The practice of prayer and penance is a universal command gravely obliging all Christians. The only public and official requirements of the Church by Canon Law for the fulfilment of this obligation are the precepts of attendance at Mass on days of obligation and the observance of Fast -days. Both are serious obligations. It must be admitted, however, that comparatively few Catholics in Australia keep the fast according to the quasi -mathematical rules which have been fairly widespread for some time, following the interpretation of St. Alphonsus. In the history of the Church the Fasts have varied considerably in duration and severity according to different eras and localities. The Canon Law, however, is deliberately very imprecise on the matter of
