Spirituality can help with mental health: professor By Glynnis Grainger Many psychological problems can be addressed in spiritual terms, and not simply and solely according to the traditional medical model, a health care academic told an ecumenical service to open Mental Health Week last Sunday. This spirituality "provides strength, hope and meaning to life Professor Eamon Manley, from Edith Cowan versity, told the congregation at Wesley Uniting Church in Perth city. Professor Shanley found his voc.ation to mental health nursing in Ireland when he went to work in a hospital run by the St John of God monks. He said the process of of re-defining or looking at personal problems was "definitely a move to the spiritual: but many health professionals were unaware of a connection between what they are doing and spirituality. "This is EU1 extremely good and obvious link that should be followed by many organisations: he told the 150 gathered to mark mental health week. A highlight of the service was the presence of a colourful banner comprising patches submitted by people suffering

mentally illness, the Creative Expressions Unit at Graylands Hospital, and schools such as Sacred Heart College. The Reverend Joyce Wilkins of the Manning Uniting Church led the service. Jesuit Father Michael McShane, the Catholic mental health chaplain based at Graylands Hospital, reminded the congregation that "Jesus said not to wony and each day is enough tmuble on its own and not to wony." Referring to the 'twiner, FY McShane said people often saw the detail of life problems and did not see the bigger picture that bought hope to living. • Archbishop Barry Hickey willlead a reconciliation liturgy and celebrate Mass as part of the Mental Health Week Day of Reflection to be held at the Enunanuel Centre at 25 Windsor Street, Perth, this Sunday 15 October. Br Andrew, the religious name of Ian Travers-Ball, died at the house run by the Missionaries of Charity Sisters in Fitzroy. He was 72. In accordance with his wishes, news of his death was not published until after his funeral on 6 October. The day he died was also the 50th anniversary of the founding of Missionaries of Charity Sisters, and the feast of St Francis of Assisi. Missionaries of Charity Superior in Australia, Sr Dorothy, told The Record from Sydney last Monday that Br Andrew had been so busy in recent times giving retreats and conferences that, despite feeling unwell, he had not consulted a doctor. He had come to the missionaries' Fitzroy home on 23 September and it was only then that the Sisters there had persuaded him to see a doctor. After the consultation, he learned he was
