The Ute win a tiny race here a day or so later. I reported that he had a real turn of foot, though whether people acknowledged the tongue-in-cheek irony following Dancing Brave’s memorable burst I’m not sure

The Ute was trained by an ebullient character called Rufus Voorspuy, who also had The Little Hut and Peach Brandy. I loved them all and Rufus would always ring me up when I mentioned them. Sadly, he too has gone.

As a part-owner I had runners here including Mrs Leadbetter, who was named after Margot Leadbetter, played by Penelope Keith in the tv series The Good Life

The equine Mrs L, trained by Gavin Pritchard-Gordon, was fancied here but practically fell down the hill and George Duffield wisely let her coast in. A matter of days later she went to Nottingham (flat track) and bolted up at 25/1 under Mark Rimmer (no, since you ask) When she went to the sales, we expected a tidy profit but an unsightly boil on her bottom didn’t help. Could happen to anyone, really I have a smaller number of guests this year and it’s a pity David Ashforth is missing but typical of him to ferry some ancient folk to and from hospital What a man. Geordie Ray Wilson is here with his family, though, together with Mart Matthews, who has witnessed all 28 races to date

Ray celebrated his 80th birthday at home in Northumberland last Saturday but ten years ago the party was in the Marina Suite. It never stopped raining, and non-runners were announced every few minutes. The Placepot took on a new dimension and paid over £10,000

Mart, whose view of modern life might be best described as critical - I was going to say waspish but critical will do - has recently written a book of poems entitled On Thin Ice. I thought you might like this, on golf:

‘There’s a Justin and a Dustin

And a Tiger and a Phil They get their clubs from corporate

And never pay a bill

There’s a Faldo and a Seve

And an Arnie and a Jack 36 majors between them means that they’re the ones to back.’

- won this race in 2021

Well, I suppose we could look at Godolphin and Ballydoyle in the same way, but the prices are short. Or there’s my mother’s system favouring horses with the recent form figures 020. ‘See boy, they were trying with it the time before last, then it had to be covered over again.’ Yes, I see. Indeed, I understood at 13 I never had a chance, really Kranjcar fits the bill in my race but Tony Carroll has a habit of winning it, so You Are Everything is a big danger.

Have a great day and see you again next year, I hope.

WEIGHTWATCHER: MC’TED won off a handicap mark of 60, his rating is now down 8lb to 52. LONGEST TRAVELLER: NIGHT BEAR trained by T Carroll, Cropthorne, 175 miles.

This is wide open but MC’TED posted his best effort of the season when runner-up over C&D last time and can capitalise on a 1lb lower mark here at the chief expense of C&D scorer Voix de Bocelli who should find this drop back in trip to his favour. Guendolen and Destinado are both weighted to have a say too.
