The Executive Council on May 17 approved the appointment of the V. Rev. John Rolland Boylen, S.J., to the Senate of the University of Western Australia.

The doctorate of philosophy was completed by Father Boylen in 1930. In 1934 he was at Louvain University, Belgium, where he obtained his licentiate of Sacred Theology.

Death has taken yet another highly esteemed member of the community of the Sisters of Mercy at St. Brigid's, West Perth, in the person of Sr. M. Catherine Smyth, who died on May 8 at St. John of God Hospital, Subiaco, after a prolonged illness.

Requiem Mass for the repose of her soul was celebrated at St. Brigid's Church on May 10. His Lordship Bishop Rafferty presided. Right Rev. Monsignor E. Sullivan was the celebrant of the Mass, with Rev. D. Brunetti as Deacon and Rev. F. Dillon as' Subdeacon.

Debut Before Archbishop At Ball Twenty-two debutantes were presented to His Grace the Archbishop on Tues-

day night. The occasion was the annual Catholic Ball organised by the Y.C.W.

Girls' Movement. The Embassy Ballroom was tastefully decorated for the occasion, a feature being baskets of flowers profusely placed among the 600 people attending. As each of the debutantes was presented to His Grace by Miss Margaret Collopy, President of the Y.C.W. Girls, they curtsied before him and kissed his ring. After the presentation the debs and their partners performed the Pride of Erin dance before the audience of guests. Those who made their debut were: Misses Kathleen Eley, Diane Clarke, Veronica Dryden, Maria McGuire, Lynette, Duffy, Gay Pooley, Mary

Hallett, Franceine Jeffery, Margaret Jackson, Lynnore Nowotny, Ann Lynch, Maria Parlongo, Anne McDonald, Patricia Horner, Yvonne Scapin, Eileen Shanahan, Margaret Tracey, Wendy Buckenara, Carole Ochiltree, Margaret Dyson, Mary King and Sandra McKimmie. The official party included His Grace the Archbishop, Reverends E. McKenn,a and P. Quinn. As His Grace entered, the orchestra played Faith of Our Fathers and Miss Marie Adams, Vice-President of the Girls' Section of the Y.C.W., welcomed His Grace and everybody present. Miss Adams thanked His Grace for coming and also for his continued interest in support of the movement. Rev. J. P. O'Brien, chaplain to the Y.C.W., then presented Miss M. Collopy (Pres.), Miss M. Adams (Vice-Pres.) and Miss P. Watson (Sec.) to His Grace. A return Debutante Dance will be held at the Y.A.L. Ballroom, Irwin -street, Perth, on Saturday night, May 28. This dance will be held in conjunction with the regular Saturday night dance, and the proceeds of this night will aid the Miss Olympia Contest.

Reds Remove Leader After Riots Berlin,-The local secretary of the Communist party in Poland's "model" industrial city of Nowa Huta was removed from his post following clashes between police and Catholic demonstrators, it was reported here. The demonstrations took place April 27 and 28 in t the attempted removal of a cross marking the site earmarked for Nowa Huta's first church. Nowa Huta, site of the Lenin steelworks, the largest in Poland, was built near Cracow a decade ago has mire than 100,' 000 inhabitants. No provision
