By staff writers Western Australian Catholic Church history was made when Archbishop Barry Hickey ordained eight new priests in the biggest ever ceremony of its kind in St Mary's Cathedral. Perth, last Friday night, the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. As he did, one could sense the atmosphere of expectation followed by pride kind joy from the approximately 1000strong congregation, which included most of the priests of the Archdiocese, and filled St Mary's to overflowing. The feelings of the congregation. many of them friends and mlatives or parishioners who have come to know one or more of the eight nien. were evident in the singing which nearly, at times, lifted the lid off the cathedral. The ortlinands were arc.hdioceskin priests Douglas larriS, 40. Peter Meo, 40. Ric:hard Robertsen. 54. and fames Shelton. 67; and archdioceskin missionaries from the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Morley who belong to the Neo-Catechumenal Way: john Allen. 54. lames D'Souza. 35. Melvin Llabanes, 35. and Giosue Marini. 27
While the four archdiocesan priests will live and work within the archdiocese. their peers fmni Redemptnris Mater Seminary will spend two years working in the archIi at the Archdiocese before being released bishop's for missionary work •I elsewhere. probably in the Oceania region. For Archbishop Hickey, both the size of the occasion and the widely differing stories of those about to become priests all pmvided evidence of God at work in the lives of each.

There was also a joy that. in an era when vocations to the priesthood have declined
for many years, nothing had been able to stop Jesus fmm calling those He wanted as priest& -What encourages me enormously is that the c.all of Christ to the priesthood is being heard despite all the secular voices that would drown out that voice: he told the packed St Mary's Cathedral.
