Sampson puts shoulder to the Catholic Mission wheel By Glynnis Grainger The new Perth Archdiocesan director of the Catholic Mission office is a woman who has wanted the job for 10 years. Sherie Sampson has succeeded Patsy Godwin in the position. In the past 10 years Mrs Sampson has been working in her career as a nurse and nursing administrator, after graduating from Curtin University in 1989. She combined her studies, career and motherhood - she has two grown-up daughters - with the help of her late parents and husband, Ian. Besides other casual jobs, Mrs Sampson has worked as a nurse at Royal Perth Hospital, as a nurse manager at St John of God Hospital. Murdoch, done clinical

supervision of undergraduate students at Curtin University, and performed contract management for the Health Department. A member of the Bateman parish of St Thomas More, she
has been active in parish and school activities. Born in Boulder and educated there, Mrs Sampson said she has always had an interest in Third World countries. She went to India in 1995-96
with the assistant parish priest from Bateman parish, and worked in a leprosarium in Calcutta for six weeks with Mother Teresa. "I am going to Burma on January 30 as I was asked to set-up a program for the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition," she said. 'Patsy left on December 10 to read books and become a grandmother and I started between Christmas and New Year. "My contract is between the national office in Sydney, where Father Brian Brock is the national director, and the Archdiocese of Perth, where the Archbishop is my immediate boss." Mrs Sampson said Pope John Paul II had said that it was every Christian's job to go out and promote mission.
"We need to be going out and actively promote the Good News. "I hope to go out and see ladies' groups and other community organisations and give talks about my trips to India and Burma, after I return at the end of February. "They can contact me here at Catholic Mission and I will be only too happy to speak to them." Mrs Sampson hopes to increase local commitment to Catholic Mission programs such as Children's Mission Partners, St Peter Apostle and the Propagation of the Faith appeals. Her colleague, Sr Margaret Culham, who has recently returned from doing missionary work in Uganda. will be visiting schools to give talks on mission during 2000.
