Pope John Issues New Encyclical His Holiness Pope John XXIII has issued an encyclical letter calling on the world's Catholics to pray the Rosary during October.
Letter On The
Rosary They should pray, the Pope said, for five special intentions:
* * *
'
Guidance of the Pope. Success of missionaries and the apostolate.
Peace and concord among nations. Success of the Rome diocesan synod. Success of the forthcoming ecumenical council.
The 1,400 -word encyclical, dated September 26, will be known as "Grata Recordatio" (Grateful Memory) from its opening words. In it the Pope hailed the Rosary as a "mystical crown in which the prayers 'Our Father,' Hail Mary' and 'Glory be to the Father' are intertwined with meditation on the greatest mysteries of the Faith." Pope John's encyclical is the third he has issued since his election to the papacy nearly a year ago. It is his first on the Rosary and his shortest. The Pope's first encyclical was "Ar Petri Cathedram" (Near the Chair of Peter), a 12,000 -word document issued in June appealing to separated Christians to re -unite with the Catholic Church. In August he released "Sacerdotii Nostri Primordia" (From the Beginning of Our Priesthood) on the role of the priest and the virtues he needs. The 9,000 -word encyclical was issued to commemorate the centenary of the death of St. John Vianney, the Cure d'Ars. "Grata Recordatio" is the first encyclical on the Rosary since Pius XII wrote "Ingruentium Malorum" (The Assault of Evils) in 1951. Earlier encyclicals on the Rosary include Pius XI's "Ingravescentibus Malis" (Increasingly Grave Evils) in 1937 and ten by Leo XIII between 1883 and 1898. The opening words of Pope John's new encyclical refer to the period when he was a boy and heard Leo XIII's letters on the Rosary. He said: "This sweet memory of Our young years has never left Us with the passing of time, nor has it weakened." He stated that he has often urged the faithful to pray, privately and publicly, during the first year of his pontificate and that now he intends "to do so with a still stronger and We should say, more stirring exhor-
tation." Recalling Pius XII's death and his own election last October, Pope John singled out a prayer in the Litany of the Saints and asked Catholics to "raise to God the same prayer-`That you would preserve our Apostolic Prelate and all the orders of the Church in holy religiefa, we beseech you to hear us.' " Secondly the Pontiff urged the faithful to pray for missionaries. Noting that on October 11 he will take part in a World Mission Sunday observance in St. Peter's basilica in the morning and visit the North American College in the afternoon, he called for recitation of the Rosary for the success of the missions "both in distant lands not yet evangelised and in immense industrial cities." The longest section of the encyclical was devoted to world peace. The Pope urged Catholics to pray the Rosary in October so that world leaders will understand today's problems and "attentively assess the serious duty of the present hour." "We therefore pray the Lord that they may endeavour to know thoroughly the causes that give rise to differences and that they may overcome them with good will and that they may above all assess the sad tally of ruin and harm wrought by armed conflicts-from which the Lord preserve us-and not place any trust in them. "We pray that they may adapt civil and social legislation to the real needs of men, not forgetting eternal laws, and that they may always bear in mind the heavenly destiny of every single soul, created by God to achieve it and enjoy it one day." The Pope also noted that there are philosophies and practical attitudes which are "absolutely irreconcilable with Christian Faith," and stressed that he would remain firm in opposing them.

The Pope then called for recitation of the Rosary for the "fruitful and salutory" outcome of the Rome diocesan synod and the forthcoming ecumenical council, "those intentions so dear to Our heart." He said he is asking Catholics to pray for the council so that it will result in the "vigorous reflowering of all Christian virtue, which We expect of it," and that it may "serve as an invitation and incentive even for those, Our brothers and sons, who are separated from this Apostolic See." The encyclical closed with the apostolic blessing for all who respond to the Pope's appeal.

Regalia Of Societies And Banners Will Make Procession Colourful In addition to being an annual diocesan function, the Eucharistic procession which will be held at Aquinas College on Sunday, Oct. 25, is the annual rally for members of the Holy Name Society. Branches of the Holy Name Society have been circularised and already some country units have notified their intention of participating. Parishioners of several inner country parishes have also chartered buses to bring them to join in this tribute to Christ the King. Laymen from Manning and Applecross parishes will act as marshals for the procession, which will assemble this year at 2.45 p.m. A striking feature of the procession will be the number of Catholic organisations participating in regalia and ,1111111.1111
under distinctive banners. Among these will be: Boys and girls from the various schools, with their teachers. New Australians in national costume. Children of Mary in blue and white regalia. Catholic Boy Scouts in uniform. Members of the several Third Orders. Y.C.W. and N.C.G.M. flag -bearers in. their capacity as column leaders. The preacher this year will be the Rev. Fr. O'Sullivan, 0.P., from the Dominican Priory at North Doubleview.

SPECIAL
PRAYER TO BLESS PRESS When His Grace the Archbishop last week blessed our new printing press he used the special blessing formula from the Roman Ritual. As this prayer is rarely if ever heard by lay Catholics, we reprint a translation below:
0 Lord God, sole fount of knowledge Who so condescends to light up the imagination of men that they are able to invent new crafts for the printing of the written word, bless, we beseech You, this machine, so that by the publishing of books for our benefit we may with Your aid teach nothing but the knowledge of You which truly leads to life. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen. Two pets at Castledare
