WELL - LIKED AUXILIARY BISHOP DIES SUDDENLY 911111i1=112211111MIIIIIIIIIL
"AND
HEARD A VOICE FROM HEAVEN SAY TO ME: WRITE, BLESSED ARE THE DEAD WHO DIE IN THE LORD. FROM HENCEFORTH NOW, SAITH THE SPIRIT, THAT THEY MAY REST FROM THEIR LABOURS; FOR THEIR WORKS FOLLOW I
THEM."-Apocalypse 14:13. With the reception of the news of the sudden death of His Lordship, the Most Reverend John Joseph Rafferty, Titular Bishop of Phoran, Auxiliary to His Grace the Archbishop, the Archdiocese of Perth lost not only a good Bishop but a friend to all the clergy and laity. His Lordship was due to
return to
Perth after six
months holiday in his native Ireland. He had returned to his home after a visit to some friends when he collapsed and died on Saturday, January 6.
Early Illness His Lordship had suffered from heart trouble, which was made evident soon after his consecration as a Bishop in 1955. From this he made a remarkable recovery and carried out the many strenuous tasks in pontifical ceremonies and diocesan visitation which were his lot as Auxiliary Bishop to His Grace.
Many Tasks The late Bishop Rafferty was born in Killaloe, County Clare, on August 20, 1912. He was educated at St. Flannan's College and studied for the priesthood at St. Kieran's College, Kilkenny. Ordained in 1936, the late Auxiliary Bishop came +0 the Archdiocese of Perth in the same year. He was appointed to the staff of Sc. Mary's Cathedral where three years later, he was made secretary to His Grace the Archbishop, which appointment was terminated in 1947. After a year's leave in Ireland the late Bishop returned and was made Administrator of St. Mary's Cathedral. In 1949 he was apointed Chancellor of the Archdiocese and Dean of St.
Mary's Cathedral. Other tasks which the late. Bishop Rafferty performed were, diocesan director of the Pontifical Mission Aid, 11939-451 diocesan consultor, Synodal examiner, member of the Diocesan Tribunal and master of ceremonies at the Cathedral.

The editorial of that week acclaimed the' Bishop -elect as a priest "of a quiet, unassuming disposition, the Bishop-elect has proved a most capable administrator in a succession of offices, which, lacking in external display, have nonetheless called for qualities of application, dedication and sheer hard work. That he has accomplished so much and has yet retained so great an esteem among the Catholic body, both clerical and lay, is testimony enough to gifts of affability, tact and charity."
Among messages of condolence received by His Grace the Archbishop were telegrams or letters from His Holiness Pope John XXIII, His Excellency, the Most Rev. Maximilian De Furstenberg, Apostolic Delegate to Australia, New Zealand and Oceania, His Eminence Norman Thomas

Co-Consecrators At Requiem
Joyful News The announcement that the then Administrator, Monsignor J. Rafferty, was to be consecrated Auxiliary Bishop to His Grace the Archbishop was made in "The Record" of July 14, 1955 and was hailed as a most popular appointment.
The two co-consecrating prelates, Bishop Gummer and Bishop Goody will again be present, the Bishop of Geraldton to be the celebrant of the Requiem Mass and the Bishop of Banbury to preach the panegyric for their late brother Bishop.

Symbolism Was In Coat Of Arms
The consecration of the Bishop was performed by the then Apostolic Delegate to Australia, New Zealand and Oceania, the Most Ref. R. Carboni on October 26, 1955. Co-consecrators with Archbishop Carboni were the Most Reverend A. Gummer, Bishop of Geraldton and the Most Reverend L Goody, Bishop of Bunbury who had been Bishop Rafferty's predecessor as Auxiliary Bishop. Throughout his time as Auxiliary Bishop, the late Bishop Rafferty lived up to the comments expressed by all, prior to his consecration. His patience and kind-heartedness and priestly character were a byword amongst the clergy, both young and old. His many friends amongst the laity will remember him for his unselfish interest in their welfare.

panel symbolised the country and State of the late Bishop's adoption with a gold kangaroo paw upon a green field. Above the shield were the usual symbols of the episcopal office, thy, mitre, cross and crozier. I' The motto chosen by the late Dr. Rafferty "We fly to Thy Patronage" was derived from the oldest Marian prayer known to the Church. The coat of arms was designed for the late Auxiliary Bishop by a Sister of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart in this State.
