By Peter Rosengren By John Norton VATICAN CITY (CNS) - During a Lenten Mass in St Peter's Basilica rich with symbols of penitence last Sunday, Pope John Paul fl solemnly asked forgiveness for the past and present sins of Christians. From the Jubilee's earliest planning stages, the Pope has called the Chtur.h to a "ptuification of memory" as it embarks on the third Christian millennium. "This first Sunday in Lent seemed to me a favourable occasion for the Church, gathered spiritually around the successor of Peter, to implore divine forgiveness for the sins of all believers," said the Pope, wearing dark purple vestrnents embroidered with brilliant silver panels. - Son Nguyen, Phong Nguyen and Huy Nguyen - those at St Mary's cathedral have followed their own path in life; theirs has taken them into full membership of the Catholic Church while for the three deacons the priesthood is their call. The catechumens and candidates will join the Church at Easter, after having journeyed to it through the RCIA process. The three young Vietriamese-born Australian men have also made their own journey through years of studies at St Charles archdiocesan seminary and the University of Notre Dame in Australia at Fremantle and pastoral placements. For both groups, one stage of their life was ending and another beginning. Both had been led to their decisions following mud prayer and reflection in their lives. Confirmed on Page 11
