URBAN LONELINESS IS REAL. ALTHOUGH SURROUNDED BY MILLIONS, LIVING IN A DENSITY METROPOLITAN HONG KONG CAN HARM ONE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. THE COMPACT LIVING ENVIRONMENT IS TO BE BLAMED FOR URBAN ISOLATION AND THE STRESS, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION ASSOCIATED WITH IT. SOME THINK THAT IT IS INEVITABLE THAT WE DENSIFY OUR CITY AND THAT MORE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ARE THE SOLUTION. THIS THESIS EXPLORES DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO TACKLE THE MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM EXISTING IN THE HIGH-DENSITY LIVING IN HONG KONG. BY IMPROVING THE URBAN-LIVING ENVIRONMENT WITH BIOPHILIC DESIGN AND ENHANCING COMMUNITY BUILDING THROUGH CO-LIVING, RESIDENTS CAN HAVE A GREATER SENSE OF CONNECTION TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AND THE PLACE THEY CALL “HOME”.

TAKING OUT APARTMENT FOR COMMUNITY GARDEN. COMMUNITY GARDEN AS THE NODE POINT FOR A GATHERING SPACE FOR RESIDENTS, VERTICAL CONNECTION OF DIFFERENT PATCHES TO BURY THE BOUNDARY OF THE BUILDING.

PROGRAMS THAT ARE SHARED BY THE RESIDENTS. LOCATED IN RESIDENTIAL FLOOR WITH DIRECT ACCESS FROM DIFFERENT FLOOR FROM INTERIOR CIRCULATION.

CABLE SYSTEM FOR THE LONG SPAN STRUCTURE TO SUPPORT THE UPPER DEVELOPMENT. THE LONG SPAN AND THE STRUCTURAL CORE AS A BASE TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE RESIDENTIAL UNITS UPON IT.

THE PATTERN OF THE NEW FACADE IS ARRANGE WITH THE SUNLIGHT ANALYSIS TO OPTIMIZE THE DAYLIGHT INTAKE OF EVERY UNITS. SUN SHADING ANALYSIS OF THE FACADE OF THE NEW BUILDING.

GARDEN AS NODE POINTS FOR RESIDENTS. SCATTERED EVERYWHERE IN THE BUILDING AS A SPACE THAT CONNECT EVERYONE. EASY ACCESS BY INTERNAL STAIRS THAT SHORTEN THE TRAVEL DISTANCE TO THE OUTDOOR SPACE.

FOR PUBLIC PROGRAMS LOCATED AT THE UPPER PART, THEY ARE POSITION AT THE SIDE NEXT TO THE CORE TO PROVIDE MORE PRIVACY FOR THE RESIDENTS BY SEPARATING THEM WITH THE RESIDENTIAL AREA.

HEXAGON STRUCTURE FOR MODULAR SINGLE UNITS BLOCKS FOR EXTRA STABILITY.

SIZE OF THE OPENING OF THE NEW BUILDING IS ADJUSTED ACCORDING THE SUNLIGHT PERFORMANCE TO MAXIMIZED THE SUNLIGHT RECEPTION OF EVERY UNITS

DOUBLING THE SIZE OF THE THE EXISTING UNITS OF THE SAME SIZE. ELDERLY COUPLES OCCUPIED THE LOWER FLOORS WHICH IS EASIER TO TRAVEL YOUNG COUPLES OCCUPIED THE UPPER FLOORS WITH MORE FLEXIBILITY IN THE LAYOUT.

FITZROY HAS A DIVERSE CULTURAL BACKGROUND. FOOD IS ALWAYS THE EASIEST MEDIA TO CONNECT PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT RACES, AGES AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS. LETTING PEOPLE PREPARE THEIR HOME CUISINES WITH FRESH PRODUCTS GROWN IN THE FITZROY COMMILLS WILL BE A MEANINGFUL WAY TO PRESENT AND LEARN ABOUT ONE’S CULTURE. ALSO, THE FOOD PREPARED IN THE COMMUNE KITCHEN CAN HELP AND SUPPORT THE LESS PRIVILEGED GROUPS IN FITZROY.



THE SITE IS LOCATED AT THE FITZROY MILL. IT IS A CARPARK WHICH WILL TURN INTO A FLEA MARKET DURING WEEKENDS, SELLING LOCAL GOODS AND FOODS. THE PROJECT INTENDED TO DEVELOP ON THIS IDEA.

THE “LIFT UP” METHOD WILL MAKE THE DESIGN TOO BULKY, TO REDUCE THE MASS, THE GREEN AREA ARE LOCATED ON EACH FLOOR WHICH ARE ALSO PUSHED BACK TO ALLOW MORE SUNLIGHT ON THE LOWER FLOOR.

ADEQUATE LIGHTING LEVELS ARE IMPORTANT FOR OCCUPANT HEALTH AND NATURAL LIGHT CAN INCREASES BOTH PRODUCTIVITY AND MENTAL HEALTH. TO MAXIMIZE NATURE LIGHTING OF THE INTERIOR SPACE, THE SLOPE OF THE PARK AREA IS REARRANGE.

THE OFFICE AREA (IN BLUE COLOUR) ARE THE MORE PRIVATE SPACE IN THE BUILDING. THE COMMUNITY AREA (IN YELLOW COLOUR) ARE CONNECTED IN DIFFERNET WAYS AND HAVE MULTIPLE ENTRY POINT.

THE PROJECT IS AIMED TO DESIGN A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL CENTER WHICH CAN SATISFIED THE DAILY NEEDS FOR THE COMMUNITY, ENHANCING A BALANCE BETWEEN ECONOMICAL, COMMUNITY AND NATURE.

THE PROGRAMS ARE RESHUFFLE TO ENSURE THE WORKERS CAN HAVE EASILY ACCESS TO DIFFERENT COMMUNITY SPACE WHICH PROVIDE A MORE FREE AND OPEN WORKING ENVIRONMENT THAT BENEFIT TO WORK.

IT WILL BE TOO STEEP FOR PUBLIC TO WALK ON IF THE SLOPES ARE EVENLY DISTRIBUTED. SO THE STARTING PARK WILL BE MORE GENTLE AND IT WILL GET STEEPER WHICH THEY UP.

TO MAXIMIZED THE USE OF SPACE, THE BUILDING ARE CONSTRUCTED WITH SIMPLE STRUCTURE OF COLUMNS AND TRUSS BEAMS WITH DIAGONAL SUPPORT ON THE FACADE.

THE IDEAL IS TO TURN THE WHOLE SITE AREA INTO PARK, WHICH MEANS THE BUILDING HAS TO LIFT UP TO FREE UP MORE GROUND SPACE.

THE PUBLIC HAVE TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE PARK AREA, IT WILL BE IDEAL IF THE PARK CAN SLOPE TOWARDS THE STREET AND IT WILL BE MORE WELCOMING AND INVITING TO THE PUBLIC.

THE FIRST TWO SEGMENTS ARE THE MOST PUBLIC AREA, WHICH ARE AIMED FOR PUBLIC AND RECREATIONAL USE. THE THIRD SEGMENT WILL BE MORE PRIVATE, MAINLY FOR EXERCISING. THE FOUR SEGMENT ONLY FOR CREATING A SMALL ECOSYSTEM IN THE BUILDING .

THE DIAGONAL GRID FACADE MAXIMIZED THE PERMEABILITY OF THE BUILDING, AS THE GROWING AREA ARE LOCATED AROUND THE FACADE OF THE BUILDING AND A GOOD VENTILATED SPACE IS ESSENTIAL FOR PLANT GROWTH.

IT CONTAIN A LUMINANT DETECTOR, WHICH WILL AUTOMATICALLY CONTROL THE OPEN OR CLOSE OF THE SUN SCREEN TO REGULATE THE AMOUNT OF THE SUNLIGHT RECEIVED.

AN AEROPONIC FARMING SYSTEM REQUIRED HUGE ROOT SPACE FOR ROOT PLANT LIKE POTATO. TO FACILITATE WORKERS HARVESTING THE FOOD, THE PLANTER IS ARRANGED IN A TRIANGULAR SHAPE, SO THAT ONE CAN EASILY ACCESS TO THE UNDER. IT SIMPLE REUIRED ONE TO OPEN THE DOOR AND THE FOOD WILL BE AT EYE LEVEL. BENDING IS NOT REQUIRED.

THE DAZHAI TERRACED FIELD IS MAGNIFICENT ON SITE. ITS AGRICULTURAL PURPOSE AND ARCHITECTURAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HAPPY ANCIENT VILLAGE ALSO INSPIRE US A LOT WHILE DESIGNING THE PAN-MUSEUM FOR THE SITE. FIRST, WE THINK THE TERRAIN OF THE SITE SHOULD BE BEAUTIFIED AND MORE PEOPLE COULD ENJOY, SO WE ENLARGE FOUR PLATES BY EXTENDING OUT THE EXISTING CONTOUR LINES OF THE TERRAIN. IN ORDER TO RESPECT THE NATURE AND MAKE THE ARCHITECTURAL GESTURE AS LIGHT AS POSSIBLE, WE SIMPLY ADD FOUR PIECES OF WALL ON SITE WHICH LARGELY BORROWS THE FORM OF WESTERN SICHUAN ROOFSCAPE TO DEFINE THE NEW EXTERIOR LANDSCAPES AND DIFFERENT SCALES OF THE EXHIBITION SPACES INSIDE. FINALLY, THE AR-CHITECTURE IS FORMED SPECIFIC TO THIS VILLAGE.





FORM-FINDING PROCESS: THE SITE IS SITUATED ON THE DAZHAI TERRACED FIELD. THE MASS NEEDS TO PUT AT THE WEST SIDE AS REQUIRED, THAT BECOMES THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE BUILDING.


BY TERRACING THE MASS, THE WHOLE ARCHITECTURE COULD MAINTAIN JUST ONE STOREY FOR EVERY LEVEL WHICH ALSO BLEND INTO THE SITE CONTEXT VERY WELL.



IF WE PUT 3000 SQM AREA OF SINGLE STOREY ON SITE, IT WILL LOOK TOO MASSIVE. STRUCTURALLY IT WILL ALSO BE TOO EXPENSIVE TO GET BUILT.




THE MAIN ENTRANCE WILL SET IN THE WEST SIDE WHERE HAS FLATTEST TERRAIN AND CLOSEST TO THE VILLAGE ENTRANCE. THE PROGRAMME WILL THEN DISTRIBUTE FROM PUBLIC TO PRIVATE: AMENITY -> EXHIBITION -> OFFICE.



IF WE STACK UP THE MASS IN THREE STOREYS, THE FOOTPRINT HAS IMPROVED BUT THE HEIGHT STILL LOOKS OUT OF SCALE ON SITE.







THE GRAND STEPS CONNECT ALL DIFFERENT AREAS AND LEVELS TO LET VISITORS FLOW FREELY IN THE MUSEUM.
WE HAVE CREATED GRAND STEPS AS A PUBLIC LANDSCAPE TO CONNECT ALL THE PROGRAMME. WHEN THEY WALK FURTHER DOWN TO THE MAIN EXHIBITION SPACE, THE BEST MOUNTAIN VIEW IS REVEALED IN FRONT OF THEM. AMENITY







DIFFERENT SCALES AND LEVELS OF INTIMACY OF SPACE ARE CREATED BY SOME RAMMED EARTH CYLINDERS.







SOME RAMMED EARTH CYLINDERS ARE HALF OPEN TO CREATE SPACES LIKE AMPHITHEATRE AND PUBLIC PLAZA.





SOME CYLINDERS ARE CLOSED TO CREATE SPACES SUCH AS BLACKBOX AND AMENITY LIKE WC, PANTRY, STORAGE ETC.






THE GRAND STEPS WILL LEAD VISITORS DOWN TO THE MAIN EXHIBITION SPACE AT -3F WHICH HAS A BIG OPEN SPACE AND A MAGNIFICENT VIEW TO THE SURROUNDING MOUNTAIN SCENARIES.

NATURAL LIGHT IS INTRODUCED INTO THE SPACE THROUGH THE CIRCULAR SKYLIGHTS.

ELEPHANT GROUNDS IS LOOKING FOR A NEW CONCEPT STORE WITH A CASUAL SEATING AREA AND A PROPER DINING SPACE INFUSED WITH THE OWNER’S POP ART COLLECTIONS. APART FROM THE SIGNATURE ELEPHANT GROUNDS DUAL-TONE PINE TIMBER, ORANGE FABRIC, BLACK METAL, AND LIVE PLANT, WE DEVELOPED A UNIQUE “ELEPHANT GROUNDS ” RECONSTITUTED STONE TO COMPLETE THE NEW BRANDING IDENTITY. THE WHITE RECONSTITUTED STONE WITH ORANGE AGGREGATE IS USED ON THE U-SHAPE BENCH, BAR TABLE AND FLOORING. THE HOMOGENEOUS LOOKS FORM A SCULPTURAL BASE FOR THE INTERIOR THAT SUCCESSFULLY HIDES TWO MASSIVE COLUMNS IN THE SPACE, WHICH OPENS UP SPACE AND THE WHOLE RETAIL EXPERIENCE BECOMES MORE WELCOMING AND VISUALLY TRANSPARENT.
TO RESPOND TO THE BOHEMIAN HEXAGONS, THE ASYMMETRICAL FOREST-LIKED HONEYCOMB CANOPY OF THE SHOPPING MALL, WE DESIGNED A PARAMETRIC S-SHAPE BENCH FOR THE OUTDOOR SEATING AREA. AN ORGANIC FORM IS APPLIED TO THE BENCH WHICH ECHOES THE NATURAL ELEMENTS AND GARDEN LANDSCAPE OF THE BOHEMIAN GARDEN, BLENDING INTO THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT.

THE SHOP INTERIOR IS DIVIDED INTO CASUAL SEATING + DINING AREA (SERVED SPACE) AND BAR + CLOSED KITCHEN (SERVANT SPACE).

TWO MASSIVE STRUCTURAL COLUMNS ARE LOCATED IN THE PREMISE. TWO HORIZONTAL ELEMENTS ARE DESIGNED TO WRAP AROUND THE COLUMNS SO THAT THEY WILL HAVE LESS IMPACTS ON THE INTERIOR SPACE.

VERTICALITY OF THE SPACE MORE U-SHAPE BENCH AND A L-SHAPE WRAP AROUND THE COLUMN.

TIMBER BATTENS AND BLACK CERAMIC TILES ARE USED TO CREATE A CONTRAST FROM THE WHITE TERRAZZO FLOORING. THE TROPICAL PLANTS USED FURTHER EMPHASIS THE BOHEMIAN GARDEN THEME AND GIVE THE COSTUMERS HOMEY FEELING.

STRETCHED CEILING ARE USED ABOVE THE FOOD PREPARATION AREA TO IMITATE GENTLE SUNLIGHT, PROVIDING A COMFORTABLE AND RELAXING AREA.

THE BRIEF IS TO CREATE A SPEAKEASY PUB LOCATED IN THE SOHO CENTRAL, A NEIGHBOURHOOD PACKED WITH BARS, RESTAURANTS AND ENTERTAINMENT VENUES. THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THIS DESIGN IS THE “A BAR WITHIN A BAR” CONCEPT, THE CLIENT REQUESTS AN INTIMATE “SPEAKEASY” BAR SERVING EXCLUSIVE GUESTS ONLY. THE CLIENT WOULD LIKE THE TWO BARS TO HAVE “TOTALLY DIFFERENT” STYLES BUT AT THE SAME TIME SERVED BY THE SAME CLOSED KITCHEN AND WCS AT THE FAR BACK.
FOR THE FRONT BAR DESIGN, WE REFERENCED CLASSIC GASTROPUBS SUCH AS FITZ’S IN LONDON. WE TRY TO INCORPORATE A CLASSIC INTERIOR STYLE WITH A SIGNATURE BACK ARCH WALL AS A CENTREPIECE BUT WITH A MODERN TOUCH. THE FAÇADE WE HOPE ONLY HINTS AT PART OF THE INTERIOR FROM THE OUTSIDE WHILE SEDUCING PASSERSBY TO WALK FROM ONE END TO THE SIDE ENTRANCE. IN THE SPEAKEASY BAR, WE AIMED TO CREATE A MORE LIVELY SPACE WITH A LOT OF TIMBER LINING AND BRASS DETAILS. FOR THE VANITY CORRIDOR THAT CONNECTS BOTH FRONT AND BACK BARS TO THE WCS AND KITCHEN, A CONTRACTED PINK SPACE LINKS UP TWO DIFFERENT THEMES WHILE A SECRETIVE, HUE MIRROR SLIDING DOOR IS DESIGNED TO DISGUISE THE ROOM BEHIND.

ALTHOUGH THE TWO BARS ARE IN VERY DIFFERENT STYLES, WE KEEP A CONSISTENT “MATERIAL NARRATIVE” THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE VENUE. BRASS IS USED IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS, FROM THE CURVED PEBBLEDASH WALL AND RIBBON BRASS WINDOW FRAME ON THE FACADE OUTSIDE TO THE FRONT BAR THAT INCORPORATES CUSTOM BRASS DETAILS WITH THE BROWN LEATHER BANQUETTE SEATING. THE TWO BIG ARCH DISPLAYS MATCHED WITH THE FABRIC WALLPAPER IN SUBTLE METALLIC GOLD EFFECTS BECOME THE FEATURE IN THE ROOM. FOR THE MATT PINK VENETIAN PAINT CORRIDOR AND INSIDE THE BACK BAR, WE HAVE ALSO SELECTED SOME FEATURE LIGHTS AND FURNITURE IN BRUSHED BRASS FINISH TO KEEP THE COHERENCE.

BLACK SUGAR COFFEE

THE MAJOR CHALLENGE IN DESIGNING THIS MICRO CAFE IS SIZE. THE SITE IS ONLY 8.8 SQM WHILE THE MINIMUM LICENCED FOOD AREA OF THE CAFE NEEDS TO BE 6 SQM. A PAIR OF BIG PIVOT TERRAZZO DOORS HAS BECOME THE KEY ELEMENTS IN THE DESIGN. SWINGING THEM OPENING INCREASES 50% OF THE MICRO COFFEE SHOP SHAPE, AND THEY LINK UP THE COOL EXTERIOR TO THE WARM MAPLE WOOD INTERIOR. WHILE THE SHOPKEEPER OPENS THE SHOP EVERY DAY, THE BIG SWINGING GESTURE HAS BECOME A NEW RITUAL AND A WARM WELCOME FOR THE CUSTOMERS.
THE INNER SIDE OF THE PIVOT DOOR IS A SHELVING SERVING AS A RETAIL CORNER, THE INCREASED SHOP AREA WILL ALSO SERVE AS THE “OUTDOOR” SEATING. THE PIVOT DOOR ALSO FURTHER EXTENDS THE ORIGAMI FEATURE WALL INSPIRED BY THE SHOP LOGO AT THE BACK OF THE COFFEE CORNER TO MAKE THE SHOP VISUALLY EVEN BIGGER. FOR THE INTERIOR, ALL THE FIXED FURNITURE IS LINED WITH MAPLE WOOD VENEER CONTRACTED WITH THE CONCRETE FLOORING. THE EXTERIOR FAÇADE OF THE SHOP HAS USED THE BRONZE LINING WITH LED LIGHT STRIP TO HIGHLIGHT THE SHOP GEOMETRY TO MAKE THE VOLUME MORE POP – AS IF A FLOATING CUBE TUCKED AWAY FROM QUEEN ROAD CENTRAL.

THE LOGO OF BLACK SUGAR COFFEE IS DESIGNED BASED ON THE ORIGAMI OF THE SHIBA OF THE OWNERS. THE FEATURE WALL EXTENDED THIS IDEA, OFFSETTING THE OUTLINE OF THE LOGO AS FOLDING LINE AND CREATE AND ORIGAMI SHAPE WALL.

THE ORIGAMI FEATURE WALL ALSO ECHO THE IDEAING FOLDING BOX OF THE WHOLE DESIGN. THE UNEVEN WALL CREATES A MORE DYNAMIC INTERIOR AND HELP ENLARGE THE SPACE VISUALLY.

THE CHRISTMAS TREES ARE SCATTERED ON A SOCIAL DISTANCING GRID AND ROTATING, AS IF THEY ARE ALSO HINTING US TO KEEP A DISTANCE FROM THEM. IN FACT, THE GEOMETRY OF THE TREES BORROWS THE SAME LANGUAGE OF THE FLOOR PATTERN AND TRANSFORMING A 2D PLANE INTO 3D CONE IN SPACE. THE LIGHTING AT ITS EDGE AND THE REFLECTIVE SURFACE ON THE FLOOR HAVE FURTHER ENRICH THIS INTO 4D EXPERIENCE. WHILE VISITORS WALKING INTO THIS SOCIAL DISTANCING CHRISTMAS JUNGLE, WON’T WE BE CONNECTED BY SEEING THIS LIGHTING SPECTACULAR?

WE DRAPE MORE THAN SIX KILOMETRES OF FABRIC ACROSS THE ATRIUM AND CENTRE BRIDGE OF CITYPLAZA. IN TOTAL, WE HAVE USED MORE THAN 12,000 SQFT CHIFFON RIBBON, HUNG 3,223
PIECES OF FABRIC IN 412 DIFFERENT LENGTHS AND 21 DIFFERENT COLOURS TO CREATE A COLOURFUL CAVE-LIKE LANDSCAPE FOR THE SPACE AND TRANSFORM THIS CONVENIENT PASSAGEWAY INTO A PLAYGROUND IN DIFFERENT COLOUR GRADIENTS FOR BOTH KIDS AND ADULTS.
