Updated Roman Missal due out soon The general instruction serves as an introduction to the missal. It explains the liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council; presents the theological understanding of the celebration of the Eucharist; explains the basic structure of the Roman liturgy; and outlines all the elements of the Mass, including the roles of the various ministers, the place of music in the celebration and the arrangement of the church. A Vatican official said the revised general instruction largely retained the content of the 1975 version, although with added restrictions and cautions about using optional prayers and gestures. "They did not openly outlaw anything that has been permitted," the source said. He said the revised instruction emphasises the need to show "special respect" for the tabernacle containing the Blessed Sacrament, urging that it be "close to the centre of attention" in a church. While the instruction does not say the tabernacle should be returned to a position near the central altar, he said, the document said that if the tabernacle was kept in a separate place it must be a suitably special Blessed Sacrament chapel.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) - The Vatican plans to publish updated instructions for celebrating the Mass when it releases the third Latin edition of the Roman Missal in early June. Archbishop Francesco Tamburrino, secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, said the revised "General Instruction of the Roman Missal" would be released around Pentecost, which is on 11 June this year. The archbishop said the instruction would be dated 20 April, Holy Thursday, which marked the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The last version of the instruction was published in 1975, the same year the Vatican published the second Latin edition of the Roman Missal. The missal contains all of the prayers and Scripture readings used for Masses in the Latin rite. Normally Ills divided into two books: the Lectionary, which contains the Scripture readings; and the Sacramentary, which contains all of the prayers.

the commission to revise its constitution "thoroughly and without delay." ICEL "in its present form is not in a position to render to the bishops, to the Holy See and to the English-speaking faithful an adequate level of service," Cardinal Estevez said. He said the Vatican had pointed out for a number of years that ICEL had been too free in its translations. Continued on Page 15

Three generations join Church at Armadale vigil

Smiles all round: Fr Tony Pires baptises young Sarah Loennans as mother Kylie holds on.

By Carolyn Richer An Armadale family had special cause to celebrate this Easter. Three generations of one family were received into the church through baptism and confirmation at the Easter Vigil at St Francis Xavier Parish as well as eight other candidates and catechumens. Ills believed to be the first time that three generations have been baptised and confirmed at the same time at Armadale. Lyn Harapeet, her daughter and son-inlaw - Kylie and Jeff Loernians - and their 9-month-old daughter, Sarah, all took part in the special ceremony at the Vigil Mass. Lyn, following in the footsteps of her husband Brian, who was received into the church two years ago, said, "I've always believed in God, but coming to church to support Brian,Isaw that Father Tony Pires was especially great with children; he was my inspiration." "It felt good tonight.Iam so happy that my daughter and son-in-law have found God, but I'd like to see my son and granddaughter baptised too." Kylie, still excited from the ceremony-, said, "It was overwhelming.Ifelt so emotional .... It's like one of the best days of your life." Kylie said that although her husband Jeff wasn't religious, all of a sudden they had felt the need to go to church. At first they had started attending a church of another denomination in support of a friend but it didn't quite feel right.

Three generations enter the Church at St Francis Xavier, Armadale, on the Easter Vigil: Grandmother Lyn Harapeet, rear, her daughter, Kylie and son-in-law Jeff with their child, Sarah.

But when her Dad, Brian, was confirmed at St Francis Xavier two years ago. she said, "I just loved the warmth of that community so I asked Dad about it. Sometimes he goes on and on, butIreally wanted to know more about the Catholic faith, so, on this occasion,I was happy to let him go on and on. Continued on Page 2
