Bishop Says We Must All Be Cardinal Has Dual About Our Father's Business Task In Formosa At the close of the Christian Social Week at St. Thomas More's University College last Sunday night, His Lordship Bishop Rafferty stressed the obligation of all to take part in the lay apostolate. He emphasised the need of personal sanctification in the life of the lay apostle and pointed out that greater effectiveness results from membership in the es-

tablished organisations. During the evening Mr Les Brennan spoke on the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Miss V. Ryan on the Legion of Mary and Mr. W. Armstrong on the Young Christian Workers' Movement. Rev. J. O'Brien gave a short account of the Catholic Social Apostolate, which was

responsible for the Social Week and recent Cana Conferences. He went on to describe briefly the other organisations of the Lay Apostolate in the Archdiocese. After hearing these talks "The second point I think Dr. Rafferty thanked the that would have emerged organisers of the Weak and would be that to do anythe staff of St. Thomas thing effective in regard to More College. of us personally, an effort to sanctify ourselves and to

more deeply Christianise ourselves in our thinking and in acting. "It is an old adage that we cannot give what we have not got, you cannot sanctify anybody unless you first try to sanctify yourself, you cannot Christianise any environment until you Christianise your own life first. "Thirdly, perhaps, t h e point that would emerge is that to do something very effective in that way means organisation, that individual effort of that kind does not count a great deal.

"First of all, there is an obligation upon each one of us as baptised Catholics, as members of the Mystical Body of Christ, to be about our Father's business. That is something that up to latter times we have not always been conscious of, we have been inclined, I'm afraid, to think: 'I am not my brother's keeper.' What he does, what he says, how he acts is his own business. If he doesn't go to Mass on Sunday, if he doesn't go to the Sacraments, well, after all he has a parish priest and he has a curate to chase him, but I think you may, during this week, have come to believe that the salvation of souls is not entirely the business of the priest or of the religious or of those who have been especially trained in that field. "We are all members of the same family, the family of Christ. We are all brothers and sisters in that family and as Catholics we are expected to take the same interest in our next in the door neighbour, pagan in Airica, in the people living under the influences of Communism in China, as we would in our own brother or sister in our own family. If our own brother starts to give up going to Mass on Sundays, we try to do something about it; his soul, we realise, is in danger and we are interested because he is our brother. "The salvation of souls is the business of every one of us.

have noticed that if you try to start a fire with one piece of stick, it very soon goes out. If you pull a stick out of a fire that is already burning, it soon goes out. If you gather all the sticks that are burning together you soon have a brilliantly burning and effective fire. So it is with apostolic action, gather together people who have the same ideas and the same ideals, group them together, train them, form them, and there you have a most effective will

the old and the venerated ones like the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Legion of Mary and the YCW and so on, you have some new ones that have grown up in later years such as the Nurses groups, Doctors groups, the Dentists groups, so on, they are all doing magnificent work. They are all suffering from the same disease, lack of membership. They could be so much more effective with greater membership. So there they are for you, you probably learned a great deal about them tonight. I know that I learned more than I knew before about the St. Vincent de Paul, the Legion of Mary and the YCW from those magnificent talks that 'we listened to. Perhaps you will find an interest in some of our lay apostolate organisations the field is a wide one, the work is there to be done and the more workers that

enter into the harvest the greater the yield will be. "While thanking all those associated with the organisation and the conducting of this Christian Social Week, I thank you my good people for corning and being so patient as to listen at least to the final speaker."

So I hope and pray that this Week, this Christian Social Week, will have given you clear ideas on the lay apostolate and I pray particularly that amongst you there may be some who will find your way into various lay apostolate organisations that we have. You can see that it is a fairly broad and extensive list, covering most aspects of life. You have

agency.

The named

Cardinal, recently Apostolic Adminis-

trator of Formosa's Taipei archdiocese, is stopping there on his way to his post. In recent years he has been living with the Divine Word Fathers at Teihny, 111. Excluding Missions, Eastern Church, 158,268 Train As Priests Vatican City,- The Sacred Congregation of Seminaries and Universities has disclosed that 1957 there were 1,456 seminaries with 158,268 students under its jurisdiction.

Unifying the missionary effort and developing higher education are the two main tasks he will face in his new post in Formosa, His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Tien, S.V.D., said while in Rome.

The statistics were contained in the congregation's report carried in the newly issued "Activities of the Holy See in 1959." In its previous statistical report, issued in 1957 with figures for the end of 1955, the congregation listed 990 seminaries with 140,500 students. Europe in 1957 had 905 seminaries, including 243 major seminaries, 558 minor seminaries and 104 pre seminaries. Total enrolment was 101,353. In North and South America there were 521 seminaries, including 144 major ones, 206 minor seminaries and 101 preseminaries. Total enrolment was 55,330. The Philippine Islands counted seven major seminaries, 18 minor ones and four preseminaries, with a total enrolment of 2,117. The breakdown of the world total of students shows that there were 26,046 students studying theology; 22,626 in philosophy; 94,971 in prephilosophy and 14,607 in preseminary studies. In 1957, a total of 6.159 priests were ordained throughout the world; the breakdown of figures showed 3,958 ordained in Europe, 2,080 in America and 93 in the Philippines. These figures do not include statistics for territories under the jurisdiction of the Sacred Congregations for the Propagation of the Faith and for the Oriental Church, nor do they include figures from nations under communist domination.

At that time, while the Cardinal was in Hong Kong recovering from a heart ailment the Chinese communists overran his See. He atternped to return, but was prevented from doing so by the Red regime. When he arrives in Formosa in the' first week of March, Cardinal Tien will begin a new phase of his ecclesiastical career. One of his first tasks will be to call a meeting of the four apostolic prefects there to decide upon future details of the newly reorganised Catholic Fu Jen University. Beyond that says Cardinal Tien "there are two main tasks to perform which also constitute in part the motive for my assignment to Taipei: to unify the missionary effort on Formosa which involves many religious societies and many nationalities and to promote higher education. The Cardinal explained that there are four high schools and the nucleus of a university on Formosa now. He hopes to add more high schools and see the university through its full development.

principle, because they are militant atheists; in fact, because they are now engaged in an all-out effort to sever all ties with Rome and create a schismatic national church. Under these circumstances no improvement of relations is possible, he said. Asked if any arrangement such as that worked out in Poland might be employed in China, he said there is no comparison between the conditions in Poland and China. In Poland Catholics are a majority and, relatively speaking, are well organised. In China, Catholics are a minority and, even at its best, the Chuch's organisation there was always hampered by great distances and other factors. How does the Church's future look on Formosa? The Cardinal said that in 10 years. the Catholic population has grown from 12,000 to 200.000 and it will grow still more. Catholic population now constitutes two per cent of the 10 million population. There are now between four and five hundred priests to serve Firing Hopes Asked to indicate the sig- them.
