Pearce as the master of ceremonies, hundreds of drama and music students from Catholic schools all over the State, an orchestra, full choir and jazz band, the solemn feast of Christ the King was truly an all-encompassing event. 'We must not be afraid to live as true Christians in a pagan world, because only in this way, through the power of Christ working within us, will goodness triumph over evil, will truth win out over falsehood, will Christ reign in our hearts, in our families and in our cities,' the Archbishop preached 'We look forward, therefore, with joy, to the 20001h Birthday of Jesus Christ at Christmas and the New Millennium that follows. 'We look forward with confidence and with enthusiasm for the Mission entrusted to us. 'Be of good heart. Long live Christ the King!' The band performed light music for
over an hour to get the crowd in the mood and set the atmosphere for the Perth Catholic Church's gala event of the year as scores of buses transported parishioners to the oval. To kick off the day a parade of school banners entered the ground before the feast was trumpeted all over the city. Jubilee Trumpets played first at the Holy Door of St Mary's Cathedral in the city, then at Barracks Arch, Kings Park, the Catholic Education Office. out the front of Subiaco Oval, and climaxed with trumpeters finishing the fanfare on stage at the ground. The whole event was broadcast on an electronic screen, coordinated by Channel 7 and 9. Enter Archbishop Hickey and Bishop Robert Healy, who had been waiting in the wings for over half an hour for their grand entrance. When their moment came, they entered through the visiting teams' players' race. But they were no strangers to the sea of faces who greeted them with images of Christ and Mary emblazoned on parish and school banners and posters, and a cheer to rival the entrance of a West Coast Eagles squad onto the ground could be heard. It certainly fooled Greg Pearce. Continued on Page 15; Pictures Pages 8-9; Christ the King Jubilee celebration for laity - Page 3.
