About The Cover Mrs. Goldstein’s 9th grade theology class reflected on their recent faith journey essays outdoors, taking advantage of Archmere’s beautiful campus and the good weather. As they were thinking about St. Norbert as a pioneer and a visionary, they reflected on what it means to have vision. Mrs. Goldstein provided them with the words of Bishop Barron: “With the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God, we must change our attitude, our way of thinking, our perspective on things, the manner in which we see. We have to see the world differently and in light of that new vision; we have to change the way we act. Once we envision our own existence—and indeed the being of the entire universe—as the gift of a gracious God, we gladly resolve to give our lives away as a gift of love.”

When I have a new idea and decide to act on it, I am both excited and anxious at the same time—excited about trying something new and different and anxious about it being a successful experience in all the ways success might be measured. With those feelings in mind, what must Abbot Bernard H. Pennings, O.Praem., Abbot of Saint Norbert Abbey, have been thinking when he wrote to Bishop Edmond FitzMaurice of Wilmington on June 30, 1932, requesting to establish a new Catholic Norbertine school in Claymont, Delaware? From the aspirational vision for the Academy that he described in his letter, he seemed confident that this new ministerial venture would take root and grow - even during the Great Depression. In fact, he was so confident that he proposed the school to open just a little over two months from the date of the letter of request to the Bishop and that Archmere Academy would grow over the years to include a four-year college, as well as maintain a boarding and day school for boys in grades nine through twelve! To recruit students and assemble a faculty, let alone prepare the estate, formerly the home of the Raskobs, for classrooms, laboratories, dormitories, and athletic facilities, were all significant projects to be completed. And yet, on September 14, 1932, in the words of Robert F. Kelly ‘36 from the 1936 Patio yearbook, “Sixteen young boys stood together in the Archmere Patio, gazing intently at the magnificent skylight and the flags draped over the railings. As we stood there watching this, our attention was attracted to the marble stairway. Here we beheld Father McKeough, the Headmaster, approach us. After a friendly greeting, he directed us toward the chapel, where the first school year was appropriately inaugurated with Holy Mass. After Mass, we were ushered into the study hall, a large room adjacent to the chapel. Here we were welcomed by Father McKeough and the other faculty members and assigned to our classrooms. In our opening period, we were greeted by the towering figure of Father Steinmetz, a personality we will long remember. Once we had met our other teachers and obtained our books, it did not take long to settle down to classwork.” (p.24) In recent years, including this year we have celebrated our opening school Mass on September 14, which happens to be the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, to commemorate that special first day of school in 1932.

I often wonder what Father McKeough and all of the other faculty and staff members and alumni who have passed away over the years would think if they were to experience Archmere today. Through the years, Fr. Justin E. Diny, O.Praem. Archmere has evolved and changed, responding to the needs of the time and incorporating best practices in education. There have been significant changes, such as the move to co-education and the elimination of the boarding program in 1975, the expansion of the curriculum into the visual arts in 1971, and the performing arts in 1981. Buildings have been constructed and renovated, athletic fields added and refurbished, and learning spaces in and out of buildings created and expanded to meet the curricular and extracurricular needs of the students. We have moved through a variety 4

of day schedules and continually refine the content and delivery of our core curriculum and electives, from incorporating aeronautics in physics during the World War II years, installing desktop computers in a “computer lab” to teach WordPerfect and Lotus applications in the early 1980s, adopting a 1:1 laptop program in 2010, to experimenting with virtual learning environments and applications in these recent months of the pandemic.

Tradition While we have grown and changed as a school, we have maintained the rich Norbertine tradition that provides a strong values-based foundation for developing a caring and compassionate community. We continue celebrating the 900th Anniversary of the Norbertine Order, founded by Saint Norbert in 1120; on December 25, 1121, he and his first companions professed formal vows. On June 6, 2021, at the Feast of Saint Norbert, Pope Francis wrote a congratulatory letter to the Most

Reverend Jozef Wouters, Abbot General of the Premonstratensian Canons Regular (The Norbertines). As he concludes his letter, he writes, “Nine centuries later, we give thanks for the movement initiated by Saint Norbert who was able to draw lessons from existing, proven structures of monastic origin, but maintained the identity of the members of his Order as canons regular. During this period, many women also adhered to the Norbertine ideal, and still today, they essentially dedicate themselves to the contemplative life. Furthermore, many laypeople, while remaining in the world, join your communities according to various forms of affiliation. Thus, over the centuries, the Premonstartensian abbeys have developed an intense relationship with their territory because, from the beginning, many canons have dedicated themselves to the pastoral care of parishes. Consequently, the abbeys have not only been active in caring for and welcoming the poor but have developed and maintained contacts with people from all social classes. Thus, the inspiration of Saint Norbert remained alive and is still one of the riches of the universal Church.”

In addition, we want to be sure that the school maintains a focus on diversity in the years to come, maintaining “contacts with people from all social classes,” as Pope Francis remarks in his letter.

Resilience Since March of 2020, the faculty and staff of Archmere have gone “above and beyond” in transitioning very quickly to an effective virtual environment and adapting to a new day schedule and health safety protocols throughout the 2020-2021 school year. While the pandemic had an adverse impact on students’ learning and social and emotional development, the faculty and staff managed to provide a safe environment for in-person learning and social interaction for our students last year, reworking lesson plans, spending extra time monitoring scheduled activities, and contributing to the continuous discussion of best practices and applications for teaching and learning. The Board of Trustees of Archmere Academy wrote an open letter of thanks to the faculty and staff, which I am sharing with the entire Archmere community as a sidebar to this letter. This public affirmation and support of our work is gratefully acknowledged and is just another example of our strong sense of community. Support of Archmere extends beyond the work of the Board, faculty, and staff through the many gifts we receive from the members and friends of our Archmere community—true partners in our work. In this issue, we acknowledge all those who have contributed to the Archmere Fund and other fundraising initiatives during the last fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2021. Especially in the previous two years, we could not have provided the additional financial assistance requested by some of our families who have experienced financial hardship due to the pandemic without the generosity of our community.

Archmere, founded as an “abbey school,” I believe emulates some of the characteristics of a Norbertine community that Pope Francis describes. Just as Norbertines have maintained pastoral care of parishes over the centuries, so too have Norbertine faculty at Archmere ministered to many families over the years, celebrating baptisms, marriages, and funerals. Archmere has been viewed as an elite private school; however, there is a conscious effort to ensure that those students who are academically talented and fall 2021 • Archmere Academy

From the Board of Trustees on June 7, 2021: To the Archmere Faculty and Staff, As we, the Board of Trustees, have conducted our work this past year, we have witnessed countless examples of the care, compassion, excellence, and expertise you have each brought to your work at Archmere. We extend our gratitude and appreciation to each of you as the academic year comes to a close, mindful of the exceptional efforts repeated thousands of times that made the difference in students’ lives in classrooms, labs, studios, fields, courts, and performance spaces, whether they were in-person or virtual. We have each been moved by the stories that we have shared, by our individual experiences with our loved ones who were enrolled as students, and by our encounters with each of you. In every circumstance, we recalled your many talents shared in spite of overwhelming circumstances that we never would have imagined two years ago. Each of us feel called to our roles on the Board because of our own familiarity with and love for Archmere: its Norbertine heritage lived daily, its commitment to the pursuit of excellence in all endeavors it supports, and its humanity and integrity that are hallmarks of the Archmere experience. For all of us, the experience of the past year and a half prompted each of us to value even more Archmere’s importance in our lives as a harbinger of hope and opportunity. The students who you supported both inside and outside the classroom will never forget the experience of this time. We are indescribably grateful that their memories of this year will include the example, the guidance, and the experience that each of you provided them. As we meet today to close our final activity for the year as a Board, we suspect that our successors twenty, thirty, forty and more years from now will recall with fondness, gratitude, and affection all you provided for them in this time. And so, from each of us, thank you for your time, talent, dedication, and aspirations for Archmere and its students. Reading the Archmere history as it appeared in this year’s Commencement Program, we are each reminded of the Academy’s place alongside a century of events, and how history was experienced on campus by the faculty, staff, and students of each era. Thank you for making your mark on the students this and every year, leaving us to say how grateful we are for your work and how we hope your summer brings well-deserved renewal! I can recall former headmaster and mentor, Father Justin E. Diny, O.Praem. often say, “There is no job that is too small or insignificant. Everyone has a role that is important to the success of Archmere.” Similarly, as an accomplished fundraiser and businessperson, he would also say the same concerning philanthropy - no gift is too small or insignificant. Every gift, no matter the size, is important and appreciated. On behalf of the Archmere community, I am most grateful for every gift we have received in support of our important work.

Collaboration Working effectively through the pandemic is no small task that requires collaboration and communication from everyone. I am grateful for our thoughtful students and their supportive families who genuinely care about one another, and in doing so, have taken the measures necessary to keep Archmere’s campus an open, healthy, and safe environment. Though we have had unforeseen costs associated with mitigation strategies as a result of the virus, the intentionality of our students and families in following our health and safety guidelines has helped us to be as operationally efficient as possible, adding leverage to our fundraising efforts. G. K. Chesterton, in his book Saint Thomas Aquinas: The Dumb Ox, writes: “A saint may be any kind of man, with an additional quality that is at once unique and universal. We might even say that the one thing which separates a saint from ordinary men is his readiness to be one with ordinary men. In this sense, the ordinary must be understood in its native and noble meaning: which is connected with the word order. A saint is long past any desire for distinction. . .” Adam Grant, in his book, Think Again, which was assigned to all students, faculty, and staff for their summer reading writes about a custodian, Candice Walker, who was beloved by the cancer patients on the floor of the hospital where she worked. He describes how she reframed her job. In addition to ensuring the floor was pristine to protect patients with compromised immune systems, she supported them emotionally through small acts of kindness. Grant writes that when she was asked why she did all these things, she responded, “No, it’s not part of my job, but it’s part of me.” Grant points out with this example that “our identities are open systems, and so are our lives.” (p.243) I would add that in this example, Candice demonstrates saintly qualities that lead her to do little things each day for others. Chesterton’s description of a saintly person and Grant’s example of Candice resonate with me as I think about the many incredible men and women, religious and laypersons, who, in their own quiet, and you might say, “orderly” ways, have been consequential to the success of Archmere. The Academy has been richly blessed over the past 90 years. We look optimistically to the future with God’s help, and as we sing in our school alma mater, “ . . . with the guidance of Saint Norbert, our faith gleams true.”

Archmere Academy’s First Headmaster, Fr. McKeough By Rev. Joseph McLaughlin, O.Praem.

n June 29, 1932, Norbertine Father Michael McKeough, O.Praem., serving at Saint William Parish in Shelby, Montana, received a letter from Abbot Bernard Pennings, O.Praem. in West DePere, Wisconsin, appointing Father McKeough to be the first headmaster of Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware. After delaying several hours, Father McKeough responded by telegram at 6:30 PM: “Will do as you wish. Sounds great.” On June 30, 1932, Abbot Pennings wrote to Bishop Edmond J. FitzMaurice of Wilmington, “We have just made arrangements with Mr. John J. Raskob to purchase his estate in Claymont, Delaware. This deal aims to establish a Catholic High School for boys, boarding and day, and to develop in time also a four-year college department. For thirty years, we have been preparing for educational work by sending fathers to different universities, so that now we have several professors with the Doctor’s degree, others with the M.A. or B.A., who graduated from Catholic University. We feel confident that we can maintain a school of the highest standard which will be a credit to Catholic Education. Hereby I ask your Excellency the canonical permission to have our community established in your diocese.” Father McKeough was the perfect choice to head the new Archmere Academy. He was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on September 18, 1891, two years before the Norbertines arrived in Wisconsin from Berne Abbey in Holland. He attended Saint John’s Elementary School in Green Bay and West High School in Green Bay for 9th grade. In January of 1908, he transferred into 10th grade at Saint Norbert High School in West DePere. He attended Saint Norbert College from 1910 to 1914 and was ordained a priest on December 13, 1917. In July 1918, he entered the army as a chaplain. He began his studies at the Catholic University of America in September 1919, receiving an M.A. in 1920 and a Ph.D. in 1926. During those same years, he taught at Saint Norbert College, was chaplain at Saint Joseph’s Academy for Girls in Green Bay, and was Director of Camp Tivoli, a summer camp for boys run by the Norbertines. At Saint Norbert Abbey, Father McKeough also served as Master of Novices and as professor of philosophy. Father McKeough lived well the motto of the Norbertine Order: “Prepared for every good work,” all the while suffering from tuberculosis from 1921 to 1931.

In a letter to Abbot Pennings from Shelby on July 8, 1932, Father McKeough wrote, “When I received your first letter, the whole proposition took my breath away.” With his chronic lung problems Father McKeough no doubt had been short of breath. Still, shortly after writing his July 8 letter, Father McKeough drove from Shelby, Montana to West DePere, Wisconsin, a distance of 1,311 miles. Meanwhile, Bishop FitzMaurice of Wilmington visited his family in Ireland when Abbot Pennings’ June 30, 1932 letter arrived at the bishop’s office in Wilmington. Delaware. The letter was forwarded to Bishop FitzMaurice, and on August 1, 1932, Bishop FitzMaurice’s approval was received by Msgr. John J. Dougherty, Vicar General of the Diocese. Msgr. Dougherty called a meeting of the Diocesan Consultors at 2:00 PM that same day. The Consultors also approved Abbot Pennings’s ambitious plans for a Catholic high school and a future four-year college. Msgr. Dougherty concluded his August 1, 1932, letter to Abbot Pennings by saying, “I personally welcome you to Wilmington and wish you every success in your venture. If in any way I can serve you, I shall be pleased to lend a hand. Father McKeough arrived in Wilmington by train four days later and stayed at the Cathedral rectory with Msgr. Dougherty, until Monday, August 8, when he moved to Archmere, the Claymont estate of John and Helena Raskob. Father McKeough lost no time in getting started. He advertised the new Archmere Academy in the Wilmington newspapers on August 6. He recruited students, assembled faculty, established the Archmere Corporation, set up the curriculum, and readied The Patio and The Manor to meet the needs of the students.

On Wednesday, September 14, 1932, sixteen boys arrived at The Patio for the first time. None of them had ever been to Archmere before - for a shadow visit, open house, entrance exam, interview, scholars’ dinner, spring orientation, fall sports practice, buddy day, family barbecue. None of the boys had parents or siblings who had attended Archmere. The boys must have been filled with questions, anxieties, but also wonder.

Freshman Robert F. Kelly, ‘36, writing in his senior yearbook, had a vivid memory of his first morning at Archmere: “As we stood there watching ... our attention was attracted to the marble stairway. Here we beheld Father McKeough, the Headmaster, approach us. After a friendly greeting, he directed us toward the chapel, where the first school year was appropriately inaugurated with Holy Mass.” First impressions are lasting, and Father McKeough’s friendly greeting and fervent celebration of Mass made the first students conclude: “All are welcome in this place” - the words of the opening hymn we sang at Archmere’s Opening Mass on September 14, 2021. On September 14, 1932, the sixteen boys heard Father MCKeough read, “Christ Jesus, though He was in the form of God ...emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, ...humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:6-8), words the 515 current Archmere students heard at Mass this year on September 14. These words perfectly describe the life and ministry of Father McKeough. At Archmere, from 1932 to 1936, he was the Headmaster and taught Latin, Economics, and Religion. From 1936 to 1945, he was principal of Southeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia. From 1945 to 1951, he was an assistant professor of Education at the Catholic University in DC. In 1951 he returned to Saint Norbert College as a professor of Education, and from 1952 to 1957, he served as Dean of the college.

Father McKeough made his last visit to Archmere on Sunday, November 8, 1959, to give the Dedication Address at the Dedication of Saint Norbert Hall. True to his life of humble service, Father McKeough made no reference in his address to himself and his role in establishing Archmere Academy. His spirit is evident in the letter he wrote to Abbot Pennings on the evening of September 14, 1932: “We started this morning with sixteen boys ... I feel confident that we shall have twenty before long. This is a small proportion of the fifty we had hoped. However, considering everything, I am satisfied. We shall carry on the best we can this year and trust that we will survive until next year” - confidence, gratitude, hope, trust - words of reverence and wisdom (“Pietate et Scientia”). Every Advent Season long-time Archmere teacher and administrator John A. O’Meara (1948-1990) used to place on his bulletin board these words in red crayon about Jesus: “God cared for us so much that He sent the very best.” We can say that Abbot Pennings cared so much for the new Archmere Academy that he sent Father Michael McKeough—“the very best.” The Psalmist wrote, “Seventy is the sum of our years, and eighty for those who are strong” (Psalm 90:10). Father McKeough died of cancer on June 5, 1960, at age 68 - younger than 70 but stronger than 80, still guiding us in Year 90 with his invincible spirit: “Will do as you wish. Sounds great.”

Welcome to the New Board Members Ernest Addo, Ph.D. P ’22, ’24

Rt. Rev. Richard Antonucci, O.Praem.

Dr. Addo has over 15 years of experience in the Photovoltaic and Quality Assurance Industry. He currently works as the Technical and Quality Director for Colonial Metals in Elkton, MD. Dr. Addo has his Master’s of Science in Material Science & Engineering from Columbia University, and he earned his Doctorate in Material Science & Engineering from the University of Delaware. Not a stranger to academics, Dr. Addo also taught as an adjunct professor for Cecil College, Delaware Technical & Community College, and was a chemistry instructor at the Columbia University School of Engineering. He is married to Mildred and they have two children, Dylan ‘22 and Daphne ‘24, currently at Archmere.

Fr. Richard Antonucci, Abbot Emeritus of Daylesford Abbey, took an avid interest in studying mathematics. He worked as a high school mathematics teacher for 25 years at many schools, including Archmere Academy! Since 2000, he has served in many administrative roles on both the local and district levels, as well as administrative positions within the Norbertine Community at Daylesford Abbey. Now, he is happy to say that he is pursuing the goal of “graceful senescence,” which was one of a Norbertine brother’s goals many years ago. Fr. Antonucci loves education and leading students to become more developed in their educational experiences.

Rev. Arul Amalrai, O.Praem. Fr. S. Arul Amalraj, O. Praem joined the Norbertine community of Jamtara, India in 1979 and was ordained a priest on May 10th, 1990. Fr. Amalraj fulfilled his priestly ministry at various capacities in Norbertine communities all over India until 2011. For the last 10 years, he has resided in Daylesford Abbey doing Parish ministry. He currently serves as Affiliate Director & Novice Master at Daylesford Abbey, and as Parochial Vicar at St. Patrick’s Parish in Malvern, PA.

Jose Maceda, M.D. P ‘24, ‘25 PP ‘20 Dr. Maceda is a native of Buffalo, New York, who attended Catholic schools through high school. A graduate of the University of Rochester, his medical education included experiences in Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Indianapolis before returning to the suburbs of Philadelphia. He is married to Lee Maceda, with whom they have four wonderful children: Emily ’20, Isabella ’24, Daniel ’25, and Juliana, who currently attends Ursuline Middle School. Jose is a practicing urogynecologist who started the urogynecologic division at Crozer Chester Hospital. He has enjoyed watching his two daughters thrive at Archmere. He appreciates the Archmere ethos displayed in providing young men and women a place, an environment, where they can be the best version of themselves. fall 2021 • Archmere Academy

Faculty and Staff News & Updates

Art & Design Department Chair Stephanie Silverman ’00 earned a Certificate in School Management and Leadership (CSML), a multi-course certificate program for PreK-12 school leaders. Bridging the fields of business and education, the program is an innovative collaboration between the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and Harvard Business School (HBS) and integrates expertise in managing teams and organizations with best practices in school and instructional leadership to provide school leaders with frameworks, skills, and knowledge to effectively lead and drive change improvement in schools.

Archmere English Teacher Steve Klinge Helps Write American Lit & Rhetoric Textbook

Francesca Pileggi ‘06 received a grant from the Pennsylvania Care Partnership through the PA Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to develop peer support training for students. The training, which equips students with basic helping skills and knowledge to assist peers who are struggling emotionally, will be launched at Archmere this fall and available to any interested school free of charge. Francesca also worked with Penn State PRO Wellness, who received a grant from the Hollister Confidence Fund, to research her mental health and suicide prevention curriculum, which has been a part of Archmere’s health curriculum for the past five years. Ms. Pileggi was also recently recognized by Delaware Today Magazine as one of Delaware’s Top Teachers!

Christopher Boehm and Catherine Reigner will again be heading to the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) Annual Conference this year. During the conference, both Mr. Boehm and Mrs. Reigner will be busy networking, attending educational sessions, and more! Mr. Boehm will be presenting a session entitled, “We’re All In the Same Sandbox -- Mutual Benefits of Reverse Advisory Boards” to share about Archmere’s very successful Advisory Board. This session will help other high schools consider the benefit of having our college partners on an advisory board and how it has helped Archmere’s College Counseling team better serve our Auks during their college process. Each year, NACAC recognizes innovative new programs with the Rising Star Award and this year, the Pennsylvania Association for College Admission Counseling (PACAC) is being awarded the Rising Star for their Promoting Inclusivity & Equity Webinar Series. This series was put on by PACAC’s Professional Development Committee and DE&I subcommittee that Mrs. Reigner serves as the chair for. In addition to coordinating the series and working with over 25 professionals within PACAC to create the series, Mrs. Reigner also served as a presenter for the first webinar in the series.

Archmere English Teacher Steve Klinge was recently a featured author in the Teacher’s Edition of the American Lit & Rhetoric textbook. He edited and wrote many of the headnotes and bio blurbs throughout the book, as well as the teacher annotations for Chapter 5, Redefining America. Steve’s name appears as a featured author on the book cover, and his bio can be found on the inside cover. Leah Davidson-Wolf earned a graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second or Other Language from University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). TESOL certificate programs are designed provide classroom teachers with the skills and knowledge to assist students who are English Language Learners with subject-specific language acquisition and American culture. The program requires teachers to take classes focuses on various aspects of instruction including grammar, assessment, and cultural norms of students from different backgrounds.

Welcome to New Faculty Members Alima Bucciantini • History Alima Bucciantini grew up in small-town Maine. She attended Mount Holyoke College, then went off to graduate school at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. After some time teaching there and working with the National Museum of Scotland, she returned to the U.S. to take jobs first as an Assistant Professor of Museum Studies at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, then at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. However, she wanted to connect to students’ academic journey—and a few fewer meetings to attend—so she switched over to high school teaching in 2019. After a few years at The Tatnall School, Dr. Bucciantini is very excited to bring her passion for European History, the weird stories of museum objects, and how to be well prepared for college to Archmere.

Catie Chinn • Mathematics Catie Chinn is a lifelong Delawarean who grew up in Newark and received her Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Mathematics Education with a minor in Educational Studies from the University of Delaware. She has a deep appreciation for Catholic schooling, having attended Holy Angels and Saint Mark’s. Catholic education made her fall in love with learning and wants to share that love with her students. Mrs. Chinn is so excited to teach at Archmere because of the school’s commitment to focusing on academic excellence and cultivating a caring and welcoming environment for both students and faculty. She looks forward to sharing her passion for mathematics with her students.

James Clark • Athletic Trainer James Clark III grew up in Randallstown, Maryland, and attended Kenwood High School, where he was a member of the Sports Science Academy Magnet Program. He learned about various sports medicine-related careers, including athletic training. Mr. Clark also played football and lacrosse at Kenwood, developing a growing interest in helping athletes perform at their best. James then attended Neumann University in Aston, Pennsylvania to major in Athletic Training while playing lacrosse. Archmere was the last clinical rotation site of his senior spring semester in 2020 but was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following this, James graduated and returned home to work as an athletic trainer in Baltimore county, but is now elated to be back a year later to be an official member of the Archmere community.

Lisa Goldstein • Theology Lisa Goldstein grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and earned her Bachelor’s Degrees in Political Science and Philosophy, and minored in Theology with a Secondary Education emphasis in Religion at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg. From there, she earned her Master’s Degree at Catholic University of America. During graduate school, Lisa worked for Catholic Charities, interned on Capitol Hill, and coordinated a child abuse prevention program. Next, she began teaching for Huntington Learning Center, eventually becoming the Education Director, which led her to pursue Maryland State Teacher Certification in Special Education. She currently lives with her husband, two sons, parrot, and dog in Landenberg, PA. She is very active in parish life and ministry at her church and is enjoying the opportunity to teach Theology here in the wonderful community of Archmere.

Frederick Okocha • Physics Frederick Okocha was born in Lagos, Nigeria, the youngest of four siblings. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Delta State University, Nigeria, and his Master’s Degree in Petroleum Geophysics from Imperial College, London. Mr. Okocha did not start his professional career as a teacher. He worked in the oil energy industry for eight years before transitioning to teaching. He taught Physics at College in Nigeria and was a Math and Physics teacher at Padua Academy. Mr. Okocha loves to travel and enjoy the uniqueness of every culture. He also plays chess, although with the pandemic, has gotten used to playing online now. Also, as a soccer fan, he loves to watch the English Premier League and other European leagues. 14

Nick Sanna ‘98 • Assistant Athletic Director Nick Sanna is happy to return to the school that helped shaped the person he is today. He received his undergrad from LaSalle University, where he double-majored in secondary education and Spanish with a minor in history and earned his Master’s degree from Wilmington University in educational leadership. For the last 19 years, Mr. Sanna taught at St. Mark’s High School, coaching basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the Archmere Sports Hall Of Fame in 2016 and was named the Delaware State Basketball Coach of the Year in 2018. In addition to serving as Assistant Athletic Director, Mr. Sanna will be teaching Spanish and helping with alumni relations. He is also the varsity baseball coach and will be helping out in the basketball program as well.

Rachel Van Wylen • Art Rachel Van Wylen comes to Archmere from The White Mountain School in New Hampshire where she was the Chair of the Fine and Performing Arts. She will be teaching Introduction to Drawing, Mixed Media, and Illustration, and is delighted to be joining a collaborative, award-winning department. A graduate of Gordon College and The New York Academy of Art, Rachel is a practicing artist who regularly exhibits her work in galleries and museums. However, her true home is the classroom, and she looks forward to sharing her love of drawing, painting, and the creative process with a new group of students.

Lauren Walton • Learning Specialist After earning a degree in Business Administration from SUNY Geneseo, Lauren began her career in business. Although she spent four rewarding years working in Fortune 500 companies, she decided to be adventurous and indulge an interest in international travel that had blossomed when she studied abroad at Oxford University as an undergraduate. Lauren bought a one-way ticket to Greece in 2007, where she earned a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to teach English overseas. Lauren taught in China and South Korea for several years before returning to the U.S. to earn a graduate degree in education from The University of Pennsylvania. She has been an ESL (English as a Second Language) Director, AP teacher, Director of College Counseling, and Reading/Learning Specialist at independent and charter schools in Buffalo, NY, and the greater Philadelphia area for over a decade. Ms. Walton developed an interest in MBE (Mind, Brain, Education) science and will delightedly talk your ear off about educational neuroscience and socialemotional learning. She is thrilled to be joining the Archmere community and bringing a wealth of knowledge and curiosity about research-based, innovative educational practices to empower students with effective learning strategies that help them develop self-efficacy.

Introducing The Helena Raskob Arts Institute at Archmere

The Patio at Archmere is the home of The Helena Raskob Arts Institute. Founded in 2021, the purpose of the Institute is to educate members of the Archmere community and greater local, regional, and national communities in music and the fine arts, in a historic setting that is in itself a rich subject for learning, preservation, and restoration. Led by Mary Ellen Schauber, the Arts Institute encompasses several groups, each with specific objectives and interests, but all related to the preservation and understanding of music and the fine arts.

Friends of the Patio and The Helena Springer Green Raskob Concert and Lecture Series Established in 2011, The Helena Springer Green Raskob Concert and Lecture Series began first, as a venue for musical performances by local and regional talent and student groups. In 2018, it evolved to include lectures on aspects of the Patio, as more in-depth research began about the estate, which is presented in a book, written by a former faculty member, Thomas Manerchia ‘61. During the pandemic, virtual tours of the home were produced, and it is anticipated that these well-watched programs will continue. Funds from sponsorships and ticket sales help offset the expenses of the programming, with the remaining proceeds supporting the Stanley Praiss ‘57 Memorial Restoration Fund. Two signature annual events of the Series are the Mastersingers Alumni Christmas Concert in December and a recital of musically advanced Archmere students taking private lessons.

The Archmere Academy Organ Society In 2014, Archmere Academy received a gift of a historic 1913 Kimball Theater Organ. The console was originally installed in the State Theater in Philadelphia and traveled to several other places before being installed in the John Wanamaker Department Store in Philadelphia where it was used for two years, while the main console was being refurbished. A gift of Mark and Carol Dresden who restored and modernized the organ, arranged through philanthropist, Bill Church, the organ has been installed and expanded with additional ranks (pipes) and a second classical console over the last six years. All of the labor and materials have been donated through the benefactions of Bill Church and other local organ enthusiasts. The Organ Society was formed in 2019 to ensure the maintenance of the organ, as well as to insure its regular use for concert work and organ study. The organ debut is planned for Spring, 2022.

Music Studios Beginning in September 2021, the Institute offers individual music lessons to Archmere students on campus in the Patio. Lessons are offered in piano, voice, and organ. For students with a specific interest in other instrumental lessons, the institute director will work to identify a teacher who might be available to join the studio at Archmere. Teachers invited to work with the institute are established teaching artists in the community, and university students developing private teaching studios. Students arrange lesson times and fees directly with teachers. The director schedules the days and times available for each teacher coming to The Patio, and assigns the rooms and spaces to be used for each lesson. The studio program includes a chamber music element, enabling orchestra students to have an on-campus opportunity to develop chamber music skills through The Institute. Interested students already taking lessons in strings, woodwinds, and brass instruments will receive coaching for various chamber ensembles and be offered performance opportunities at Archmere. Private music lessons in piano and voice are currently available. Lessons in organ, given on the historic organ in The Patio, as well as lessons in other instruments, may be available upon request. Archmere TEAMS Place First in Delaware, Third and Fifth Nationally Archmere students took home first place for this year’s Delaware State Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) competition. The goal of TEAMS is to have students work collaboratively to develop practical and creative solutions to real world engineering problems. High school teams that rank 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the Best in State rankings or that achieve a minimum combined score are eligible to compete in the national TEAMS competitions. Prior to the competition, each team researched and wrote an essay on how the use of robotics could be expanded to address the imbalance of supply and demand as a result of the pandemic. During the competition, each team took a test on this topic, and then in the design build challenge they created a solution to the challenge using common household items. 9/10 Grade Level: Congratulations to the 9/10 Team B for 1st place in Delaware and Team A for 2nd place. Abby Garcia, Helen Qi Invited to Delaware Governor’s School for Arts Congratulations Class of 2023 students Abby Garcia and Helen Qi for earning spots in this past summer’s prestigious Governor’s School for Excellence for the Visual Arts. The Delaware Governor’s School for Excellence is a weeklong summer Abby Garcia program that brings together academically and artistically talented Delaware high school students who have completed their sophomore year. Abby and Helen Qi Helen engaged in the visual and performing arts program, which provides tutorial instruction with a noted artist and culminates in a performance or public display of the students’ work. Students are nominated to participate in Governor’s School through their schools via a competitive application process.

Margaret Atkins ‘21 Named Winner of Annual Beau Biden Memorial Scholarship Archmere graduate Margaret Atkins received the annual Beau Biden Memorial Scholarship. Named in honor of former Delaware Attorney General and Archmere graduate Beau Biden, who passed away in 2015 at age 46, the scholarship was established by the I Could Do Great Things Foundation, an independent Delaware-based philanthropy. The scholarship honors college-bound high school seniors from Delaware “who embody the virtues of Beau Biden, who exhibit qualities of leadership, community, civility, respect, and a strong moral compass. Margaret’s innate ingenuity, compassion, and leadership fueled her desire to help those impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak through skills she obtained in her Digital Design class at Archmere. Margaret’s efforts led to the founding of a network of local 3D printers to provide over 600 PPEs to health care facilities in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Florida, at a time when there was an extreme shortage of protective equipment. As a National Honor Society Officer, representative at the National Student Council Leadership Conference, and TEAMS Engineering Club member, Margaret has always been dedicated to academic success. One of her teachers remembers Margaret as a “high achiever” who applied her “logical and analytical approach” to all challenges, a method that undoubtedly will lead Margaret to more great things in her future at Dartmouth. 18

Ten Archmere Seniors Named St. Francis de Sales Award Winners The Diocese of Wilmington St. Francis de Sales Awards Convocation for Catholic High School Seniors recognizes students for “excellence in faith development, scholarship, service, leadership and citizenship”. In addition, the Archmere Science Department selects two juniors for science awards. The first award is called the Rensselaer Medal. It is awarded to a student that has excelled in math and science in the class and extracurricularly. It includes a scholarship to Rensselaer Tech. Nick Zhu ‘22 was also selected as last year’s recipient. The second award is the Bausch and Lomb Science Award. The Award qualifies the student for a scholarship program at the University of Rochester. It is awarded to a student that has excelled in science in the classroom and extracurricularly. Each Spring, the Diocese of Wilmington sponsors the St. Francis de Sales Awards Convocation to recognize outstanding Catholic school seniors of the Catholic secondary schools in the Diocese of Wilmington. Ten senior students from each of the eight Catholic secondary schools were recognized at the event.

Archmere spearheads a global visual art collaboration, celebrating 900 Years of Prémontré Students from each Norbertine School throughout the globe were invited to create a small visual representation inspired by the life of Saint Norbert, to celebrate the 900th Anniversary of the Order of Prémontré. Archmere received over 200 submissions of original art from students grades 5-college level. Each artwork measured 6” x 6” square and can be created on any paper or two-dimensional surface, including cardboard, poster board, computer paper, recycled materials such as brown paper bags, or whatever is available. The Designs can be in color or black and white, and they can be works of digital art or digital photography, or created using traditional studio materials such as paint, pencils, markers, collage, and mixed media The only requirement is that they connect in some way to Saint Norbert or are inspired by his life, legacy, and enduring impact. Once all submissions have been received, a large “art mural” will be assembled digitally at Archmere Academy in Claymont, DE. The mural will be printed and duplicated, and then each participating school will receive a Phototex print reproduction of the entire collaborative project for permanent or temporary display in the school to celebrate the 900th Jubilee of Prémontré. So far, submissions have been contributed by St. Norbert College in Australia, Norbertus Gymnasium in Magdeburg, Germany, and St. Norbert College in Hungary. fall 2021 • Archmere Academy

One Hundred and Eleven Archmere Academy Students Earn AP Scholar Awards The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both, for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 27% of the more than 2.64 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams: Alexis Rendel from the Class of 2021 met all eligibility requirements and was awarded The AP International Diploma (APID), a globally recognized certificate awarded to students who display exceptional achievement across a variety of disciplines. Available to international students attending secondary schools outside the U.S. and to U.S. high school students applying to universities outside the country, the APID certifies outstanding academic excellence with a global perspective. The requirements to qualify for this award are receiving scores of 3 or higher on 5 or more AP Exams across 3 content areas in Languages, in global perspective, and in sciences or math and computer science. Spring Athletes, Teams Earn Conference and All-State Awards Congratulations to all of our spring athletes who were named to the Diamond State All-Conference teams and the All-State teams. Archmere accolades also included the Diamond State Athletic Conference Championship title for boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, girls soccer, golf and the Archmere baseball team. In addition, the rugby team defeated Salesianum to once again bring home the State 7’s Championship Cup.

The boys lacrosse team won the Sportsmanship Award for the conference and made it all the way to the Semifinals of the State Tournament before falling to championship team Salesianum. Archmere teacher Kyle Bardeer was named the Girls Soccer Coach of the Year and led the team to an impressive 10-2 season and third seed in the State Tournament. Erin Solda was named the Girls Lacrosse Coach of the Year for the Diamond State Athletic Conference and led her team to the Quarterfinals. Individually, freshman Andy Zhu took home the First Singles State Tennis Championship and freshman Jane Willin won the State Championship for High Jump in track and field.

Archmere freshman Andy Zhu went 6-2, 6-2 to take the First Singles Tennis State Championship against Charles Sternberg of Sanford on May 27th at St. Andrew’s School. Andy, seeded third, won first singles going 4-0 in the State Tournament and 11-0 during the season. He defeated the 1st and 2nd seed on his way to the Championship. Andy didn’t face the #1 seed Charles Sternberg this season, but the two have played before. Andy was able to break the serve of the Sanford’s standout seven times in his 6-2, 6-2 victory. “I’m doing it for my school, and it’s a big title,” said Zhu. I couldn’t have done it without my team and my coaches, Mike Hamilton and Steve LaPerle, and also my parents. It feels amazing.”

Reimagining Learning Support By Lauren Walton, Learning Specialist

s scientific advances help us better understand the brain and cognitive processes, those insights can help educators develop more effective practices in the classroom and explicitly teach students how to learn. The interdisciplinary field of MBE (Mind, Brain, Education) science blends neuroscience, psychology, and educational pedagogy in ways that encourage innovative, research-based teaching and learning practices that empower students to develop self-efficacy (confidence in their ability to learn and do challenging things). Self-efficacy is not false confidence; it is based on experiences of authentic accomplishment that are rooted in the ability to seek feedback and grow through mistakes (“fail forward” as the modern terminology goes) to cultivate metacognitive awareness (the ability to describe and evaluate one’s mental processes and knowledge gaps). Archmere is working to harness the power of these insights. In the interests of serving our students and preparing them for lives of principle and purpose outside of the classroom, Archmere is reimagining learning support in subtle ways that we hope will have a significant impact.

Learning support is for everybody. There’s been a longstanding misperception that the only students who have learning differences or struggle academically can benefit from learning support. We want to challenge this assumption. Neuroscience findings indicate intelligence is not a fixed trait; we can grow our intelligence through deliberate practice in stimulating, structured environments. Since learning is essentially based on the formation of new neural connections (neuroplasticity) and new neurons (neurogenesis), it’s important for schools - and students/families - to create conditions where those two processes are maximized. All people can benefit from a better understanding of how brains learn (in a general sense and on an individual basis) and how to mindfully structure institutions and habits to facilitate that process. By framing intelligence this way and addressing skill deficits that have nothing to do with intelligence but often get in the way of demonstrating it (e.g., lack of executive functioning skills), we also better address equity issues in education.

Mindsets are powerful. The research of Carol S. Dweck and Angela Duckworth about growth mindset and the role of grit/perseverance has been applied in various ways to educational practice for over a decade. Growth mindset is essentially the understanding that many attributes we used to consider innate “traits” are malleable; However, understanding growth mindset on an intellectual level and putting it meaningfully into practice are two entirely different things. Schools play a pivotal role in helping students develop the tools to use growth mindset thinking to their advantage. Growth mindset can be misinterpreted to overemphasize effort; it’s not just about working hard—it’s also about working strategically, so you get more “bang for your buck,” as it were. Students can feel let down by the promises of a growth mindset if they are employing less effective study tools or their expectations for the speed of their growth/ learning are not realistic. On the other hand, a growth mindset has tremendous potential to empower students and make them more comfortable with imperfection, so explicit metacognition and growth mindset thinking is key.

A holistic approach to students best supports learning. The intuition of master educators—that a student’s emotional, physical, and mental health are closely linked to academic performance and cognitive capacity—is increasingly validated by research. In addition, strong positive mentoring relationships and supporting students’ social-emotional growth are pivotal to maximizing their ability to reach their full potential in classrooms. Consequently, Archmere’s Learning Support program is closely aligned with the counseling program to ensure that each student’s wellbeing is fully supported.

It’s important to destigmatize neurodiversity. Until relatively recently, learning differences resulting from divergent cognitive processes were historically not well understood and were often stigmatized. Research and neuroimaging have demystified many learning differences for experts. However, stigma often persists among the general population, especially since science is constantly evolving, and there are still many unanswered questions. Neurotypical people may have limited points of reference to empathize with students who have learning differences, and they can erroneously associate difference with deficiency. Even the terminology associated with learning differences (e.g., referring to them as “disabilities”) can reinforce biases. Changing the words we use is the first step in shifting away from the paradigm of neurodiversity as a reflection of limited potential and empowering neurodiverse students to understand themselves and advocate for inclusivity and understanding in all of the institutions they are a part of now and in the future. It’s important to note, however, that the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) does protect the rights of individuals who fall into 13 different disability categories. In order for those people to be properly identified and protected, it’s necessary to use the verbiage in the ADA and in various diagnostic manuals, so the term “disability” is still in use. Ultimately, the goal is to shift our mindsets toward a more affirming connotation while still ensuring that the necessary supports are in place for neurodiverse students.

We want to prioritize self-advocacy and self-awareness. Part of a well-rounded education is the development of metacognitive awareness and the language to self-advocate. As students move into higher education and the professional world, it’s important for them to understand what they need to succeed and be solution-oriented and initiate conversations with the right people to ensure their needs are met to the extent possible in each context. This involves a complex skill set that synthesizes self-awareness, tact, knowledge of systems/mechanisms for institutional change, and flexible thinking if all possible accommodations are not available (or not available immediately). These skills can be taught if they are properly scaffolded, and space is created for students to practice them. fall 2021 • Archmere Academy

A New Focus on Student Wellness

rchmere is widely recognized for its academic excellence and ability to cultivate intellectual creativity through its rigorous academic program. However, during my semesterly meetings with students, I repeatedly hear a different response when I ask students their favorite thing about Archmere. During these meetings, the word community comes up so often; it’s no surprise it’s one of Archmere’s core values.

The Nest provides a variety of student-focused, datadriven programming to nurture students’ overall physical, social, and emotional wellbeing and provide a place for students to recharge and gain coping strategies.

I believe that connection is a large part of what enables students to succeed in their academic pursuits. Small class sizes, devoted faculty, and supportive peers contribute to an Archmere community unlike any other. Yet, to me, Archmere is so much more than the exceptional academic learning within its classrooms. It’s the students who help their classmates on crutches without being asked. It’s the invested teachers who genuinely care about their students’ success both on and off-campus. It’s the senior who sits with the ninth-grader eating lunch alone on the first day of school.

This year, I am excited and grateful to have an opportunity to deliberately enrich the connections and resources that already exist within this robust community through The Nest. Learning and growing cannot adequately occur when students are not physically and emotionally healthy. As a college preparatory institution, we also recognize that transitioning to college involves more than just academic preparedness. We are invested in our students’ overall well-being. We want them to be the best scholars and the best artists, athletes, sons/daughters, musicians, siblings, friends, and human beings they can be. The idea for The Nest was born out of a conversation between Archmere principal Katie Thiel and me about Archmere’s commitment to student wellness. We wanted to develop a program that intentionally invested in students’ physical, social, and emotional well-being through various avenues. 26

I was inspired by a phrase seniors display on posters as they enthusiastically welcome new students at Orientation: “Welcome to the nest.” As Auks, we passionately welcome new students to the nest, where we hope they will gain knowledge and skills, develop their gifts and talents, and grow into empathetic leaders prepared for every good work. The Nest serves as both a metaphor and an acronym. I envision a nest as a safe place that provides the nourishment needed for growth and development. As an acronym, NEST also represents our objective: nurturing every student to thrive. When students leave our nest after four short years, I hope that they have the academic and social, emotional, and physical skills they need to truly thrive in adulthood.

Adolescence represents an important time of transition and growth, so I am thrilled and thankful to develop and implement this added layer of support for our students. I hope that Archmere and the Nest have a significant positive impact that our students will carry into their bright futures.

Components of The Nest include: • Completion of the Centers for Disease Control’s National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which will provide insight into student engagement in health-related behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth • A comprehensive Health curriculum for ninth and tenth-grade students that integrates subject matter experts in different health fields • A “Supporting Your Student” parent workshop series that provides parents with information, skills, and strategies to support their children’s social, emotional, and physical wellbeing • A resource library developed with the assistance of the subject matter experts who contribute to the health curriculum • Connectedness efforts that intentionally forge connection among members of the Archmere community • An Orientation 2.0 activity period that assists ninth-grade students in their adjustment to Archmere by providing regular opportunities for mentorship from upperclassmen, social interaction, and skill development during the first semester • The development of a team of Aevidum Ambassadors, trained peer support students who are prepared to assist struggling students and guide them to adult support, and who will provide student voice for The Nest programming fall 2021 • Archmere Academy

Report on the State of Institutional Advancement How the Archmere Community Stepped up to Support our Students During the Pandemic As a member of the Archmere community, I am incredibly proud of what our school was able to do for all of our students last school year. Despite the very significant challenges and uncertainties imposed by the pandemic, our students were able to attend classes in person five days a week safely. During the brief periods when it was prudent for our students to learn from home, they could still interact live with their teachers and classmates using a sophisticated virtual platform. And despite limitations imposed by the pandemic, our students were able to participate in robust extracurricular activities, including full sports seasons, choral and instrumental concerts, plays, community service activities, the Kairos retreat, and even proms—which are critical to their social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

generosity enabled us to raise $550,298 for the annual Archmere Fund—exceeding our goal of $500,000 and, more importantly, ensuring that we could meet the school’s increased operational expenses and our students’ additional financial aid needs. During Challenge Week alone, 256 of you stepped up and donated over $142,000 to the Archmere Fund! We extend special thanks to the very generous anonymous donors who provided matching gifts to drive the success of Challenge Week. We also want to recognize our Board of Trustees. In addition to the time and professional expertise and guidance they provide throughout the year to ensure the success of Archmere, every Trustee made a personal donation to the hArchmere Fund. Through the generosity of our donors, we were also able to grow the endowment last year by $606,887, helping secure the long-term financial health of Archmere Academy and ensuring we can continue to provide scholarships and financial aid to future students. As you review the details in the following pages about the many donors who supported Archmere last year, I hope you share my pride in being part of a community that stepped up and shared their resources to help our students during a very challenging year.

While all of this was happening at Archmere, many of our families were also directly impacted by the pandemic. Along with the personal hardships and incredible emotional toll we all suffered, many of our families experienced changed economic situations. All of our students were able to stay at Archmere, however, because of the support of so many. The Archmere community can feel proud that we were able to support our fellow Auks in so many ways.

We are also incredibly grateful to the many volunteers who shared their time and their creativity last year by raising funds and helping our school community feel connected, despite the limitations of the pandemic. The Mothers’ Guild, the Fathers’ Club, and the Alumni Association held several in-person events when it was possible, such as the annual Golf and Tennis Outing, the Senior Fashion Show, an after-prom event for seniors and faculty appreciation lunches. They also helped keep our community members engaged and connected in innovative new ways, such as installing the “Spirit Rock” on campus for our student artists to decorate, providing family portrait opportunities in the Patio, hosting a virtual wine tasting, and “Auking” senior class members at their homes with yard signs. Despite all the things that could not happen in person, our parent clubs raised over $45,000, and our Alumni Association raised over $20,000 for Archmere. Their creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm on behalf of our students have been truly inspirational.

Archmere’s success last year was made possible by the tireless efforts of the Archmere faculty and staff. While their efforts were herculean, they would not have been able to do what they did for our students without help from the entire Archmere Community.

The Miller-Wood Diversity Scholarship Fund Past parents and current grandparents Joe Miller and Rachel Wood have long known the value of an Archmere education. They established a scholarship as a result of their own experience with the Academy. “We started our endowed scholarship and included it in our estate plans because we both believe in Archmere, and because we see how well the school has prepared our girls (Kristin Miller ’86, Allyson Andrisani ’88, Sarah Gawthrop ’95) and grandchildren (Alex Willin ’13 and current student Jane Willin ’24) for an increasingly complex world. The scholarship is a way to ensure that others have access to the same benefits of an Archmere education. It is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for having made such a positive influence on our own family. “We have both been involved in education and know the importance of having the kind of learning experiences that are available at Archmere. In a changing world, our kids have been prepared in multiple ways. They have benefited from strong programs in English, history, mathematics, science, foreign language, athletics, music, art, and of course, all of this in a setting where their spiritual lives were challenged to grow and mature, as well. Archmere is invested in the kids, helping them to excel not only academically but as individuals. “Simply put, we just believe in Archmere and want to ensure that others have the opportunity to attend. The scholarship fund is a way to make that happen.” Archmere is grateful for the support and friendship of Rachel and Joe and for their important legacy gift. Dr. Joseph Miller is retired as the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Corning, Inc., and previously worked as the Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President for Research & Development at E.I. DuPont de Nemours, Inc. Long-time educator Rachel Wood directed the Science Resource Center, a consortium created by the state of Delaware, school districts and area corporations to support the K-12 science program. In Corning, NY, she was a founder of the Alternative School for Math and Science, helping to implement an inquiry-based science program in local public schools.

There are several ways to support the scholarship and financial aid program at Archmere General Scholarship Fund—Contribute to an existing named or general fund that distributes scholarship money to students. Individual Scholarship—Give a one-time scholarship gift to be awarded for student aid. Individual or Family Scholarship Endowment—Contribute a minimum of $20,000 (all at once, or over a period of up to five years), and the interest will fund the scholarship award each year, in perpetuity. Endowed scholarships may be named for the donor, or may be named to honor or memorialize parents, children, siblings, spouses, or faculty. Founder Society Recently Established Endowed Scholarships The John ’78 and Alyce Cunningham Scholarship Fund was established in recognition of an important birthday celebration for alumnus John. Grateful for his own experience at Archmere, the scholarship will make it possible for future students to attend Archmere. The John X. Denney, Jr. ’63 Scholarship Fund was established to honor the significant impact which Archmere and the Archmere family—classmates, parents, priests, and faculty—had on John (Jack) and his wife and children, and which was made possible by a scholarship that he received. He is eager for support from his scholarship to allow future students to join the Archmere family. Founder Society member Francis J. Hickman ’64 recently established the Hickman Family Scholarship Fund in honor of his parents, James J. Hickman, Sr. and Thelma C. Hickman. The scholarship will support tuition and/or other student financial expenses as needed. After the recent loss of his father, David T. Zakielarz ’89, with support from his family and friends, established the Joseph J. Zakielarz III Scholarship Fund to honor his memory. Dave and his family are grateful for the outpouring of support for this fund, and look forward to helping future generations of Archmere students through the scholarship. Alumni News Megan Healy Corey ‘02 and husband Jeff welcomed a baby boy, Holden Jeffrey, on June 1, 2021. He weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces, measuring 20 inches in length.

Nicole Rummel ‘09 is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Kentucky, where she officially became a candidate for her PhD in April of 2020. She studies the progression of glioblastoma and recently published two papers in scientific journals. Read more about Nicole’s paper, Altered Metabolism in Alzheimer Disease Brain: Role of Oxidative Stress.

Shreyas Parab ‘18 was elected Senior Class President at Stanford University. His duties include organizing events, collaborating with school administrators, and influencing university policy. Shreyas also serves as a Student Representative on the Board of Trustees Development Committee.

James “Chip” Byers ‘10 was appointed by Governor DeSantis to serve as the first Autistic Director of the Florida Endowment Foundation for Vocational Rehabilitation (Able Trust). Joseph R. Creekmore ‘11 married Tara M. Rodack on July 2, 2021 at Saint Patrick Church, Woodbury, New Jersey. JR’s brother, Benjamin ‘14, was Best Man. In the wedding party were Archmere teachers Mark Hannigan and Kristen Witte. Also Archmere teachers, JR teaches Chemistry and Physics and Tara teaches US History and AP Government. They met as Archmere swimming coaches. Father Joseph McLaughlin, O.Praem. officiated at the Nuptial Mass. Jane Crifasi Ayers ‘05 and husband Paul welcomed Annabel Joan on February 11, 2021. Jane, Paul, Rosie and Annabel reside in Croydon, an outer borough of London, England. Brittany Boyens ‘06 married her longtime beau Daniel DegliObizzi on May 28, 2021 at Winterthur Estate & Gardens. The wedding party included her twin sister and Maid of Honor, Brianna Boyens ’06, and bridesmaid, Ashley Murphy ’06. The newlyweds honeymooned in Nantucket and now reside near Rockford Park in Wilmington with their Jack Russell Terrier Rocky. 38

Danny Rogers ‘20 placed second in the South Jersey Lifeguard Championship Doubles Row this summer. Nearly one half hour later, Danny became the first Sea Isle CIty lifeguard to ever win a South Jersey singles title, by placing first in the Singles Row competition.

Alumni Spotlight: Auks Saving Lives Tori Falasco ‘16 recently attained a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Thomas Jefferson University. The values of discipline and empathy fostered at Archmere helped her to work within a dynamic, evolving healthcare environment in her clinical rotations during the pandemic. She is now a board certified physician assistant beginning her professional career in San Diego, CA. Lilly Quinn ‘17 learned to think more critically and with more compassion while at Archmere. She recently completed her nursing degree from Thomas Jefferson University. During her time at TJU, Lilly worked during the pandemic as a Nurse Extern at both Bryn Mawr Hospital in the Operating Room and PACU, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital on an Orthopedic Surgery Unit. Lilly recently accepted a position as a Registered Nurse on the Intermediate Neuroscience ICU at Jefferson Neuroscience Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

Lauren Yoslov ‘16 is a 2020 graduate of Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) with a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Health Services. At SJU, she worked in a biology research lab focused on sleep studies, where her contributions were published in an online biology journal, Genetics, in 2019. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson University in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. While at Jefferson, she participated in the nurse externship program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). Lauren currently works as a registered nurse in the nurse residency program on a hematology-oncology unit at HUP.

Catherine Lawless ‘17 accepted a nursing position this summer at Nemours AI duPont Hospital for Children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Alumni Spotlight: Anna South ‘15 Anna South ‘15 grew up speaking English and German, and as a kindergartener in Dusseldorf, Germany, she realized that Turkish was the first language she did not understand. She has wanted to learn Turkish since she was around six years old. This year, Anna can realize that dream. After studying English literature as part of the Joint Degree Programme between the College of William & Mary in Virginia and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 2019, Anna was accepted into the Fulbright Program in April 2021. Anna will be teaching, listening, and speaking classes for first-year Turkish students, as well as English drama from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Part of her grant includes Turkish lessons from her host university, and she plans to continue volunteering as a speaking class tutor for Paper Airplanes, a nonprofit organization that connects refugees and conflict-displaced individuals from Syria with English tutoring. Throughout her career so far, Anna has worked in theatre education, early childhood education, and English language education. Now she will continue to grow as an educator for all students.
