HIS GRACE BLESSES MODERN CHURCH FOR "WORTHY OF THE OLD FAITH IN THIS NEW LAND"
SHENTON PAR Twenty-five years after the parish had been founded and twenty-three years of the present parish priest's endeavours, the parish of St. Aloysius at Shenton Park had its parish church. His Grace the Archbishop solemnly blessed the new memorial church on Thursday last and presided at the Solemn High Mass which followed, The blessing of the exterior of the church began at 7.30 p.m. with the congregation massed outside the church. As His Grace moved into the building, the parishioners filled up the pews to capacity. His Grace blessed the altar, sanctuary and then went round the interior of the church building sprinkling it with holy water. At the conclusion of the blessing ritual, all ministers vested for the Solemn High Mass. The celebrant was Rt Rev. Monsignor E. J. Collins, parish priest of Shenton Park. Deacon and sub deacon were former curates, Revs. W. Foley and J. Mullins. The master of ceremonies was Rev. T. Phelan. Assistant priest and assistants at the throne to His Grace the Archbishop were
Indulgences Granted Holiness Pope XXIII has authorised new indulgences to be gained by those who offer their sufferings to God. The authorisation was reported in the current issue of the offical Vatican publication, Acts of the Holy See. The publication stated that a plenary indulgence may be gained under the usual conditions by those who in the morning have offered their sufferings His

Park. In his sermon, Father Alphonsus compared the cold welcome given to Joseph and Mary at Bethlehem to the warm welcome given to Christ by the parishioners of Shenton Park in their excellent effort to supply a fitting home for Christ and the celebration of His mysteries. Father Alphonsus said that the church was fittingly named after St. Aloysius, patron of youth. He commented that youth certainly needed a leader like him today. A leader was needed, he said, who would show, as St. Aloysius did, selfdenial, fidelity to Christ and no compromise with principle. The preacher also commented that the church was fitting as a memorial to fallen soldiers. "They would ask nothing more," he said, "than to be remembered on this altar of sacrifice." At the conclusion of the Mass, His Grace the Archbishop congratulated the parish priest, Monsignor Collins, and the parishioners of Shenton Park. His Grace commended them for their patience. He said that if they had moved some years ago and built a church, they might not have built one like this present pleasing one.

His Grace said that Monsignor Collins, ever since he had come to Shenton Park 23 years ago, had been planning this church in his mind. He said that he had taken an extraordinary interest in every detail of the design and construction of the church, and that he had now presented everyone with this handsome erection in con-
ings by means of a pious ejaculation.

and that it had been furnished and equipped in a tasteful and liturgical manner. His Grace said: "It is worthy of the noble purpose for which it has been built, worthy of the old Faith in this young land and worthy of the spirit of sacrifice of the parishioners of Shenton Park." He went on to say that the utmost credit was due to all who had any part in the erection of this house of prayer, where "the Eternal Mysteries will be relived day after day and year after year in an atmosphere of solemn piety." His Grace congratulated the architect, Mr. A. J. O'Hara, and the contractors, -

School here. The parish priest, Father Joseph Cleary, has asked the national
Catholic Education Council, which works with the .government in school matters, if persons known to be opposed in principle to religious schools can be kept from serving as managers of them. He declared: "The fact that a local education authority is free to appoint whom it pleases to represent it on a board of managers means that
every parish priest in England faces the possibility of a situation like this." A Ministry of Education spokesman pointed out that since Church authorities appoint four managers as opposed to two by local public school authorities, the majority should be able to prevent abuses. There is also a right of appeal to the national body. Terence Casey, the first Catholic to be named piesident of the national Association of Headmasters, commented that while it would be deplorable of Catholic schools, he believed British local authorities were determined to keep this from oeeurrh He said "it would be wrong for the Catholic body to bring undue pressure to determine who shall represent al, lied interests on the boards of management of 'hoots."
