Scholastic Year On Thursday lost, at St. Charles' Seminary, the scholastic year opened with the Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, at which His Grace the Archbishop presided. The Rector of the Seminary was celebrant, assisted by members of the staff and students. The Archhbishop was attended at. the throne by Very Rev. Father Peter, 0.F.M., and the Rev. Father J. Dowling, Administrator, Guildford. The Mass was sung in the Gregorian chant by the students. The "Red Mass," the Solemn Votive Mass invoking the inspiration and blessing of the Holy Spirit, is the customary and fitting manner of beginning the year's work in many Catholic colleges, and for various professional groups. Last Thursday's Mass was offered that the Holy Spirit would bestow His blessings upon St. Charles', in this its 21st year, and that He would aid the spiritual and scholastic progress of the seminarians.

After the Mass, His Grace addressed the students in the Seminary Chapel. He reminded them of those disciples of St. John the Baptist, who were moved to ask Our Divine Lord where it was He dwelt, and of the

reply Jesus Christ made them: "Come and see." "You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you." His Grace quoted these words also, pointing out to the students that they had received th6 call from the Divine Master to "come and see" His dwelling in the Seminary. Having answered this call, His Grace said, they must make use of the opportunities the Seminary afforded, for a greater training in obedience and charity, as part of their preparation for the priesthood; for what they were now, as seminarians, that they would be in future years, as priests. Studying at St. Charles' this year are 47 students, of whom four are for the Diocese of Geraldton, four for Bunbury, and most of the remainder for the Archdiocese of Perth. With 20 students studying philosophy, the Senior House is filled to capacity, while 23 students, comprising Sub Leaving Leaving and classes, have taken up the greater part of the accommodation available in the Junior House. Four more students, although they have passed the Leaving Certificate, have not done sufficient Latin to enter into their studies in philosophy. Two of last year's students have gone on to study theology at the Seminary of St. Francis Xavier in Adelaide and one at St. Patrick's College, Manly. A fourth has gone to join the Society of St. Columban in Sassafras, Victoria.
