Aged need a better bank deal, nun urges By Glynnis Grainger A Good Shepherd Sister has taken up the cudgel to help the elderly in her area get a better deal from the banks. Sr Mary Gilhooley. from the Dianella convent, does voluntary work in the Mirrabooka/Balga/Westminster area of the City of Stirling, and meets many people who have problems with banking. She told The Record last Wednesday week there was no longer a bank in any of these suburbs, so she has collected more than BOO signatures petitioning the banks to maintain a more convenient service for the elderly. She said many people had problems with banking as they did not have their own means of transport, had limited income, often had limited literacy and numeracy skills and restricted phone use. "In the past three years, the banks have systematically withdrawn their services to the people in these suburbs, despite the fact that Mirrabooka is a major regional shopping centre and is a central transit zone [for buses]," Sr Gilhooley said. "There are lots of automatic teller machines, just no human tellers for people to take their problems to, to explain [bank] statements that make no sense, to ask how they go about transferring money between accounts or to organise a bank cheque." These three suburbs have over 20,000 people living in them, she said. "When the ANZ Bank closed about two

years ago, we were told to use the Malaga branch, a half-hour journey each waN. not to mention time spent in the queue." she said. "The other bank in the area is the Commonwealth Bank two suburbs away in Nollamara, and includes an ATM. "Many people have told me they do not feel safe [using an ATM] standing on the pavement, with children on busy streets, and older people worry about being vulnerable to attack while their backs are turned." St Gerard's parish, Mirrabooka, has been responsible for over 800 signatures to Sister's petition to local council members of the City of Stirling, and Members of Parliament, to provide local banking services in the area. Sr Gilhooley said a local community bank was needed in the north-east of the City of Stirling. Nollamara resident Patrick Miller, from St Gerard's parish, spoke to The Record last Wednesday and said the City of Stirling has opposed the setting up of a community bank, similar to the one in Bayswater. His nearest Banlcwest branches were at Newmart Shopping Centre, Wanneroo Road, or at Dog Swamp Shopping Centre. He wanted to know 'what are their reasons' for the City of Stirling not supporting a community bank. Sr Mary Gllhooley

to bus their congregations to the football ground for the evening. Meanwhile. Archbishop Barry Hickey has issued 50,000 prayer cards through parishes this weekend as mementos of the Jubilee Year and reminders of the upcoming Subiaco event. The cards carry a prayer of dedication of the new Millennium to the protection of Mary, the Mother of God, written by the Archbishop and featuring a painting of the Visitation by Dan Mazzoni. Angelic sounds have been floating out of the Leederville parish centre in recent weeks as the 12 principal singers

The spectacular Solemnity of Christ the King celebration planned for Subiaco Oval on 26 November will be a once-in-a-lifetime event for Catholics in Perth and Western Australia. On the musical side it will feature principal singers, a massed 300-strong choir, traditional and contemporary sacred singing, a jazz big band made up of Christian professional muso's and a rock band. Organisers have drawn on musicians and singers from professional backgrounds, parishes, universities and schools. The twelve key singers who will perform leading roles during the celebration have been hard at work preparing for what will be the biggest spectacle of the Great Jubilee Year here in Perth. The principal singers are part of a musical extravaganza, a major part of the celebrations of the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ. Organisers are planning for a crowd of approximately 30,000 people to attend the celebration parishes and have already begun planning The Jubilee prayer card

prepare. The music they are per-

forming under the codirection of Greg Schultz and Paul McCarthy will cover both the traditional and the contemporary. Thierry Venaille. a parishioner of St Peter's parish in Ocean Reef, said it was 'very exciting' being part of the Great jubilee Celebration. A regular member of his parish choir, which is currently producing a CD, he is looking forward to the whole event And while the principal singers have been gearing up for the day, hundreds of others have been hard at work preparing for their musical roles as well.
