Bateman parish makes it happen for server Nicholas

Heather Cooper and Nicholas Peters serve Fr Joseph Tran.

Nicholas Peters always wanted to be an altar server, as all his school friends were altar servers. But for a long time he was afraid to ask for fear of being rejected, as he was born with spina bifida and spends a lot of his time in a wheelchair. liis parents, Anna and Norman Peters, realised the difficulties but encouraged him to personally approach Monsignor Michael Keating, their St Thomas More, Bateman, parish priest. According to parishioner, Gary Garreffa, Mgr Keating was delighted and arranged with a couple of parish acolytes to see how this request could be achieved. Once the logistical problems were overcome, Nicholas was soon on the parish altar servers' roster. When he served for the first time last August, all his family were there in the front row to

show support and love, including his grandparents, uncles and aunties. Last month, Nicholas was rostered to serve Mass at a time which dashed with his competing in the WA Disabled Sports Association annual games. Rather than organise a replacement, Nicholas asked if he could swap with someone else to serve the following weekend. At the WADSA games he competed in eight events - the under12 javelin, shot-put, discus, as well as wheelchair racing in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m. and 1500m - and won eight gold medals. Gary Garreffa said Nicholas' mum Anna said younger sister Christina was sometimes a little fed up with Nicholas getting so much attention. But, on the other hand, Christina wants to grow up and be just like her big brother, because she

Cooper family - acolyte Colin, and altar servers Heather and Chris - have done everything possible to help and work in with Nicholas when serving together. Nicholas is a student at Yidarra Catholic Primary School, BateGlyrmis Grainger man.
