PONTIFICAL HIGH MASS. The Mass celebrated on Sunday morning was the Pontifical Mass of Our Lady, Help of Christians. Cardinal Gilroy presided and the celebrant wPs Archbishop Mannix. Cardinal Spellman preached the following sermon:

HIGH PRIEST PLEASING UNTO GOD. It is my happy privilege to he the bearer of greetings and good wishes from the clergy and peaple of New York, to the Archbishop, clergy and people of Me. bourne. These felicitations collie warmed wi.h the warmth of a heart -deep friendship and spiritual kinship interwoven by the twin bonds of our Catholic Faitn and our common patron, the great and gentle St. Patrick, Apostle of Ireland, Evangelist of the World. And I am filled with joy, admiration and affection, as contemplating the cradle days of this Church of Australia, behold the glorious pre. seat, heritage of those hundred years, and all the years since Christianity was first brought to this beauteous, beloved land blessed by the Southern Cross. One hundred years ago Melbourne, then Port Philip, was but an outlying parish of Sydney, with its twenty-five hundred Catholic souls served by a solitary .priest. By the grace of God, these figures have been multiplied a thousandfold, and the mo.lern City of Melbourne stands in the stead of Port Philip-a city which, because of wise planning and good building, to -day
