Requiem Mass On Friday last, the Archdiocese formally mourned the passing of the Most

Reverend John Joseph Rafferty, Bishop of Pharan and Auxiliary to His Grace the Archbishop. His Lordship died in Ireland on the eve of his return to the Archdiocese after six months with his relatives. The Pontifical Requiem Mass was presided at by His Grace the Archbishop and celebrated by the Most Reverend A. Gumme r, Bishop of Geraldton. The panegyric on the late Bishop Rafferty was preached by the Most Reverend L. J. Goody, Bishop of Bunbury. The Lord Abbot of New Norcia, the Most Reverend Gregory Gomez, O.S.B., was present in the sanctuary. His Grace was assisted by Right Reverend Monsignors E. Kennedy, assistant priest, E. Moss and E. Last year the priest, who holds strong views on matters of social justice, joined 46 other Catholics, including six priests, in signing a letter to Prime Minister Antonio De Oliveira Salazar protesting police abuses. He and the other signers

Present in the sanctuary were right reverend and very reverend monsignors from the Archdiocese, the Diocese of Banbury and New Norcia. Over 170 priests were present, from all over the State, testifying to wide range of the late Bishop's memory with the priests of the ecclesiastical province. Representatives of all religious orders were present at the Requiem Mass. The rest of the space in the Cathedral was taken up by members of the laity who were able to get to the

In February, 1960, Manuel Serra, a member of the Portuguese Catholic Action movement, was arrested for alleged complicity in an abortive uprising in March, 1959. He escaped from a Lisbon hospital disguised as a priest. It was alleged that the cassock he wore came from Father Costa Pio. Serra sought political asylum in the Cuban legation and then left the country for Brazil. But now, having returned to Portugal clandestinely, he has been arrested in connection with the Beja assault.
