Abortion

payments moves this

Commencing week, on November 1, the Federal Government will be paying for the whole cost of every abortion, less S20; those whose Health Funds pay for abortions will be able to claim the remainder from the Fund. A N.S.W. Government backbencher, Mr. Stephen Lusher intends to move shortly a general business motion in the House of Representatives to end medical benefits for abortions. Mr. Lusher cites the $3.4 million paid out for 51,000 abortions last year and this represent only claims under Item 6469, not including abortions in standard wards or other pathology and anaesthetic services.

"No-one has disputed my estimate that the government pays out close to $6 million a year for aborfions," he said. "In Australia last year about 180,000 babies were born, and another 60,000 aborted. "I do not believe it is in any way possible for one pregnancy in four to require medical Termination on

Founds."
