Welcome to Common Ground by William Menking

Now well into the second decade of the 21st century, the 13th International Architecture Exhibition, directed by David Chipperfield, confirms this as a recurring biannual event. An opportunity to take initial stock of the situation. The seven exhibitions held between 2000 and 2012 have marked a significant shift in strategy compared to the previous six editions from 1980 onwards. The architects have gradually adopted a more metaphorical approach while, at least going by the titles, the aim has been to promote a more socially-focused form of architecture. 10 Con la 13. Le sette Biennali dal 2000 al 2012 segnano un mutamento importante rispetto alle sei che le hanno precedute dal 1980 in poi. Il racconto dell’architettura diviene via via più metaforico, mentre le intenzioni appaiono, almeno dai titoli di scena, sempre più sociali. 11

Crossroads towards optimism Is this the ‘crisis’ Biennale? This Biennale is somewhat of a reconsideration of the role of architecture, and on its relationship in society. Its aim is to look into the future and encourage the public to increase their dialogue with architects and designers. Over the last few years there has been a long crisis in the quality of questions asked. In the past architects were at times asked to create objects and buildings solely with the aim of shocking a public that hadn’t known how to ask the right questions.
