ARCHBISHOP SLATES MASS

DISSIDENTS Archbishop Goody has strongly condemned publications arriving by mail from outside the State which question the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The text of his statement is: It has come to my knowledge that many people, including school principals, have been bombarded with ktters and pamphlets attacking recent liturgical reform, and particularly the English versions of the Mass. A little group outside the State, unlawfully calling itself the "Catholic Research Centre" is at considerable expense going to great lengths to disturb the faithful equanimity with which the vast majority of Catholics have accepted the revisions which have made our public worship so much more accessible to all of us. This little irritant group has no standing whatsoever; it is condemned by all the authorities of the Catholic Church in Australia.

Pope's Decree The new forms of the liturgy were ordered by the Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican and promulgated by Pope Paul VI on April 3, 1969 with the following decree: "We decree that these laws and prescriptions be firm and effective now and in the future, notwithstanding, to the extent necessary, the apostolic constitutions and ordinances issued by our predecessors and other prescriptions, even those deserving special mention and derogation." Dissidents, therefore, are opposing their private judgement to the decrees of the Pope, the reigning Vicar of Christ on earth, and of the Ecumenical Council. To assert that the present Pontiff has not the same authority claimed and exercised by his predecessors is to deny the fundamental Catholic belief in the living authority of the Church.
