BA Year 3 Semester 2: Comprehensive Design Project

The project for the second semester of the third year revolved around designing a school of art in Birkenhead, England. The designated site was at the edge of Hamilton Square. It was important to fit the modern building with the context of the town square so the architecture complements each other. As an Art School it was important for the building to receive plenty of light as well as the right light, so it complements the space instead of distrac ng the students. Furthermore as an educa onal ins tu on the building requires specialist spaces for learning as well as spaces for students and faculty to relax in.

The Birkenhead School of art is mainly designed out of sandstone and concrete, the exterior of the building is cladded in sandstone, to match the context of the site. The interior of the building has a roar feeling with the floors being made out of polished concrete and the walls are painted with white Print. Some of the features around the building are wooden as well as the decking on the roof of the building. The structure of the building is designed to be made out reinforced concrete. In order to not obstruct the auditorium with columns the sealing is designed as a waffle slab so the load can be carried to the columns around of the room. The foundations of the building are sunken 4 meters bellow the lower floor of the building. In order to construct the building a 4 meter deep hole has to be excavated to accommodate for the lower ground. The elevator shaft is constructed out of solid steel with openings for windows to allow more light into the building. The building has mainly natural ventilation that takes effect through the process of stacked ventilation, cold fresh air sinks to the bottom of the building and as the air warms up it risen and escapes through the opening at the top of the building. Additionally to the natural ventilation there is a mechanical ventilation system in place to accommodate extraction from the workshop at the bottom ground. the building features two set of stairs, the main stairs and the fire stairs that are enclosed to prevent the smoke from getting into the fire escape staircase.

BA Year 3 Semester 1: Weather or Not

The Weather or not project is a project to design a building that is environmentally conscious as it will serve as research facility for climate change. The project is proposed to be built in at a hilltop site overlooking Hebden Bridge, England, a town that is heavily flooded every year. The goal for the started is to prevent the rain water running of the site and instead keeping the water within the site. Furthermore in order for the climate centre to be more environmentally friendly and reduce the carbon emissions the building is designed to be constructed out of materials that can be found on the site such as the stone from the quarry nearby.

The site chosen for this project is Located in the hilltops which overlook Hebden bridge town centre, The aim of the project is to build fac phenomenas caused by teh changing climat. However the secondary purpoes of the project is to educate people about climate change. Th serves a unique purpose. The mosst importan building is the research building which has both hemical labs to allow scientists to analyze how climate is effectign the world around us. The research building also has computer labs to analyse date colleced all over the world with

The Information building is designed with emaphais on teaching people about climate change through academic measures such as lectuer information building houses a small auditorium for giving lectures and a small library which attracts people to visit the site, thsi building people to visit the site. The Information buildng also has a large open gallery to display art influenced by climate change.

Teh last two buildings are: caffee Shop and Conemplation building, The contemplation building is orientaed toward teh centre of the site t site whereas the caffeteria imbraces teh views by being orientated towards the valley beneath.

Solar gains and ventilation Scale1:100

The Information building uses natural ventilation which is a proses of removing and supplying air to the building without using any mechanical systems, fresh air is pushed into the building by the wind from outside and once the fresh, cool air enters the building, it is wormed up and the wormer air rises to the top through the void around the stairs and escapes through the skylight above the stairs. This process creates pressure change which further drives the movement of fresh air. Once the air enters the building it is heated up by the vents installed in the floor next to the windows, by having the heat source near the windows prevents the cold air from sinking to the floor and thus creating cold spots around the building. Additionally the building has thick walls made out of stone and concrete which take a long time to heat up however once Another way to keep the building cool in summer and worm in winter is to plant tress around the buildings which will prevent the direct sunlight hitting the building thus the building will not heat up as much the walls are heated up the thermal energy is slowly released through the night. The building is also cooled through the evapotranspiration, which is the process of transferring energy from the soil or plants into the atmosphere through evaporation. Winter heat gains Scale1:100 Mechanical ventilation Scale1:100

Master map Scale1:500

In contrast the Research building requires extra mechanical ventilation as it has designated chemical laboratories and computer laboratories. The laboratories require extra ventilation as in the chemical laboratory, the chemicals used could produce harmful fumes therefore the room has to be well ventilated. In the computer labs, the computers produce a lot of heat Sun angles Scale1:100

During winter when the leaves fall of the tress the sunlight can directly influence the building

Artificial Light Scale1:100

Winter

This diagram shows how the angle of the sunlight changes and how that influences the building, the bright yellow colour represents the position of the sun in summer and the orange colour represents the winter position of the sun. The windows of the building are placed deep inside the wall which reduces the solar heat gains that could overheat the buildings. However in winter the sun is at a much smaller angle witch allows the direct sunlight to penetrate the building allowing for more solar heat gains, which will heat up the building.

The grit stone used on te construction of the buildings will be mined locally from the local quary therefore this will cut down on the embodied energy of the material as it willnot ahve to travel a long distance. Grit stone has density between 2130-2750kg/m3 and the failing stress in compression is around 195 N/mm3 makind it a very durable material. Howeve rthis is a fairly expenisve matterial as great care must be taken when digging out the stone so it is not damadged.

Structure information building Exploded isonometric structure drawing

The structure of the building is a combination of load bearing walls as wall as a steel structure, the whole load bearing structure rests on concrete foundations that are two meters deep. The load bearing walls are constructed out of grit stone that is mined from the local quarry as well as concrete. The longer spanning beams are 550mm deep and the connecting beams are 350mm deep. This structure combines the traditional aspect of architecture in Hebden Bridge as well as introduce a modern twist with the steel structure.

Concrete is a very durablematerial as it is a very dense material. THe density of concrete depends on what aggregate it is mixed with. If crushed limestone is used (which can be found on the site) the density of concrete becomes between 2160- 2400kg/m3. Concrete is not an environmentally friendly material as it is very difficult to recyle and production of concrete releases alot of CO2 into the atmosphare. The advantage of using concrete is that it can be produced on site which maeks it easy to deliver to the remote site. Concrete is a very good material as it has a ver low therma conductivity of 0.084W/mK however concrte becomes a better heat conductor if it is exposed to water. Furthermore concrte is a fire resistant material and 102mm load bearing wall can withstand 2 hours of high temperature before failing.

Steel is a material that is easily recyclable and beams can be reused from differfent projects. Steel is known for a very high strenght to cost ratio however it is know do perform poorly in fire with melting point at 1900 degrees celcius.. Steel has density of 7850kg/m3 which is significantly higher than concrete or grit stone. However unlike stone or concrete steel has thermal conductivity between 52-63W/mK

p

h the project is proposed to be built is exposed to high winds, however the topography of the site provides some protection from the ng the contemplation building on top of a hill at the South-West part of the site, the building blocks some of the incoming wind, Furaround the site will further reduce the impact of wind on the site. Additionally the trees will trap more water in the soil during heavy owing down the rate at which the water gets to the bottom of the valley. Lastly by adding green roofs on top of the buildings more water he site further decreasing the amount of water that reaches the valley.
