The stimulating and didactive power inherent in the liturgy is, in fact, not being used. In recent years a considerable number of priests and laity have come to realise these facts; their reaction to the situation is what is called the "liturgical movement" a concerted effort to cause the liturgy to be used according to its inherent nature as a communal celebration. The ideal is that every public Mass should be celebrated with active participation of the laity, according to the principle expressed by St. Pius X in '1903, and repeatedly urged by succeeding Popes, especially by the present Holy Father. In practice this means that the people should join in those parts of the Mass which properly belong to them, and that a Lector should translate for them those parts of the Mass which are important but which are variable, and
