JOINT SCHOOL PROJECT IS A FIRST

-

MELBOURNE. Australia's first joint Catholic and State Education Department school will be built in Templestowe. A T-shaped piece of land off Serpells Road in Templestowe will have a State primary school on one side, a Catholic primary school on the other, and in the centre a shared core building and shared sports grounds.

It all began when the State Education Department realised that it did not have a site for a school in a developing part of Templestowe, and approached the Catholic Church with a suggestion of shared resources. The Catholic parish of St Kevin's owns 3.19 hectares of land and the State Education Department bought 1.9 hectares which backs on to the Catholic land, Doncaster and TempleCouncil is the party in the cooperative project --it has contributed 3.9 hectares of land for *.ne sports stowe

area, which will be used

by the community as well as the schools. Work will start on the core building, to be used by both schools, and State school building next year, for completion during 1980. The Catholic school will then lease the former State school portable buildings for three years until their own building is ready. The core building will cost about $840,000, with the Catholics contributing $250,000, the incouncil $100,000

By 1981 there are expected to be about 350 pupils in the State school 200 in the Catholic school, but eventually the twin schools will cater for a total of about 1000 children as more houses are built around the area. Each school will be autonomous, but those involved in planning

continuing co-operation among the staff and the parents. The combined Catholic and State school project in Templestowe represents a new direction in education in Victoria and the State Education Department now sought opportunities to co-operate in any project compatible with education, said Mr Neville Barwick, Assistant Director -General of Education in Vic-

toria.

Mr Barwick said the government had introduced legislationthe Outreach Act in December 1978 to allow investment of public money in joint projects, even on land that did not belong to the government. State
