JUNIOR EXAMS 1961
MISSION DIRECTOR'S REPORT EXPRESSES GRATITUDE Last year, the people of the Archdiocese of Perth contributed more than ever before to the Pontifical Mission Aid Societies. In spite of rising prices on many essential commodities, the response to the appeals made by the director and his assistant have amounted to a record £22,573/19/9. The mission report of the director, Very Rev. Mgr. M. McKeon, is given below and
the extensive list of the response to the appeals in parishes and schools is given on Page 5. In his "Life of St. Francis Xavier," the author, Father, Broderick, says that no man or woman can be the Catholic or the Christian that God meant him to be unless the vast shadow of the pagan world is in the hack of his consciousness and the needs of those pear pagans the substance of his prayers.
"Thy Kingdom Come" comes easily to the lips, he writes, but if there is not also agony in the heart, the terrible sigh of the soul of God, it means nothing. "When we take a look at the Mission Returns for the Archdiocese of Perth for the year 1961, we must admit the words "Thy Kingdom Come" have a real meaning for our Catholic people. "From the Parish Returns we see that, in spite of their already heavy commitments, parishioners have looked out past the boundaries of their own parish. They have looked out past the shores of their own country and in a practical way with typical
Australian generosity they have shown their compassion for the millions who like are still wandering "sheep that have no ShepTime they herd." and again, have been reminded of the pathetic words of the Good Shepherd: 'And other sheep I have that are not of this fold, them also I must bring, and they shall hear My Voice, for there shall be one fold and one Shepherd:' "They have listened to these words, and as the results so clearly show, they have mingled their sacrifices with the sacrifices that are being made in sweat and blood by our missionaries throughout the pagan world. 'They have,'
as
our Holy
Father the Pope puts it, 'given tangible evidence of a Christian conscience truly alive.' They have displayed a charity that is real and, as St. Paul said, 'without hypocrisy.'
Children Give "When we consider the contributions from the various schools and realise that in the past year the chil-
dren have increased their contributions to the Missions by £860/3/5, we can only say of those children with Our Divine Lord: 'Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.'
"It is refreshing to visit our schools and to find everywhere a lively interest in the Missions. In one school there is the daily offering for the Missions; in another the Mission box activity is very much in evidence; in another still there are the fetes and bazaars organised by the children; and in all we see the spirit of sacrifice inspired by the good teachers which leads those children even at a tender age to cast aside selfishness and think of those who are less fortunate than they are.
Mission Losses "In the past year Almighty God called to their eternal reward many friends of the The late Bishop Rafferty was, as administrator of St. Mary's Cathedral, one of the first organisers of Mission aid in the Archdiocese and as Auxiliary Bishop he always showed a keen and encouraging interest in the progress of Mission Aid Societies. Missions.
"Another great friend of the Missions was the late Reverend Mother Columbanus, of Bassendean Convent. Wherever Mother Columbanus taught, where ever she was in charge of a school, there were always to be found under her guidance and inspiration children whd were most enthusiastic workers for the
Missions. "From the ranks of the laity also Almighty God called many loyal supporters of the Missions during the past year. With the Mission-
aries throughout the world we say a fervent prayer that God may grant unto them eternal rest in the company of those whom they helped
to get to Heaven. "I wish to take this opportunity of saying a word of sincere thanks to the priests of the Archdiocese who made my work so very easy by their ready co-operation and warm hospitality on the occasions of my visits to the arious parishes. The zeal of the Brothers and Sisters in fostering the cause of the Missions in our schools leaves nothing to be desired the results speak for themselves.

"I should like to say a special word of thanks to
Very
Reverend Father Nolan, the Superior of the Servite Order, Tuart Hill, who at no small inconvenience to himself, put at the disposal of the Missions a member of his community, Reverend Father Doherty, who appealed so successfully in a number of parishes that the Increase in Propagation of the Faith Returns for 1961 is due in no small measure to his zealous efforts. "I would also like to thank "The Record" for the allotment .of free space for the weekly "Mission Notes." The results that come from this weekly column are a clear indication that 'it pays to advertise.' "And now for 1962 Already the appeals for the Missions have begun. The appeals do not vary much, I am sorry to say, but neither do the needs of the Missions vary. The harvest is still great and your continued faith, your unending charity, are the only reservoits that Christ has on earth from which He can draw help for His poor, the pagan millions of the world. "May these reservoirs be always filled to overflowing, and may Gcd reward you a hundredfold for your prayers and sacrifices for His Missions."

ROME DEFIED! Seven More Bishops "Consecrated" For Reds Seven Chinese priests were consecrated bishops in Red China's capital at Peking on January 21 at the conclusion of the second the communist -controlled "Patoiotic Catholic Association," according to the Chinese communist news agency. All were allegedly consecrated in :inc ceremony in Nantang Church by Archbishop Ignatius P'i of Mukden. lie was said to have been assisted by six bishops -three of whom had been lawfully consecrated and three unlawfully.
The seven men newly consecrated in opposition to the authority of the Holy See are reportedly for the three archdioceses of Kaifeng, Taiyun and Foochow, and the three dioceses of Chenting; Shiuchow and Fenyang, and for Waiyeung, a part of the Hong Kong diocese that is inside mainland China. Some of these priests had been reported "elected"

The organisers of the conference are grateful to Mr. Rintoul and executive of the Catholic Teachers' Guild
for establishing contact with various specialist teachers of the Education Department, and to the above speakers for making their time and talents available to the conference. A Mass to inaugurate and dedicate the School Year will be held at St. Mary's Cathedral on Friday, February 2, at 10 a.m. The speaker will be Father T. Barden, S.J., who has recently assumed duties as Dean of St. Thomas More College.
under communist direction to be bishops three or four years ago. There are grounds for believing that at least some of them had been resisting communist pressure to accept unlawful consecration until recently.
Up To Forty The number of unlawfully consecrated bishops in China is now believed to be more than forty.
The new illicit consecrations in communist China
-the first the Chinese Reds
have revealed to the outside world since that of several bishops in the ecclesiastical province of Nanking in November, 1959-bring automatic excommunication both to the men consecrated and to the consecrating bishops. The Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office stated explicitly in a decree issued 1951 that all bishops taking part in a consecration with out the express permission of the Holy See fall under excommunication automatically. The first such unlawful consecrations took place in Wuhan on April 13, 1958, when two priests were raised to the episcopate by Bishop Joseph Li Tao-nan of Ptichi. The New China
News Agency, official communist organ, stressed at the time that the Holy See's refusal to approve the consecration and the explicit penalty of excommunication were known to all concerned. It boasted that the consecrations were "the first ever performed by Chinese bishops independently since Catholicism came to China more than 300 years ago." Archbishop P'i of Mukden reportedly served as consecrator in one previous consecration ceremony in June, 1958, and two in 1959. Now 65, the Archbishop was arrested by the communists in October of 1951. For a time it was believed that he had died in gaol. But while he
became ill, he survived, and was let out of prison after serving three years.
"Impeded" Two of the archdioceses and two of the dioceses now given illegally consecrated bishops have legitimate Ordinaries-bishops whom the Reds have barred from their
rightful administrations.
The Bishop of Fenyang is Bishop Simon Lci Changhsia, 46, who was consecrated in 1949. The Annuario Pontificio, official statistical year book of the Holy See, lists him as "impeded" in his duties. The Archdiocese of Taiyuan has as its legal head Archbishop
Romenic Copozi, O.F.M., who was imprisoned and then expelled from China. He now resides in a
Franciscan
monastery
in
Rome. Foochow, another archdiocese for whom a new
bishop has been consecrated, is headed by Archbishop Theodore Labrador, 0.P., who was expelled a decade ago and is now staying in a Dominican priory in Madrid. The legitimate Bishop of Shiuchow is Bishop Michele Arduino, S.D.B. He was imprisoned by the Reds prior to being expelled and now lives in Turin, Italy, site of the Salesian mother house. Fides, mission news service of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, said of the "patriotic" church in China that it is only a "skeletal organisation with "a very feeble number of priests." It said that the illegally consecrated bishops, "after months and in many cases years of moral torture with minds destroyed by indoctrination and probably with their free will alienated, acquiesced to become chiefs of the 'patriotic' church." Despite communist attempts to give the impression that there has been a of Catholics Continued on Page 16.
