Bishops respond to report on women Australia's Catholic Bishops have released the full set of decisions they made last May to implement the findings of their four year research into the participation of women in the Catholic Church in Australia. The bishops have used their annual Social Justice Statement to publish their decisions in time for Social justice Sunday commemorated next Sunday, 24 September. The full text can be found in this Record on pages 7-8 and 13-14. At the time of the May meeting of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, the bishops revealed that they would establish a Commission for Australian Catholic Women to advise them on the participation of women in the Catholic Church in Australia. This advice would be based on the bishops' decisions and recommendations made in response to the report on this participation, Woman and Man: One in Christ Jesus. But no other details of their deliberations were revealed at the time. The Social Justice Statement reveals that the bishops have committed themselves "to work to establish, where necessary, and within the divinely ordained structure and communion of the Church' a better membership, leadership and professional
