Maida Vale parish shows it is the little things that count By Father Geo Patrick St Francis of Assisi parish, Maida Vale, sent more than 200,000 used stamps to the missions last year to boost aid funds. "Sixteen used stamps could pay for the cost of one antibiotic injection for children in the third world countries," parish secretary Beth Jeppe said recently. A cataract eye operation could be paid for with $27 The "Used Stamps for Mission" project sent 218,000 stamps last year to four mission associations. This January. 10,511 stamps have been received. The habit of collecting the used stamps began in December 1998. After reading an article on how used stamps help the International Blind Mission. Beth Jeppe asked parishioners to drop the philatelic items into a box kept in the Church portico.

Bob Couley, who had been collecting stamps for many years brought his whole collection and handed them over. At first, the parish sent the stamps to the Victorian-based Christians Blind Mission International and to the Jesuit Mission. Mrs Jeppe then approached the parishioners for the addresses of other mission centres. Now, the stamps go regularly to the Salesian Missions, Aid to the Church in Need, St Columban Mission Society, and the Divine Word Mission. The Salesian Missions wrote back and said the money raised has been earmarked for the relief and education of people in East Timor. The parishioners are surprised that the used stamps, generally thrown into the dustbins, could be of use to help carry out the Church's missionary activities.

The parish newsletter publishes the number of stamps received on a weekly basis. The parish also has regular contact with the missions through letters.
