Subiaco event leads to Christmas Eve Masses By David Kehoe

Christmas Eve Masses in Perth this year will form the main and final Jubilee 2000 event for the Archdiocese of Perth, Archbishop Barry Hickey has told all baptised Catholics in the archdiocese in a special letter distributed this weekend. "Christmas Eve 2000 is the time when the principal liturgical and spiritual celebration of the Great Jubilee will take place," Archbishop Hickey said in the invitation distributed through Catholic schools and parishes. "All the other events that have been taking place this year, both cultural and spiritual, have been leading up to the arrival of Christmas Eve this year." The Archbishop said that 18 months ago he had set the archdiocese's Great Jubilee Celebration of Christ the King at Subiaco Oval on 26 November as the major public celebration in Perth

for "the arrival of the Great Jubilee day" would be held on the Feast of Christ the King. He said the celebration on 26 November would "bring to a close two millennia of Liturgical Celebration." The following Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent - the first Sunday of each new Liturgical Year in the life of the Church. "We hope to fill Subiaco Oval. The assembly of so many people at Subiaco Oval will be a great witness of our faith in Jesus and, we hope, a massive communication to the wider community of the cultural and spiritual significance of the Anniversary just a few weeks further down the road In time." Archbishop Hickey said in the letter written before he left for Rome and Europe to participate in World Youth Day festivities he hoped the Christmas Eve celebration would see the "largest single attendance at Mass that has ever occurred in Western Australia on the one day." "On an average Sunday in the Archdiocese, some 60,000 people attend Mass," he said.

"This normally doubles at Christmas time but this year we expect many more again may be attending." He asked all parishes to prepare at the local level for those "many people who will wish to be part of this most special anniversary." The Archbishop also encouraged as many people as possible from parishes, schools and organisations to make a pilgrimage to Subiaco on 26 November. He said the Subiaco celebration would not include Mass because

he wanted people to go to their parishes for Mass. "Late in the afternoon, a spectacular pageant will be presented of the 2000-Year history of Christian culture," he said. "You will see cameos of some of the great saints, portraits of the great events, and you will be able to join the 400-voice choir in singing and praying some of the great hymns and prayers from our history. "The celebration will end with Benediction and a Blessing of all

present .... It will be a true celebration of all the Catholic people in the Archdiocese. "We hope many people who have drifted from the Church will also be in attendance, and people of other faiths will, of course, be welcome. "We hope the celebration will help us see how important the Christian faith is for our society and remember the profound effect it can have on our way of life. We want the Christ the King Celebration to be a "free" event so that as many people as possible can come." Archbishop Hickey also said a Jubilee for Catholic movements and organisations would be held at Aquinas College, on 28 October with a day of joint reflection and Mass. A "Blessing of the Fruits of the Earth Family Day Concert" would be held at Sandalford Vineyard. 8 October, he added. "Bring your family and friends to a sundown picnic at Sandalford Vineyard on Sunday, 8th October. Full text - Page 9; Lay movements to meet - Page 5
