PORTS POLICY: SAILORS' SUNDAY Christian people are neglecting the seafaring visitors to Austral:an ports and leaving them as prey to undesirables, according to Father Sean O'Shea, port chaplain at Fremantle. In a letter to priests for Apostleship of the Sea Sunday (July 31) Father O'Shea, who is national director of the movement, says that the "open port" facility in Australia is bringing its problems.

THE ARCHBISHOP

ON THE BIBLICAL

APOSTOIATE My dear people, For some time we have been determined to

promote the Biblical Apostolate in the Archdiocese of Perth and to that end Father Patrick Ahern, Parish Priest of Moora, was appointed Diocesan Director. This year Bible Sunday occurs on August 7 next and on that day and during the following week it would be most appropriate for you to stress the importance for all Catholics to know

and read the Holy Scriptures. It is the inspired word of God ever available to us between the covers of the Bible; it is the basis of all our preaching; it is the inspiration of Christian life and the source of our knowledge of God's Revelation to man 'through Jesus Christ. Bible study in its many forms is a great help to the understanding of our faith when directed and encouraged by the teaching authority of the Church; Bible reading with love and devotion is a fruitful source of encouragement, peace and of the grace of God. I commend the promotion of the Biblical Apostolate to all our priests, to our teachers, to all Parish Pastoral Councils and indeed to everyone. Yours sincerely in Xt., L. J. GOODY, Perth, W.A. Archbishop of Perth. 26th July, 1977.

"Attractive as it sounds, entertaining visiting sailors in private homes is not practicable because of the quick stopover of ships these days," he said. There was a need for people to get to know the Apostleship of the Sea and to offer their help.

OPPORTUNITIES He listed some of the opportunities: To visit the Stella Maris centre this weekend, inspect the premiere and talk to the staff and visitors. Talk over different ways in which people can offer their services, such as
