Jesus in the Eucharist wants to change self-sufficient individuals into people who are part of God's family, Archbishop Barry Hickey told the closing ceremony of the National Eucharistic Congress in Wollongong last Sunday. 'The secular culture seeks to produce the self-sufficient individual, with rights and responsibilities, one who seeks to fulfil his or her potential, to use the gift of reason to distinguish between truth and falsehood, right and wrong, and to make personal choices about the way we live our lives,' Archbishop Hickey said.
'It all sounds wonderful, except it is not the person that Jesus wants to form. 'He wants to form us, not to be self-sufficient individuals, but to see ourselves in relationship to others, part of God's family.' Members of God's family did not focus on their rights and responsibilities, but sought to be 'other-centred, to reach out to others in love, especially the poor and those in need, and see in them the image of Jesus.'
