Prayer, planning 'key to winning pro-life struggle'

By Peter Roseagren 1Wo years after the abortion debate convulsed Western Australia. Catholic prolife campaigners continued their lonely vigil against the killing of unborn children in Belmont last Saturday morning. Archbishop Barry Hickey urged the fifty or so campaigners onwards, telling them he was with them that morning to support them in their pleading to almighty God on behalf of unborn children and their mothers. He was also with them in their efforts to warn the world of the terrible mistake it Is making in sacrificing unborn lives. As he spoke at an 8.30am Mass in St Anne's Church, Belmont, other Catholics and Christians were praying outside the Belmont abortion clinic just two kilometres away, approaching women entering or leaving the clinic and handing out prayer cards which contained Miraculous Medals. After Mass, Archbishop Hickey led the congregation in a procession to the clinic. Earlier, the Archbishop urged worshippers to continue to make themselves available for women who may, at the last moment change their minds in favour of life. Abortion was an intensely spiritual matter as most of the world's ills are, he said. Those who fought for life lived in the midst of a re-flowering of paganism, characterised by such things as the rise of witchcraft, the advance of homosexual practice, war and the tragedy of abortion. "All harm the human race because they go against the plan of God and against

our human nature," he said, adding "So we are here for a very spiritual purpose." He pointed out that prayer was essential in the fight for life. "It's one thing to plan, to minister, to campaign," he said. "But it's another to pray. The two must go together." He called on Mary, the Mother of Jesus, "to be with the mothers [considering abortion] to touch their hearts and minds so they will turn away from the terrible thing they are contemplating and change their minds."
