Teachers' Jub ee

Four thousand Catholic teachers and other school staff gathered in Challenge Stadium last Tuesday to begin the new school year with a celebration of Mass for the Great jubilee 2000. Archbishop Barry Hickey reminded the historic gathering their teaching vocation was a noble one that was "to be lived and carried out under that covenant that exists between ourselves and God." It was a "call from God to offer our children high quality education in the context of our Faith." There was hardly another group in the Church with such power for influencing young people as teachers, Archbishop Hickey told the Jubilee celebration in Mt Claremont. "Parents, priests and Church authorities are all with you in your efforts to do the best for our children," he said. It was the first time so many teachers in the archdiocese, and staff of the Catholic Education Office and the Catholic Institute, had met as a group for Mass. Seventy priests from the Archdiocese concelebrated the Mass with Archbishop Hickey, Bishop Robert Healy, Monsignor Michael Keating and Catholic Education Office religious education director Father Gerard Holohan. CEO director Therese Temby welcomed and farewelled the mass gathering.

"We respect and honour the unique vocation you have to instruct and form our young ones on behalf of the Church and society," Archbishop Hickey told the teachers. He thanked the teachers on behalf of Bishop Healy and himself "for the warm welcome you always give us when we visit the schools, usually on the occasion of a parish visitation." Archbishop Hickey said the whole Christian world was celebrating the year 2000 as a special holy year of remembrance, recalling the coming of Christ into the world 2000 years ago. "Let us then fully participate in this Year of Jubilee," he told the packed stadium,

"and proclaim the liberty that flows from seeking to place ourselves and the whole world under the loving reign of God, to proclaim that Jesus is Lord." Archbishop Hickey reminded the teachers that "Our relationship with God is called, in biblical terms, a covenant - a solemn agreement, a solemn pact." —This year of Jubilee is about honouring the terms of that covenant," he said, which was both personal and communal. "We are asked to renew our commitment to the New Covenant this year by entering fully into the spirit of jubilee, seeking to forgive those who have hurt us, being reconciled to one another as brothers and sisters, restoring Justice to the world,
