Russian Priest Disappears While In Finland -A
ROME. Russian -born priest who disappeared earlier this month in Helsinki, Finland, had long considered himself a marked man in the eyes of the Soviets, a colleague said in Rome. According to this source, Father Ivan Kornievsky had for some time expected what presumably happened to him in Helsinki-his kidnapping and his probable secret transport back to Red-ruled Russia. This was disclosed in Rome by another Russian priest who knew Father Kornievsky intimately during his years of study in Rome. "He knew he was being watched," said the priest, who asked that his name not be made publilc, "because my parents are in Russia." "He had a presentiment he would be taken some day. The Reds just waited until he got near enough to carry it out," this priest said. The Holy See was concerned at Father Kornievsky's disappearance, the priest said, and reoeived a personal report on it from priest who came to Rome for a congress on refugees visiting and migration. priest was taken to one of the highest authorities in a Vatican secretariat to deliver his report.
The disappearance of the Russian priest was made known in Brussels, Belgium, by a spokesman for the Oriental Christian Centre for Russia. Father Kornievsky h a d worked at the Brussels centre since 1957. The spokesman said that Father Kornievsky was in Finland to visit the monastery of New Valaam. There he acted as an adviser to a Russian -language publishing house. Some of the books he worked on came under bitter attack in the Soviet press, and this convinced him that his work was worthwhile, his Roman colleague said. Father Kornievsky felt his publishing work had put him on the Soviet list of those to be eliminated, this priest alleged. During the World's Fair held in Brussels from April to October, 1958,' Father Kornievsky worked at the Vatican pavilion, and there greeted a number of Soviet tourists. At his suggestion pavilion distributed t h e about a thousand New Testaments and two or three hundred copies of the entire Bible, as well as other religious works in Russian. His Roman colleague said he did not know the circumstances of the priest's kidnapping. "But however it happened, he is in a very difficult position indeed," the Russian priest said.
