Praise Of Pope For Franciscans His Holiness Pope John has praised the progress of the Conventual Franciscans. He said in an audience granted to members attending the Order's general chapter that the Order has

shown "clear signs of new development, especially in the past 40 years." Leaders of the Order were received after having elected Father Basil Heiser, O.F.M. Cony., of Terre Haute, U.S., as their new SuperiorGeneral. Pope John, who is a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, spoke of his many contacts with the Friars Minor Conventual in the course of his priestly career. These, he said, ranged "from the banks of the Bosphorus to that greater centre of the apostolate which is the basilica of St. Anthony of Padua," The Pope said that in all these contacts he sensed "the presence of the Lord, the presence of His grace and the presence of the spirit of St. Francis."

Prioress and community at morning tea. A brief entertainment was given by the girls of orchestral and choral items, and a complimentary, original resume of the jubilarian's call to the religious life and her activities during it.

When Miss Pauline Rowe brought the youth concert on June 16 to a triumphant conclusion with Dohnany's pastiche, "Variations On A Nursery Theme" she won for herself the concerto section of the State finals of ABC competition. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Rowe of Langsford-st., Claremont, Pauline received her early musical training from the Sisters of St. Joseph, first at Merredin and later at New Norcia. At the age of seven she won a piano exhibition for sixth grade. In 1955 she obtained the A. Mus. A. degree. In 1958 she was awarded

the Kylie Club music prize for L. Mus. A. Pauline has had considerable success in W.A. Music Festivals. Last year she won the Open Piano Solo and together with her sister, the open Piano duet at the Perth Music Festival. In 1958 she graduated from Graylands Teachers' College. She is now studying under Mr. Edward Black.

She is survived by a brother in Ireland, and a sister, Mrs. Marshall, of Victoria Park. Her other sister, Sister Paul of the Little Sisters of the Poor, died at Randwick a few years ago.

In the early years of the century, when Sister Gerard entered, the Victoria Park convent had only recently been founded by Bishop Gibney, who had brought the pioneer Sisters from Derry. Sister Gerard had many racy anecdotes of the hardships endured so lightheartedly in those early days. A rugged personality, Sister Gerard, with the tang and flavour of originality! The little boys were her special friends, won by the kind heart which expressed itself in a rich Kerry brogue, with her own special wheedling note, blossoming often into an infectious laugh. Listening to the nostalgic reminiscences of the "old boys"-not a few of them eminent citizens-who spoke at her golden jubilee cele-

brations, o n e glimpsed, though the softening mists of the years, the Victoria Park Convent School of those other days. Sister Gerard loomed large as the Sister to whom a boy took his troubles, who comforted him with kind words, and whose affectionate interest followed him through life. Something of the exuberance of youth lingered about her even in extreme old age; her eyes were young, and her kindly, wrinkled face was virile. Sensing her goodness and deep faith, one felt that life had been kind to Sister Gerard; that she had indeed tasted in this world the "hundred -fold," promised to those who forsake all to follow Christ. May her soul rest in peace!
