when I bid you a hearty welcome to this Western gateway of the Commonwealth of Australia. Particularly do I extend to you this evening a most cordial welcome on behalf of the

Hierarchy,

Clergy,

Reli-

gious and laity of this Pro-

vince of Western Austraha, Representing as you do the Holy See, you are the distinguished link between the Cradle of Christianity and these Southern islands where the Church is still very young. Your Excellency will experience in this new field of diplomatic service a devoted loyalty on the part of the people to their religious principles; a devoted and unswerving loyalty, with all that the noble word "loyalty" connotes, to him, under whom they are privileged to serve as their common Father in God, Pope John XXIII, now gloriously reigning. In renewing through Your Excellency, as we are privileged to do on an auspicious occasion such as this, our cordial sentiments of affection, loyalty, admiration and devotion to him who bears the Triple Crown and wears the Fisherman's Ring, at the same time we express the sincere wish and utter the fervent prayer that he will be granted length of days, and grace and strength to rule and guide the flock of which he is the Chief Shepherd; to continue to be a beacon in the lighthouse of the Church, ever flooding the Christian world with the clear warm rays of

Divine Truth. Your Excellency will find the Church in Australia vigorous and enthusiasticpulsating with the vigour and enthusiasm

of youth. Only a little over a century old short indeed by European standards she is building solidly on the firm foundations laid by the pioneers who were drawn from various European nationalities. Flourishing ecclesiastical seminaries and novitiates,

sun.

Your Excellency, with all the warmth and sincerity that words can convey, we tender you a most dutiful and cordial welcome. And in welcoming you, we pray earnestly that Almighty God may bless and prosper your

Apostolic administration; that your years amongst us as a member of the Vatican's ancient and dignified diplomatic service may be years of fruitfulness, and tranquil enjoyment of the genial climatic influences of this sunny land the Southern land of the Holy

Ghost. His Excellency in reply to the welcome of His Grace said that he wished to thank His Grace for the very kind reception and welcome that had been afforded him, at the airport, at his home and here in the Cathedral. His Excellepcy mentioned some questions asked by journalists at the airport of the Holy Father's interest in this country. His reply was that the Holy Father was extremely interested and felt a great affection for

Australia. His duty in this country would be to continue the wonderful unity between His Holiness, the Vicar of Christ, and the individual Bishops who each in his

diocese

represents the supreme authority of the Church. In recalling His Grace's words of "flourishing condition of the Church in Australia, of the wonderful loyalty of the people and the clergy." His Excellency said that this was very

manifest not only here in Australia, as he had heard from reports, but what he had actually seen in Japan. In that country he had

Sister M. Sebast fan's Obsequies Death came with startling suddenness to Sister M. of St. Sebastian Tiggeman, on Friday afternoon,

April 29.

Sister was born at Hilton, South Australia, on December 15, 1878, of German Irish parents. She received her education from the Dominican Sisters there. The deceased entered the Congregation of the Good

Shepherd in 1912 and was professed at the Provincial

Monastery, Abbotsford, Victoria, in 1914. In 1916, Sister M. Sebastian was sent to the Good Shepherd Convent

at Leederville where her entire religious life has since been spent.

For several past years Sister has been in indifferent health and though rendered inactive she was never absent from daily Mass and Holy Communion or from th'e exercises of

community life. Sister received the last rites of the Church at the hospital. Her priestly nephew, Rev. Dr. Tiggeman, secretary to the Archbishop of Adelaide, Most Rev. Dr. Beovich, D.D., arrived by plane on Sunday night and celebrated the Solemn Requiem Mass in the Convent chapel at 9.30 on Monday morning. The Auxiliary -Bishop of Perth, Most Rev. J. Rafferty, D.D., presided and over 50 priests were present, the chanting of the Solemn Requiem Mass being rendered by their choir. Rev. Fr. Dermot, O.D.C., and Rev. Fr. Cunningham were deacon and sub -deacon.

To Sister's many relatives and friends in South Ausand Victoria, Rev. Mother Prioress and the Sisters of the community at

met many Australian missionary priests and religious. This was evidence, he said, of the vigour of the Church in Australia when the sons and daughters of Australia could take the Faith to other lands. His Excellency hoped that his stay here would be a long one, and that in that time, while remaining an obedient and loyal servant of the Holy See, to enlarge and fortify the natural bond between this land and our common Father in Christ, Pope John XXIII.

BISHOP

Low Mass was then celeby His Lordship

brated Bishop

Gurnmer, Revs. P. Quinn and W. Foley acting as chaplains to the Bishop. Assistants to His Excellency were Rt. Rev. Monsignori C. Cunningham, V.G., Diocese of Bunbury and E. Kennedy, V.G., Archdiocese of Perth. The servers of the Mass were students of St. Charles'

Seminary and the choir under the baton of the Rev. P. McCudden sang motets throughout.

RAFFERTY CONFERS

CONFIRMATION

IN

PRISON

Confidence in God's goodness and particularly in the power of God's grace with which. by our own goodwill and whole -headed co-oneration, veritable miracles could be achieved, was urged upon prisoners at Fremantle Prison who were recently confirmed there by the Most Rev. J. J. Rafferty, Auxiliary Bishop. Candidates who received the Sacrament were all recent converts to the Faith. They had been instructed and baptised by the Oblate Fathers, who are chaplains to the prisoners. Mass was first celebrated by the Rev. J. Coakley, O.M.I., in the presence of the Bishop. The prison choir sang several motets very effectively and also rendered the "Veni Creator" prior to the Confirmation. Assisted by the V, Rev. J. Sullivan, O.M.I.. and Father Coakley, His Lordship then administered the Sacrament. Each candidate had an individual sponsor-a fellow -prisoner of his own choice. After the ceremony, Bishop Rafferty congratulated the men and explained the significance of the Sacrament. After speaking of the meaning and importance of the special graces received through the Sacrament, His Lordship said it was necessary to have confidence in God's grace. ' Without it they could do nothing. With it, and given their own goodwill and whole -hearted cooperation, veritable miracles could be achieved. Bishop Rafferty thanked the Oblate Fathers for their ministrations at the prison and for having arranged that morning's ceremony. He also thanked and congratulated organist and choir which, he said, showed careful and pains-

taking preparation. Later His Lordship mixed freely with the men, chatting with them individually and in groups. As a token of their appreciation for his visit, the men presented His Lordship with a bouquet of fresh flowers from the prison gardens.
